Long Way Down

I lean against my hummer and stare at Sam's house in front of me.

I'm not ready to give her up, I don't want to be done with her.

Last night was too much, she said she didn't want to get hurt again and that's the last thing on my list to do to her.

I take a deep breath in a walk across the street to her house. When i knock on the door an older lady opens it and i stare confused.

"Hello sweetheart, can i help you?"

I clear my throat and try to look behind her without being too nosey in search for Sam,"Yes, is Sam home?"

"She is, come on in. I'm Mrs. Newman."

I smile and think about Mr. Newman, "Excuse me, are you Mr. Newman's wife? From the high school?"

"Indeed i am- Sam! I lovely boy is here for you."

We walk into the kitchen and Sam is over the stove stirring something in a large pot.

"Sam, can we talk?" As i speak i point to the living room behind me.

Sam turns and looks at the pot, "Yea i guess, come on." She hands off the spoon to Mrs. Newman and they switch roles as Sam guides me into the other room.

"Um, how are you?"

She laughs, "Harry. Really? Its been a day- barely that."

"Yea, i guess you're right." I nervously laugh and scratch my neck, "What i came here to say was i don't want you to be done with me Sam, i care for you, a lot. I'm sorry i was rushing things last night- i got carried away and i shouldn't have acted the way i did."

I look at Harry, amazed. I would have never thought he would come to apologize, and especially as quick as he did.

"Thank you Harry. But, im scared. You need to understand that. I've never had a proper relationship with pretty much anyone. Okay? I need you to look at where i'm coming from before you get mad."

Harry took a step closer to me, "Does this mean that you are gonna give us another shot?"

I looked at my feet and sighed, "No. Harry, i can't. I need to focus on work, i have bills to pay, and i have school work that god knows i'm behind on. Somethings are better off left alone. And our relationship might be something that is better off left alone. I hate to say this but i can't Harry."

Harry's eyes filled with tears, "Sam, i-i love you. Don't do this. Please."

I shake my head and grab his wrist. "Harry, you can't okay? You just can't. I'm sorry, but i have company over and i am being impeccably rude right now, can you just go?"

He shakes my hand away and i hear a faint 'goodbye' as he turns to go.

When the door shuts Mrs. Newman comes out of the kitchen. "Now, i know you did not just turn down that boy. You need someone that will love you and treat you right Sam. Why wont you let yourself be happy?"

I wipe the few stray tears off my face, "That's just it though, i am happy. With him and without him- without him i just don't have to deal with the drama."

We walk into the kitchen and sit at the table.

"Now Sam, with any relationship you are gonna have drama. Look, just think about it. Okay? I'm sure you will figure out what to do. I cant make your decisions for you, but i do think you just let something really good walk right out of your front door." She smiles," He says he loves you now, but who's to say he is gonna wait around for you to make your mind up?"

"Enough of this my dear, let's talk about what i came here for. Your father says he is sorry for your step mothers actions the last time we saw each other, but he would like to see you. This Saturday."
