Long Way Down

Today is the day I told my mom I would come up to see her. I have a flight at four p.m. and two tickets sitting on the dash board in front of me.

I’m sitting in Sam’s drive way at the moment, and last time I was hear I can ‘faintly’ remember her saying not to come back if I ever needed anything.

I’m not going to lie, I’m pretty desperate right now. I don’t know how my mom is going to react if Sammie isn’t with me.

I finally half ass do something to make her happy and what, all for nothing at this point.

I’ve been sitting here for almost an hour, I hope she comes home, I have don’t know anywhere else to look for her.

The lord must have read my mind because seconds later she pulls into the drive way beside my car. Taking a deep breath in, I open the door and walk over to her car.

Sam starts pulling groceries out of the back seat of her car, I stand and wait for her to say something.

Nothing.

I clear my throat, she looks up at me and then back down to continue pulling the bags out.

Is she giving me the silent treatment? What the hell.

I guess I’m just going to have to play this out the Mr. Nice guy way.

Stepping forward, I grab two handfuls of groceries. She acts if she didn’t notice me helping.

Stubborn. To be honest I did not come to give an apology, I came to get her and her shit and get on this damn plane.

She leaves me standing by her car with her groceries in my hands as she opens her front door and goes inside.

Sighing I quickly catch up with Sam trying to muster up the words to apologize.

Seeing her put things away without any emotion towards me or just in general hurts to be honest. I mean, it wouldn’t have hurt if she was happy to see me.

I clear my throat for the second time in less than five minutes, “Sam, look I am very sorry for what happened the other day. I-it wasn’t supposed to work out like that. I got carried away, and no one has ever really rejected me before, so I was upset. An-and, I never went over to Embers place, I was really kidding.”

Sam turns to face me, finally acknowledging me, she doesn’t say anything though. I’m going to take that like she is mentally telling me to keep going.

“Also, I shouldn’t have brought up the past, it was wrong of me, and I’m sorry. I don’t know what to do any more Sam. I think about you all the time. I’m constantly finding my-self wanting to be around you. I know I hurt you and no, I can’t take it back, and even I know it’s too late to start over, so can we just see where things take us as friends?”

Sammie blinks at me a few times and walks in my direction, wanting to feel her warmth, I step forward. Only to be shut down when she takes a step back and holds her hand up.

“Harry, I’m glad you understand the things you’ve done, and that we can’t start over. Although, I am willing to move forward. Slowly though. I cannot rush into something that I don’t even know I am stable enough to do. Okay?”

Nodding at Sam, I understand. “Alright, I can do that, I put my-self in this position and I’ve just got to get into a different one. Even if it takes a while.”

She smiles in my direction then goes back to putting things away.

“Oh! Sam! Will you be my girl-friend?” Sam jerks her head towards me, “Like fake again, my mom wants me and you to come up sometime and see her.”

She seems to be in thought about the situation, “Yea, I guess.”

I clap my hands together loudly, this is going better than I planned in my head originally.

“Well! Get packed then! We are boarding at four!”
