The Guardian and the Miscreant
The First Day
Ophelia's POV
I think I'm shaking like a leaf right now and I'm secretly pleading no one notices. I'm walking with Xandra and as I glance her way she looks as if there isn't a care in the world. I try to mimick her actions and look more laid back but I think I look high now. "Just be yourself", I keep repeating my mother's words to me and try to think of other things than my very first day of college.
As we near the campus I get a real-life view of what Citadel looks like. It's pretty big. A lot bigger than any of the schools I ever went to. Well, that's probably because it's a college. But it's not too big you know? It's nothing like a university. As you get closer you can see there's two buldings. There's a main building, a little bigger than the other. Another one placed pretty close to the main, about 20 yards away. There was even a walkway from one to another.
Oh god.
The panic really started setting in now. Now I was thinking of every possible thing that could go wrong today. What if I got lost? What if the professors are really rough on us? What if I don't have everything I need?As I was dwelling on the next 7 hours like it was doomsday I didn't even see where I was going.
"Ooof"
I had just tumbled into another student. All my books that I once held tightly to my chest had just toppled over into a big pile. Xandra stopped. I stopped. The student stopped. Everything stopped. I could feel my cheeks burn with heat and I couldn't imagine the deep shade of red they were at this moment. I looked up and saw a boy rubbing his head where I had bumped into him. His eyes were kind've squinted and I guessed that was because he was in pain. He let out a groan.
"I am so sorry!", I exclaimed. I think I covered everything that could've gone wrong today besides this. "No, no it's ok", he mumbled. I bent down to collect my books and he knelt down along with me. "Here lemme help you", he picked up some remaining books and handed them to me. When we stood up he greeted me,"Hi, I'm Niall. Niall Horan", he said politely. There was something in his tone that didn't sound American. British maybe? He stuck out his hand and I shook it. "I'm Ophelia." I said hoping he's never seen the play Hamlet. "Like from that Shakespeare play?" Well, so much for keeping the name secret. "Um, yeah I guess", I breathed a nervous laugh. "Again, I'm sorry about that, uh, collison", I said. "Nah, it's cool, don't worry about it". He had dirty blonde hair, most of the brown came from his roots. He had it styled up in a, uhm, well there's a name for it I just can't recall it. And his eyes, oh my gosh. They were beautiful. They were like a really blue sea, but they also had green specks scattered in them.
"Well, I guess I'll see you around, Ophelia". "Yeah I'll see you later", I lifted my hand gving a tiny wave. He walked away towards the entrance. Throughout the whole ordeal Xandra had been standing there like a spectator. "What was that?!" she said surprised. "I don't know! I was zoned out and I didn't see where I was going". "No, I mean with that guy! He is super cute, and I think he has the hots for you", she said teasingly and gave me a wink. "Oh, shut up! How do you even know? We said, like, 5 words to each other." "Sometimes that's all it takes Oph, haven't you ever heard of love at first sight?" "Yes, I have heard of it and I don't believe in that nonsense. You can't just love someone the second you lay eyes on them, you have to fall in love with someone." "Ughhh, you are so argumenative!", she exclaimed with fake annotance in her voice. "Honey, you're missing the 't' in argumentative.", I am really OCD about spelling, grammar, and pronunciations. "Whatever it's not like I use that word anyways", I laughed at her playful ignorance.
When I walked into Citadel I felt a little less stressed knowing I now know at least one person at this school.
