Chapter 22: The Concert

Jessa’s POV

I took a few steps back so I wasn’t in Vic’s way as he strummed the beginning chords to King For A Day. The crowd cheered and I smiled over at Hayley and Jack as they stood across the stage and looked at us. They both gave me encouraging smiles as the band rocked out and Vic started singing.

“~Dare me to jump off of this Jersey bridge?~”

“~I bet you never had a Friday night like this!~” I sang out into my microphone.

“~Keep it up, Keep it up, Let’s raise our hands-~” The song went on (I sang the Kellin Quinn parts and didn't screamo them, just snag them noramally).

When it came time for Hayley to sing and her band to preform, I stood on the edges with my dad. He was super happy and having an adrenaline rush.

“You did great sis!” He pulled me toward his sweat-drenched body.

“Thanks dad.” I hugged him back and then leaned away when someone touched my shoulder, I turned around to see Mike standing in front of me.

“You’re kicking ass!” He smiled and hugged my body.

“Thanks.” I laughed pulling away from him too. “You guys are super sweaty. It’s a good look on guys but not on girls.”

“Whatever.” My dad and Mike laughed.

I heard the band start playing Misery Business so I walked out next to Hayley. She smiled at me and started singing. Once it got to the chorus, I sang along with her. Then it came to my solo.

“~Second chances they don’t matter, people never change
Once a whore, you're nothing more, I’m sorry, that’ll never change
And about forgiveness we’re both supposed to have exchanged
I’m sorry honey but I passed it up, now look this way

Well there’s a million other girls who do it just like you
Looking as innocent as possible to get to who they want
And what they like, it’s easy if you do it right
Well I refuse, I refuse, I refuse!~” I did my solo perfectly and went on to sing the chorus with her as the crowd went wild.

Once it was ATL’s turn, Paramore stepped to the side and the guys went into the middle of the stage. I laughed as bras were thrown on stage before they even started to talk.

“Wow, we have a tough act to follow.” Alex was always nice to the other preformers. “But I think we can do this, what about you babe?” He asked looking over at me.

“We got this.” I smiled at him and got a wink in return.

“Lets do this!” He yelled as “Dear Maria” started to play.

I sang the chorus with Alex and watched as the band rocked out. We sang a few more songs and then it was time to end the show. All the bands came back on stage and met in the middle. I stood between Jack and Alex; they each had an arm around my waist.

“You’re a natural Jessa.” Jack mumbled into my ear.

I laughed and shook my head as my dad brought the mic up to his mouth but waited for the crowd to calm down a bit. He looked shaky and I couldn’t tell if it was nerves or adrenaline.

“So, how did she do today?” He asked as the crowd cheered and everyone on stage clapped for me. “I think so too.” He laughed and looked at me. “We have a surprise for you.”

“Oh no.” I breathed out as my stomach clenched.

“Actually, Alex has a surprise for you.” My dad pointed at Alex and my eyes shot up to his.

“Will you sing with me?” He asked from next to me.

“Sure ?” I answered into my microphone. “You do realize that I’ve been up here singing with you right?” The crowd laughed.

“Yes, but I want to sing a song that isn't mine with you smartass.” He laughed as everyone backed away a little bit besides my dad and Jack.

They grabbed acoustic guitars and sat on the boxes set up on the front edges of the stage. I looked up at Alex in confusion.

“What song?” I asked into his ear.

“Just Give Me A Reason by Pink.” He smiled. “I know it’s your favorite song, your dad told me, and I know you have the voice to sing it so I want to sing it with you.”

“Alright, lets do this.” I shrugged.

I sat down next to my dad while Alex sat next to Jack. They both started playing at the same time and I took a shaky breath.

“You can do this.” My dad said to me with a soft voice.

“~Right from the start you were the thief who stole my heart,
And I, your willing victim-~” We sang out the rest of the song and the crowd sang with us.

By the end of the song, Alex and I were standing. My dad and Jack handed the guitars off and jogged back to us. I hugged Jack first and then my dad.

“You did great.” He said as he kissed my forehead.

“Thanks daddy.” I mumbled through a smile as we let go. “This all worked out alright.”

“I knew it would.” He watched Alex drape his arm around my shoulders and face the crowd.

“I want to thank all of you for coming to support us today and everyday.” Alex said with a smile as everyone joined us on stage again. “And I want to thank all the workers and backstage people for helping us and setting this up for us.”

“I’m so happy to say that I performed with all of you. You guys set the bar high for musicians to come.” Hayley was so right about that. “And I want to specifically thank you, Jessa. I…we, owe you so much. You did a great job and I’m proud to say that I got to sing with you at your first concert.” I smiled at her and walked over to hug her. “I love you girl.”

“Love you too.” I mumbled into her ear.

“Yea, Jessa did a lot for us today. It seems like all she did was sing with us but she did so much more; she gave us a whole new way to look at music.” Rian said as he walked over to me and draped his arm around my shoulders. “You have to promise me something.”

“Okay?” I said into my microphone.

“I get backstage passes to all of your concerts?” He said with a smile.

“Of course but I doubt I’ll ever have concerts.” I laughed into the microphone and heard the crowd gasp.

“Do you think she should do concerts?” Rian asked looking into the crowd and they cheered louder than they’d cheered all day. “Even they think you should.” He laughed looking down at me.

“Okay, maybe.” I shrugged.

“Good! The whole time I’ve known you, your dream has been to do your own concerts and make your own music. Follow that dream no matter where it takes you.” He was such a sweet guy and gave great advise even when I wasn’t looking for any. “You have a great voice, a beautiful face and a unmistakable personality, you can make it anywhere.”

I blushed and buried my face in his chest as he laughed and hugged me tight. The whole group hugged each other and then waved as we all walked off stage.
