I was out for three days. I heard bits of conversations but it was like I was too sleepy to open my eyes.

I hear, what I presume to be, doctors talking in hushed voices.

"She's lucky."

"Five more minutes and she would have been dead."

I heard Isaac and my family.

"She's still breathing."

"She's going to be alright," Isaac said more than once a day. I'm pretty sure he was trying to convince himself more than anyone else.

I would black out again for a few hours and then I would be able to hear them again. They went home more than once.

I felt an almost constant pressure in my hand. I didn't know what it was but it was almost always there.

I also felt off balance. At the time I didn't realize that I had lost an arm.

Finally after a long time in the dark, I was able to open my eyes. I saw a hospital room. On the opposite wall was a mural. It was of underwater ocean life. I saw balloons and cards everywhere. There was more than one sign. One sign covered a large area of the mural.

There were four chairs and two couches in the room. On one couch were Quinn, Abbi, Eric, and Anna. On the other couch were Sydney, Ellie, Mara, and Taylor. Nana, Papa, Jake, and Brady sat in the chairs. Isaac was laying next to me. He was gripping my hand for almost dear life. Like if he let go I would slip away.

They were all asleep. I looked at the clock and was able to make out the numbers in the dark. It was one in the morning. I moved just a little, which was really hard because I wasn't balanced with only one arm. Isaac shot straight up.

"Meg, you're awake," he whispered. He hugged me tight. I hugged him back as best I could.

"What happened?" I looked at the space where my arm should have been. I hadn't really known until then that I only had one arm. I was on the verge of tears while Isaac told me everything that had happened. He didn't let go of my hand at all.

"Thank you," I said after a few minutes of silence.

"For what?"

"For everything that you did. I still remember some of it. You left out the part how you paddled a ways without anyone helping you. You also forgot the part where you didn't lie to me and say that I was going to be fine." He laid back down and I put my head on his shoulder.

"I would do anything for you. You are my best friend," he whispered.

We both fell asleep, only to be woken up a few hours later by a nurse. "She's awake," the nurse said like I wasn't even there.

"And I'm thirsty," I said. She ran and got the doctor. He wasn't quiet at all so everyone woke up.

"Megan," Nana said. She rushed over to me and sat next to Isaac. Isaac let her hold my hand for a while but Isaac stayed next to me. Everyone crowded around until the doctor told them that he needed everyone to leave.

"No I'm staying," Isaac said. I squeezed his hand appreciably.

"He's been like this since we got here," Jake said.

"So sweet," Anna said.

"Love birds," Sydney said in a sing-song voice.

"He has only left your side like five times," Papa said.

"Everyone out," the doctor said.

"Isaac gets to stay," I said.

"And Nana and Papa if they want to."

"We'd better go and watch the rascals," Papa said as he followed everyone out. Nana said goodbye and left too.

The doctor got right to work. He unwrapped the gauze and peeled off the bandage. I didn't look. Isaac gripped my hand and looked for me.

"You are doing very good. Should be able to leave in a month," he said as he put another bandage back on and wrapped me up.

"A month?" That was a really long time. I would be missing perfect surfing weather.

"You were just in a serious accident. You can't even get out of this bed for a week," he said.

"I hate this," I said as I laid back down on the pillow.

"I'll go send your family in." The doctor left followed by the nurses.

​"It's okay. I'll stay with you the whole time," Isaac said as he squeezed my hand.
