Something Good Can Work: Book Two - ON HOLD INDEFINITELY-

Yes, always.

Two months.
That is how long it’s been since we lost our friend. It hasn’t been easy, but each day brings a little more healing. For most of us. School just let out and I’m spending the entire summer at Gran’s. I am so excited, but it’s bittersweet. That means every day I will be reminded of what I lost. Niall.
It’s a sad scene, the dinner table which used to be so full—over flowing really. Now there is only Gran, grandpa, Harry, and me. Lou is out with his girlfriend, Alison. Plot twist, I know right. They started dating about a month ago and things have been tumultuous to say the least. Lucy and Liam are officially together though. I guess that’s good. Harry and I haven’t made anything official, we’re taking it slow.
“Pass the bread, please?” Harry asked as he gave me a cheeky grin, I obliged and finished off the few bites I had left. Gran had made me a special grilled chicken breast over a bed of lettuce. They were having something that I didn’t care to eat, too many mushrooms for my comfort. Harry had gobbled it up though, he was definitely not missing any meals now that I was home.
“Where do you keep all this?” I asked before scooting my plate away and leaning back in my chair some. “I burn it all off when I play football of course.” He said as if it were true, he rarely played. He just had a very high metabolism. “I’m so sure.” I said with a laugh.
“Why don’t we go for a walk; will that make you feel better?” He said teasingly.
“It is a lovely day out.” Gran said with a grin as she began clearing the table. I stood and helped her, grandpa was already headed off toward his office to do whatever it is that he does in there. He is a man of little words, but he is always there when he knows he needs to be.
“Okay, sounds good.” I agreed as I sat the dishes in the sink, gran took my hand in hers and looked at me like she was about to cry.
“What is it?” I asked, squeezing my hand in hers.
“Go on baby, I’ve got the dishes. I’m so happy you’re home.” She said before pulling me in for a tight embrace. I’m definitely from a family of huggers.

The day was nice, it was warm enough for me to wear shorts and sandals and the wind was blowing just enough to make it comfortable. Harry and I walked down the street, I couldn’t keep my eyes off of Niall’s house. I hadn’t seen his mum in a few weeks.
“You okay?” Harry asked as he noticed my attention had strayed.
“Yes, I’m just…I wish I knew when I’d stop being sad…” I answered honestly.
“No one knows, it gets better over time, I’m still sad too…”
I looked up at him and then wrapped my arm around his waist, he in turn threw his arm around my shoulder and we continued walking like this until we got to the lake. The sun was setting and it cast an orangey glow over the water.
“Summer…” Harry said between skipping stones.
“Yes Harold?” I asked, with a mock English accent.
He blushed slightly, “You remember London?”
“Of course.”
“You remember my cousin, the one who’s house we crashed at?”
“I sure do, the one with the cabin too?”
“Yes. If you haven’t gathered, he’s quite well off…”
“And…?” I arched a brow, turning to look at him.
“Well, he’s invited me and a friend to holiday with him and his wife in Ibiza.” His hand had found its way to his neck as he tugged at his skin nervously.
“Annnd…?” I said again, wondering if he was inviting me or what.
“Would you want to go with me?” He finally spat out.
I laughed slightly and he looked hurt, jokingly of course.
“Yes dummy, that sounds amazing.” I said as I pushed his chest teasingly.
He was smiling from ear to ear and he finally grabbed my hand.
“One more thing….” He bit down on his bottom lip before lifting his eyes to mine.
“Be my girlfriend again?”
This time I was ready, I didn’t hesitate. Not like at the lake, I was done wasting any time in my life. If I had learned anything in the past couple years – it was that life was short. For everyone.
“Yes, always.”

Notes

Short update, more to come this weekend.
