For Your Eyes Only
Chapter 39
Annie’s POV
Two Months Later
I was so happy. I’d given myself to Niall completely, and now the relationship had shifted. We were no longer treading on thin ice, we were diving in for a swim. I didn’t feel embarrassed with Niall anymore, and I loved it. It was like… suddenly everything was real. The relationship, the love, the physicality. It had all become real now.
Tonight Niall and I were going out to a bar with the boys and their girls. Harry’d found himself a girl he’d met on a plane ride, and it turned out we were going to the same place. They’d been steady for about a month. He was so happy with Lola, and it made the rest of us happy too.
I yanked the tight dress down over my hips and scrunched up my face. I didn’t want to wear this! I looked like a slut! The dress was navy blue with a super high neckline and no sleeves, but it was super tight and came all the way to the top of my thighs. Danielle had insisted that this is what I should wear, for Niall, out tonight, but I doubted her. I didn’t have the confidence required for this kind of dress.
“Damn,” Niall muttered, leaning against the door frame. I already had my black strappy heels on, and my make-up done. I had been putting off the dress until the last minute, but apparently Ni loved it. “You look hot, babe,” he said. “I’ll have to keep an eye on you tonight.”
“Why, afraid I’ll run away?” I joked slyly. He pushed up and came behind me, sliding his hands down my hips and pulling me to him.
“No, because this,” he whispered with a squeeze of my bum, “is mine.”
The lads cheered as we entered the crowded bar, the last to arrive.
“What took you so long?” shouted Louis above the blaring music.
“Oh, you know, the usual,” I quipped with a wink. He busted out laughing, obviously already having a few drinks on him. I couldn’t do much drinking tonight, though. I smiled visibly, thinking again of the secret I had yet to reveal to Niall. I knew he’d push me to drink more, but I had to protect the little person I’d found out was growing inside of me.
We ordered a round, but I discreetly asked the bar tender to replace mine with water. She smiled after I gave her a brief explanation and nodded knowingly.
Through the night, I noticed that Niall didn’t push me to drink, nor did he drink much himself, which was strange. Normally he dove right into the alchohol, but tonight he barely drank half a glass. I couldn’t help but wonder what he had up his sleeve.
“Annie. Walk with me?” he asked, holding out his hand. I glanced around to our scattered group. Louis was smashed, dancing ridiculously with Danielle. Harry and Lola were nowhere to be seen, but it was obvious what they were up to, and Liam was chatting nicely with Cheryl, the pair seeming to have a great time.
“Yeah, sure,” I answered, taking his hand. We walked to a staircase in the back somewhere, where we emerged onto the roof of the building. It was a warm night, as we were in Southern Italy, so we had no need of jackets. We were alone up there, when suddenly the perimeter of the edge of the building lit up in tiny little Christmas lights, giving the roof a white-ish glow. I gasped and stepped back, right into Niall’s chest. “It’s beautiful, Ni,” I whispered. When he didn’t respond, I turned to see tears building in his eyes. I felt for his hands, but they were shaking. “N-Niall? Are you ok?”
“I-I have something to tell you,” he stuttered, his voice unsteady. What? No. He was breaking up with me. It was over. He didn’t want me anymore. How could this be? “Annie, from the moment I met you, my whole life changed. The sun got kicked out of the way and my world began to revolve around you and you alone, and since then you’ve become my heart.” Wait… What? “I wake up every day and I realize again and again how lucky I am and how I don’t deserve any of you, much less all of you. This morning was different, though. This morning I woke up and I realized, for the first time, that I want to spend forever with you. I want to wake up every morning for the rest of my life and see you sleeping next to me. I want our children to come running in and jump on the bed until we’re both awake and laughing. So please, Annie, I can do nothing but beg you.” He slowly reached into his jacket and pulled out a small black box, sinking down to one knee. “Please, please, please be mine for all eternity. Let me kiss you awake for forever and a day. Marry me, Annie. Please.” I froze. He loved me that much? I didn’t think before I answered. I didn’t have to, because my heart already knew the answer and had from the start.
“Yes, oh my gosh, Yes! Forever yes!” I gushed, throwing my arms around his neck as soon as he stood up. “I… love… you!” I cried between sloppy, tearful kisses. He laugh and suddenly picked me up, spinning me around. That’s when I heard the clapping start. I looked up as he put me down and saw the boys and their girls all standing around, laughing. The girls were wiping tears from their eyes as well. Oh! I had news too…
“Niall!” I exclaimed. He glanced at me, confused. “I’m freaking pregnant!” I shouted.
“WHAT?!” he cried, and I didn’t think he could have smiled any wider. “Are you serious?! Holy crap! Guys, I’m gonna be a daddy!”
It was truly the happiest day of my life. I could never have asked for a better man. I could never have asked for better friends. And even though I’d been through a lot, Niall duct taped my heart back together successfully, and he must have used Gorilla tape because it worked pretty dang well.
