Arrested
(Riley's POV)
"Please? Come on mom, I'm nineteen, can't you just kick me out for it or something?"
"That would be better for you than me just taking away your technology?" Mom chuckles. "Here, five minutes." I get handed my phone, and then rush into my bedroom, shutting the door.
I open a text from Ashton, and widen my eyes. Oh god, oh god. I didn't even think about this, I should've told him what happened. I'm just scared he's going to think I'm terrible and dump me.
I dial Luke's phone number (the only number I'll know by heart in my lifetime), and wait as I get more irritated with the constant beeps. Oh come on, Luke. Please answer.
"Hi." I hear.
"Hi!" I say, a bit too eager. "Um, so- how are you?"
"Ashton sent you the picture, didn't he." Luke asks, flatly. He sounds miserable.
"Um." I look at my lap. "Yeah."
"I'm fine, Riley. Everything's-"
"No, Luke, I've been an awful girlfriend." I shake my head, "I haven't actually been with Cole all that much." I confess. Silence. "I uh, I lied so you wouldn't think I'm crazy."
"I already think you're crazy." He jokes. "Whatever you did is probably better than what I thought was happening."
"What did you think was happening?" I ask. "Oh. God. Did you think me and Cole were like.. Ew, no, no way, you only." I hear him chuckle a little bit and I smile. "Okay so.. I guess I should probably tell you what happened."
"Yea-"
"I got arrested." I say quickly.
"What?!" He yells, more out of shock than anger.
"I was arrested." I repeat, adding the shame to my voice. "Please don't break up with me."
"Like hell I'd break up with you, what did you do?" He laughs. I'm so happy he's taking the humor approach to this. Everyone else is constantly yelling at me and lecturing me.
"Well um, it was the night I got home, I was all sad because I wouldn't see you for a while, and long distance is really, really, difficult. So, well, I kind of made my way into a bar."
"Don't you have to be twenty one for that in America?" He chuckles.
"Yep, yeah, I do." I nod. "Then I got like, hella drunk-"
"I didn't know you knew how to get drunk." Luke says jokingly.
"Me either." I laugh. "So anyways, when I left the bar, I remember- very vaguely, I was hit on and then kicked the guy in the balls, and then because I was drunk and crazy went running away from him, even though he confessed to deserving it, and then I stopped at a brick wall, and because I'm going to spray paint my dresser a galaxy theme, I had spray paint in my bag, and, well, you know."
"Oh. My. God." Luke laughs. "I just wish I could've been there. What did you write on the wall?"
"I don't remember, probably a bunch of scribbles." I laugh. "Then in the middle of the night, my mom had to come get me out, and since then I've only had my phone when she thinks I deserve it, but since my withdrawal makes me all sassy that's rarely. That's why I haven't been texting you back, and I told you Cole was around just so you wouldn't think I'm insane. I'm sorry Luke, I really am, I didn't know or even think about what it would do to you."
"It's- It's okay, honestly. I'm just glad you actually still like me."
"No I don't like you." I say. "I loovve yoou." He laughs.
"Are you allowed visitors?"
"I'm pretty sure, yes." I smile, biting my lip.
"Okay, how's in like, four days?"
"Perfect." I smile.
Michael's POV
"I know Ashton, but last time Luke was like this he almost quit the band. Without Luke we don't really have a band." I say.
"I know that. What scares me though is what if they break up in like, two years? I mean, isn't it a little unhealthy for his one source for happiness to be Riley? I just don't want him to, you know,"
"Do something drastic." Calum nods.
"Good news everybody!" Luke yells, walking in. "Riley got arrested!"
We just stare at him. "And.. That's a good thing?" Ashton laughs.
"Yes! She hasn't had her phone because her mum took it away, she only said she was with Cole so I wouldn't think she's insane." He smiles. "I'm seeing her in four days."
"Luke, um, what if this.. Happens again?" Ashton asks.
"I don't think Riley's planning on getting arrested again." He laughs.
"But what if something else happens?" I ask. "What if you end up like this again?"
Luke sighs. "Guys, everything's oka-"
"But this is life, Luke." Calum interrupts. "In a few weeks everything might not be okay.What then?"
He frowns, "What are you suggesting?"
"That you see a therapist." Ashton says. Luke raises his eyebrows.
"I don't need to see a therapist."
"A lot of people do it, Calum and I have." I say. "It doesn't make you crazy mate, all it means is you need help managing your depression, which is completely understandable. Not everyone is expecting you to be perfect-"
"Besides the fans." He murmurs.
"Bull shit." Calum snaps. "Those fans have been so nice to us, they cried when Michael said he has mental issues, they started so many hashtags to make sure we're all okay, don't drag them into this."
"I'm sorry." Luke mumbles, putting his head down. "I didn't mean,"
"Okay, back on topic," Ashton says. "We don't think that little breakdown was entirely Riley related."
"What?"
"We think there's something else that happened and Riley triggered it." Calum says slowly. "That's why we want you to see a therapist. Just to help you figure out what happened."
"Fine, I'll see a therapist." Luke shakes his head, "But we're not telling anyone about it."
"Deal." Ashton smiles. "You're okay now, though?"
"Yeah." Luke nods. "I'm okay."
