His Truth
Samantha's POV:
We were back at Louis's flat, catching up since we hadn't seen each other in over two years. Right now, we were both sitting cross-legged on Louis's bed.
"What's your history with Austin?" I asked Louis, my curiosity only growing bigger by the second. I hoped that information might quench the seemingly unsatisfactory thirst for Louis's knowledge.
Louis traced patterns on the blanket delicately, slowly, as if trying to stall. "I was hoping you'd forget," he admitted to me, his blue eyes staring.
"Me, forget? Never," I teased. Just like the old times.
He cracked that fabulous (or should I say fabulouis) smile of his. "Well," he hesitated, "What do you want to know?"
"Louis, stop stalling," I groaned, "I want to know everything."
He sighed and then frowned. I reached out and placed a hand on his elbow. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to," I said.
"No, it isn't that," Louis told me. "It's just that you might be in danger because of my truth."
"I'm not afraid."
Drawing in a shaky breath, Louis poured the truth out.
"I was only fourteen when Austin approached me. He was the leader of the biggest and most frightening gang. I don't know why he chose me, but he did and that was the problem.
"He forced me into a bet with his friend, Mark. He betted that I couldn't go through the biggest forest in my town without chickening out. He told me that if I lost, I had to pay a huge amount of money.
"Mark was right. I couldn't make it through the forest without being scared. I couldn't pay, so my sister did. Aria's death was my fault, Sammie! If I was braver, she didn't have to die." He was sobbing now, the vision of his sister's broken body in his eyes. "The worst thing is that it was my fault."
"But you never talked about Aria. Ever," I spoke gently.
"I was too ashamed. And now Austin is out to get me to pay the price that I already laid." Louis sounded so miserable so I took him in my open arms and we laid there, crying together.
