For Your Eyes Only

Chapter 8

Annie’s POV
I woke up slowly, lifting my head from my arms resting on the side of the hospital bed.
“Hey, kiddo,” said a weak voice. I glanced up to see Auntie placing her hand on my head. She looked tired, dark circles were evident under her blue eyes.
“Auntie, how do you feel?” I asked quietly.
“Ok, I guess. I spoke to Dr. Lang… She said she told you the news.”
“I don’t believe her. You’ll walk again. I know you will.” I refused to acknowledge the alternative.
“Well, right now we need to decide what to do with you. I’m not letting you run the shop alone… for obvious reasons,” she giggled slightly. She was right; I’d screw everything up. “Have you made any friends that you can stay with? What about your co-workers?”
“Oh, no!” I exclaimed. Work! I whipped out my cell phone to see I had three missed calls from my boss. I dialed him back, explaining the situation to my aunt. “Hey, Dave, I’m so sorry! My aunt is in the hospital right now… I didn’t think to call… She’ll be fine. I know she will. She has to… Ok, bye.”
“Nice, he’s probably fuming.”
“No, he’s a very considerate human being.”
“So, where will you stay? What about the boy you went out with?”
“Auntie, he had to leave today. That’s where I was this morning. He, um, he’s a world famous singer... The boys you met? They’re One Direction,” I explained. Her face lit up with delight.
“Seriously? When did you figure it out?” she asked.
“The night I met him. I looked him up on twitter,” I replied.
“Call him! I’m sure he’d love for you to stay with him,” she laughed, winking. I widened my eyes, horrified, yet surprised that she would suggest that.
“Really? But he wouldn’t want me tagging along, and neither would the boys!”
“Call him, girlie. He’ll say yes,” she grinned.
“Well, I had told him I’d call him after I talked to you…”
“You called him before hand?”
“He was the only one I knew to call…”
“Get to it!” she exclaimed. I stood and exited the room, suddenly feeling hungry and realizing that it was already 1 P.M. and I hadn’t eaten a thing. After I talked to Niall, I’d get some food. I was surprised when he picked up on the first ring.
“Annie! How’s your aunt?” he asked. He sounded strange… almost like he’d been crying.
“Um, well…” I searched for the words, knowing my habit of hiding pain rather than speaking it. “The doctor says… she may never, eh, um… she might not walk… ever again,” I stuttered. He was quiet for a moment; all I heard was his steady breathing.
“Are you ok?” he asked, catching me off guard.
“M-me? No, it was Auntie-”
“No, are YOU ok?” he asked again. “Your aunt is an adult, Annie. And from what I’ve seen, I think she can handle it. You… you’re not as strong, to be honest. Who are you going to stay with?” Not as strong? No, he was right. I was losing it inside. I had nobody there to help me. I needed someone to be my foundation… and Auntie was right. I needed him.
“Auntie wants me to stay with you, but I know you’re busy and I-”
“Done. Get to the tube as fast as you can. I’ll have a man there to take you to me.”
“B-but Niall-”
“Please, Annie. Trust me.” Trust me.

Thank you! Sadly, some trolls killed my ratings for this story and my other one, Flat 51.

I'm trying to keep it current/ As a reader, I know how annoying it can be when updates are few and far between!
