The Way We Used To Be - ON HOLD-

“All right mom! I’m going out, don’t wait up!” Maggie said cheerfully as she ran out the front door, not giving her mother enough time to question where she was going or more importantly; who she was going with.
Harry was down the street, leaning against a lamp post with ear buds in his ears as his head bobbed along with music she couldn’t hear. The girl skipped up towards him, placing her hands over his eyes.
“Guess who.” She said as she tried to lower my voice.
“Oh, let me guess… is it… Big Bird?!” He asked with a chuckle as he moved her hands and turned to look at her.
“Ha. Ha. You’re so hilarious, really Harry. Maybe you should give up your dreams of singing and become a standup comic. You have so much potential.” She teased as he laced his fingers with her own and they began walking.
“Hey, you saw it firsthand. I’m going to be a star.” He gloated.
“Don’t get a big head, you just made it to first base. No promises you’ll make a homerun.” She said sticking her tongue out at him.
“Oh, wait. Are we talking about the x-factor still…or…” He said as he paused and looked at her. She shoved his chest playfully, feeling a blush rise in her cheeks.
“You are such a pervert. Of course we are talking about the show.” She said as she tugged him along, they were going to a spot they’d frequented often while growing up. It was a little clearing in the middle of a wooded area right outside of their neighborhood. There had been many camp outs there, but the two had never gone alone.
“So, I am not going to make a home run with you tonight?” He said, looking hurt. Maggie laughed, feeling incredibly embarrassed.
“Harry! Stop it, you’re making me blush…” She said as she looked down at chuck taylor clad feet that were dragging the gravel as they walked.
“I’m only teasing love, calm down.” He said as he wrapped his arm around her shoulder. She sighed and leaned her head into him, trying to collect herself. These feelings were overwhelming. He’d kissed her in front of God and everybody and here they were sneaking off to do who knows what. She thought she was ready…but how can you really know for sure? There is certainly no one else she could imagine losing her innocence with…
“Earth to Mags…” Harry called, she noticed he was looking at her and they had stopped walking. She blinked and gave him a smile.
“We’re here, you gonna make it?” He asked, laughing as he tugged his bag up on his back. They walked into the dense trees and she was immediately regretting wearing shorts. It had gotten chilly. “I think I need to go back.” She joked, he turned to look at her with a perplexed expression.
“It’s cold. My hair has already grown back on my legs.” Maggie whined. He laughed and rolled his eyes.
“I brought extra sweats, you can wear them. You shaved for me? You’re too sweet.” He said and she could tell he had a smirk on his face. The cheeky bastard.
Once they had gotten far enough in, the pair found their spot. There were logs set up around a makeshift fire pit and the trees were covered in random carvings the group made over the years. She let her fingers trace along the letters as he began setting up the tent. “Did you bring food?” she asked, sliding her bag off of her shoulder and pulling out some snacks she’d brought.
“No, that was your job. I brought the sleeping supplies and you brought food. Remember?” He said as he struggled with connecting poles and fabric.
“Yeah, I was kind of hoping you would have snuck some of your mums booze though…” She said as she chewed on her lip.
“Oh, you want to have that kind of night, eh?” He asked, laughing. She stood up and walked over to help him since he was clearly struggling.
“No, I just… I don’t know, we should celebrate. Right?” Her voice was optimistic as she helped him connect the tent.
“We should and you are in luck, I actually did steal some booze.” He said with a waggle of his brows.
Once they had finally finished getting the tent set up and had eaten the appropriate camp food Maggie supplied, they were sitting against a log, looking up at the sky- the stars twinkling softly as they passed the flask full of vodka between them.
“What if you get famous, like what if you really succeed?” Maggie said without looking away from the night sky.
“Then we’ll have better camping digs.” He said with a chuckle.
She laughed and looked over at him finally, his face was the same as always – but why did this feel different? Why did she feel different?
“You won’t leave me, will you?” She felt uncharacteristically vulnerable. He shook his head, turning on his side and looking into her eyes.
“Of course not, how could I ever?” He asked as he tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
“If you get famous…why would you stay?” Maybe it was the alcohol, but she was feeling all kinds of emotions.
“Babe,” He said as he moved his face closer to hers. “You’re everything. I could never not be with you—if I don’t stay, I’ll bring you along definitely.” He said with a smirk. She laughed and tucked her head down, feeling the buzz of the alcohol.
He didn’t miss a beat and soon their lips were locked in a heated embrace. It was a mess of touching and tasting, while clothes were hastily being torn from their bodies as they tangled together under a clear sky.
“Are you sure…” He said as he breathed, lips parting only momentarily.
She smiled shyly at him,
“Yes….”
