The Way We Used To Be - ON HOLD-

four

Harry and Maggie never told anyone they had kissed that night; they never told anyone that they still kissed at every sleepover.
They never let anyone know that they liked each other; they never even acted remotely interested in one another. Only when the lights were all out and everyone was asleep.
The sleepovers got a little more spread out once the boys had gone into high school.
But they never skipped the tradition of a birthday sleepover.
The twins were turning 14 and Maggie was freshly thirteen. This one was different though, because Mel and Oliver had been dating for almost 6 months now, she didn’t really hang out with Scarlett and Maggie; she was only there for Oliver. They figured she’d always only been there for him really.
Scarlett and Maggie had gone ahead and gone to Maggie’s room, Mel stayed behind with the Oliver in the basement. Harry and Aiden were playing a video game and couldn’t really be bothered.
“I hate that she’s here.” Scar said as she plopped down on the mattress. Maggie shrugged, sitting beside her.
“She really likes him and I think he really likes her…” She knew Oli was obsessed, but she didn’t know exactly how healthy it was.
“She’s a twit.” Scar said looking at Maggie.
“I know, but don’t worry about her. Let’s do something else, mom has the sex and city dvd box set and we could totally sneak it in and watch it? Maggie offered.
Scar rolled her eyes, “You’re such a girl.”
“Clearly.” Maggie said with a laugh. They opted for an x-files marathon instead and got cozy in Maggie’s queen size bed. Scarlett fell asleep around 1:00am and Maggie looked at her phone which was laying on the table beside her. She had one text from Harry.
“Our spot?” Was all it said.
Maggie smiled and looked over at Scar, making sure she was out. She slowly crept out of the bed and into the hallway, trying hard not to make any floor boards squeak. She figured Mel had gone home because she wasn’t in her bedroom, unless she’d been brave enough to sneak into Oliver’s room.
Once Maggie had successfully made it into the basement she looked around the room, it was dark and hard to see – there was a few dim night lights plugged in on the wall, but she couldn’t make out anything. She felt a rush of nerves, she was scared and excited and feeling on edge.
“Harry?” She whisper yelled, readying herself for when he would pop out at her. Because he always did that.
When he didn’t jump she walked forward a few more steps, wishing she could have brought a flashlight.
“Boo.” Harry said as he walked up behind her, they were almost the same height, but Maggie was getting taller every day. She turned quickly and shoved him as she gasped.
“Every time.” He said with a hushed laugh.
“You’re an ass.” Maggie said shaking her head.
“You’re late.” He said, bringing his phone to his face which gave off some light. She looked at him, his hair was growing into curls and his face was so cute.
“Sorry.” She said before stepping forward and pressing her lips to his. Their kisses had gotten a little more mature since that first time.
Now they would part their lips, they felt very grown up. On this night though, Maggie felt Harry slipping his tongue between her lips. She pulled back and looked at him.
“What are you doing…?” She asked, her eyes had adjusted to the dark more and she could make out his features.
“I thought you’d like it?” He said with a shrug.
“I think I do, it just scared me…” She admitted.
“Want to try again?” He asked, his hand taking hers. She felt her heart racing; his skin was warm against her cold digits.
“Yes.” Maggie said softly. He pressed his lips to hers again, this time their tongues met in the middle.
They had their first official make out session. They’d found themselves sitting on the couch, kissing like idiots, until Maggie’s mind was pulled away by the sound of the basement door opening. She pulled away promptly and put her finger to his lips to keep him from speaking.
“Someone’s coming.” She whispered before standing and pulling him behind her to the closet. She opened the door as slowly as possible and they crammed inside. It was very small; she couldn’t understand how Oli and Mel had done anything in here that night.
She was pressed against Harry, trying her hardest not to breathe. She heard footsteps coming down the stairs and heard hushed voices.
“We are going to be so busted…” Harry said but Maggie slid her hand over his mouth.
“We have to be quiet, I don’t want to wake your parents up.” Mel’s voice was very quiet, but they knew it was her.
“Okay.” She heard another voice answer, she thought it was Oli.
“Gross.” She mouthed to Harry. She heard shuffling and kissing. Harry stifled his laughter.
“I don’t want to hear this” He said quietly, his lips close to Maggie’s ear.
She leaned in, this time speaking into his ear. “We can’t really walk out on them, then we’ll be caught too.” She said leaning back to look at him.
He leaned in again. “Follow my lead.” He said before opening the door and walking out.
Mel shuffled to cover herself up once she realized someone was walking out of the closet.
“Just pretend you didn’t see us and we’ll say the same.” Harry said as he took Maggie’s hand and pulled her with him towards the stairs.
Maggie looked at the couch as they got to the stairs, realizing it was Aiden on the couch and not Oliver. She was about to say something but Harry tugged her and they walked up the stairs.
“That was….” Maggie said as they stood in the kitchen, Harry had opened the fridge and was grabbing a juice.
“I know, but…we can’t say anything.” He said, closing the door and turning towards her.
“But, Oliver should know” Maggie said, realizing how much it would hurt him to know.
“We can’t say anything without giving a reason why we were down there. It’s best to just keep quiet Mags.” Harry said as he sucked the straw of the juice box.
“We should stop doing this.” She said, crossing her arms and looking at him.
“What? Why?” Harry asked, looking across at her.
“Because…I don’t know, it’s wrong.” She said shrugging.
“How? It’s nothing serious, it’s just a kiss.” Harry said, clearly feeling a little hurt by the insinuation it was wrong.
Maggie sighed and turned, “I’m going to bed. I’ll see you in the morning.” She said as she walked off, Harry followed her up the stairs and stopped her before she could go into her room.
“This is my favorite thing Maggie, I look forward to this all the time. I don’t want to stop.” He said as he pulled her to him.
“We’ll talk about it next time, okay?” She offered, giving him a little hope.
He kissed her softly and gave her a smirk “Good night Mags”
Scarlett was snoring when Maggie got into the room; she sighed and crawled into the bed.
Torn over whether to share the information or keep it quiet like Harry suggested.
