A Girl Named Bug

Chapter 1

I walked around the dining area, checking on the customers. I tended to any of their needs, trying to be kind and as tentative as possible. Although the lack of care in my appearance kept people at a good distance from me. I didn’t care though. My hair just thrown up into a loose pony tail, clothes hanging loosely on my body, with minimal makeup on my face. Needless to say I didn’t catch the attention of many people, but I guess for the most part I enjoyed being invisible. I enjoyed the invisibility because I hated everything about myself.
I was lost in thought until I noticed a boy around my age enter the restaurant. His long curly hair fell at shoulder length. I continued to move my eyes around in an attempt to get a better look, embarrassment shown as my cheeks reddened when his eyes met my curious gaze. His eyes a beautiful green that pierced into my boring brown eyes. He smiled flashing me a rather large grin a dimple prominent on his face. I knew I had been caught, he let out a soft chuckle as my eyes quickly darted in the direction of the ground.
My eyes followed him as he selected a booth and placed himself in its seat. I grabbed a menu walking toward the booth he had selected, more nervous than usual as I go to interact with a customer. “ Hello my name is Bug, and I will be your server tonight.” I smiled shyly at him as I placed the menu on the table in-front of him. “Can I get you something to drink?” I questioned him. He pushed his lips slightly together before responding “water.” His eyes set on me intently as he spoke. I smiled in response. “I will be right back with that.”
As I walked back in the direction of the table, I noticed a blond haired boy sitting opposite side the curly haired boy in the booth. I pick up another menu and place it in-font of him as I simultaneously set the cup of water in front of the other boy. “Thank you.” He slightly smiled. Before I could speak the blond haired boy interrupted. “Hi I am Niall, you must be Bug.” He lightly laughed winking at me, as a large smile plastered upon his face. He was very beautiful, I couldn’t help but avert my eyes to the ground. He seemed amused and a bit disappointed in my action. But I couldn’t look at him straight, I was too nervous. I knew my place in the world, and I would not allow myself to be taken in by the two beautiful boys who currently had their attention on me. I knew better than to get my hopes up, my confidence almost non existent. Despite myself I enjoyed the attention they gave me, it was something I was not used to.
Once again Niall spoke. “I am Harry’s friend.” He stated, while he gestured toward the curly haired boy. My eyes followed. I was met with a set of beautiful green eyes and flushed cheeks. “Sorry” he mouthed to me, as he playfully rolled his eyes at Niall. “I will give you two a minute.” I smiled as I turned to walk away. “See you in a few Bug.” Niall yelled after me. I turned slightly around, as I did so Harry nudged Niall back in the booth as he kicked him underneath the table. I couldn’t help but to let out a small laugh. Harry’s eyes darted toward me as he realized he had been caught. We held our gaze for a moment, as Niall looked back and fourth between us letting out a knowing laugh. My eyes fell to the floor as a slight smile overtook my lips. I then continued tending to the other customers.
After I had notice six minutes had passed, I walked myself back to the booth. “Are we ready to order?” I exclaimed at them as if cheering them on. Niall laughed at my cheery disposition. “You’re cute.” Immediately my face flushed as my vision quickly darted to the floor. After A few seconds I courageously looked back up at the two boys, deciding to ignore Niall’s playful comment; pen in my hand as I listened intently writing down their orders.
“I will get that out to you as soon as possible.” I quickly state while turning on my heal. As I do so, I feel my hand taken back. “Can I get some water?” Niall questioned me while looking me up and down, then turning his gaze to Harry as if to get some sort of reaction from him. “Of course” I smile and walk away. Quickly I return to the table with the cup full of water “Thank you.” He smiled once again returning to his playful disposition.
I continued my rounds for the next fifteen minutes, continually checking on the two beautiful boys who were Harry and Niall. I couldn’t help but return to them, Niall’s playful and flirty personality was amusing I enjoyed it very much. On the other hand Harry’s shy yet confidently mysterious demeanor drew me in. I couldn’t help but want to know more about him.
As I returned to their booth, a tall slender female with long light brown hair towered over Harry as he sat in the booth. Her dress was skin tight exposing every curve perfectly. Niall’s eyes were quick to warn Harry of my presence. “Your check” My voice hitched as I fought off a bit of jealousy in my mind. She laughed in amusement. “Oh honey like you could ever have a chance with him.” The tone in her voice mocked me. The look on Niall and Harry’s eyes turned to concern as I give a light smile turning my back toward the table.
I knew she was right but, I refused to give her the satisfaction of a response like I knew she expected me to. I turned my head back to the boys “Enjoy your evening.” I smiled my gaze completely ignoring her presence. Niall called back to me. “You to Bug.” A large smile plastered on his face as he spoke. An annoyingly loud screech came from the girl as she mockingly laughed. “Bug what kind of name is that?” She smirked back at me. Once again instead of giving her a response I smiled back at the boys, ignoring the not so intimidating glare toward me.
I stood in the front foyer, as the group of three made their way out of the restaurant. Niall’s bright blue eyes met mine as he smiled largely. “Bye Bug, see you next time.” He winked at me, I smiled back playfully in response. “Bye.” Harry stepped forward, the girl following close behind. He looked up at me a small smile forming on his lips, only to quickly fall as she reached for his hand in an attempt to entangle her fingers into his. He pulled away quickly. She looked at him wounded and confused, as her eyes followed his gaze darting in my direction. If looks could kill consider me dead. I chose to ignore her as my focus remained on Harry. I couldn’t help but take in his every feature. Normally I would avert my vision to the floor having no confidence but she was challenging me, and I would not giver her the satisfaction of letting her know that I had very little confidence in myself.
Niall now clearly annoyed with the unfolding situation marched back toward us. “Let it go Kristen.” He paused looking between me and Harry as our focus remained on each other. “He was never interested in you.” He harshly stated. Her angry eyes met Niall, the cheerful blue instantly darkening as she glared at him. Annoyance written all over her face. Niall’s eyes softened as I met his gaze. “Why are you even here?” He questioned her, placing himself in between the two of us. “Not that it is any of your business.” She paused looking at him mockingly. “A friend of mine, saw Harry dining alone. I didn’t expect you to be here.” She stated, her tone clearly annoyed with his presence. “I wanted to keep him company.” She smirked back at Harry who was quiet the entire time, obviously uncomfortable with the unfolding situation.
It looked as if Harry’s skin crawled as Kristen once again reached for his rather large hand. He bawled his hands into a tight fist, as his eyes met Niall’s begging for him to intervene. His eyes had a sudden darkness behind their soft green glow.
Before Niall had the chance to speak, Harry’s voice dominated the room. “I have never been interested in you.” His eyes intently on Kristen. Her eyes saddened by the words that fell out of Harry’s mouth. He looked as though he regretted being so harsh. Tears threatened to fall from his eyes, clear that he wanted to comfort away the pain he had just inflicted on her. “Obviously that is not true you care about me, the tears forming in your eyes tell me everything I need to know.” She smirks in my direction, as if trying to rub it in my face that she has this effect on him.
Immediately Harry notices what she is doing, pushing her away from him. Niall’s eyes full of concern, as anger becomes written all over Harry’s face. “I would never waist a tear on you.” He spat at her. The smirk almost immediately fell from her lips, as his words sunk into her head. “Harry” She whined, as he stepped back from her. “All you do is manipulate, it’s what you are good at. I want no part of it.” He yelled at her with a harsh tone. She stood in silence, clearly upset. “Please leave me alone.” Harry instructed, his eyes almost black. Tears fell down her face as she turned and left completely ignoring my existence.
Harry’s eyes softened as his eyes met my gaze. The bright green glow slowly returning. A small smile spread over his lips. “I am sorry about her.” He kept his eyes set on my less stunning brown eyes. I felt small as his Harry’s dominating height walked toward me. “It was nice to meet you Bug.” He smiled, reaching for my hand. As my hand was in his grasp he pulled me close to his body. My head below his chin. My heart felt it was going to beat out of my chest. He dipped his head down, I could feel his hot breath against my neck. Shivers ran through my entire body. “I am not now, nor have I ever been interested in her.” His husky voice whispered into my ear. I felt a smile form on his lips as he purposely brushed them against the base of my neck.
My face was red as Harry pulled away, I could feel the heat radiating from within. Our eyes met only for a second, until my vision desperately fought to find the ground. Harry laughed in amusement. “We will be back.” The two beautiful boys spoke in unison, as they walked out the door. My eyes followed behind them as they made their exit. Desperate to get one last look, in fear that I would soon wake up from what I was positive is a dream. Their heads turned slightly, as they both let out a small laugh, knowing I had not taken my focus from them. Once again my cheeks reddened as I shyly smiled waving them out. “Bye” I called, as I watched them disappear into the night.
I walked back to clear the now empty booth, finding a note written upon a neatly placed napkin. “See you soon babe. x” Below the napkin lay a fifty dollar bill. My eyes widened, I cannot except this. I tucked the napkin into my pocket, as I had the bill in my hand running out the foyer toward the parking lot. My eyes scanned the lot hoping that the two had not taken off. Finally my eyes found the two boys standing against their separate cars. Cautiously I walked toward them clearing my throat. Their eyes shot up at me, clearly startled not expecting my presence.
I nervously placed my hand forward. “I cannot except this.” The two of them glanced back and forth between each other. “Take it.” Harry finally spoke in a stern voice. I refused to let up. “This is too much.” I stated trying to hold my ground. “It is the least I can give you after the scene we caused.” His voice softened as he lightly chuckled. My face burned in embarrassment. “You don’t have to.” I insisted pushing my hand closer to him. Niall’s eyes darted between us in anticipation. “You are very stubborn.” Harry playfully rolled his eyes at me. “I would like to think more determined.” I gave a sly smile.
Finally Harry lifted out his hand. As he did so I smiled assuming I had won, instead he reached for my chin; lifting my head so our eyes met. He held my face in place for a brief moment, as if examining it. “Goodnight Bug” He kissed my cheek, then proceeded to lock himself into his vehicle. “I’ll call you tomorrow.” He yelled back at Niall before driving off. Niall only nodded in response.
Before I could move Niall reached around my shoulder pulling me into a tight hug. I could feel every toned muscle as he body tightened around mine. After a moment I surrendered into the hug, wrapping my arms around his lower back. My head momentarily lay against his shoulder. I knew he was letting me indulge myself, holding me longer than intended. Finally I release my hold on him, only looking up to see a smug grin on his face. “I’ll see you around.” His eyes hopeful as he stepped into his car. “You are gonna have to meet my girlfriend.” He paused looking for a reaction. “I think she would love you.” I smiled at him. “I would like that.” I spoke honestly. He gave me a small wave before driving off. I watched his car till it was no longer in my line of vision. This was an eventful night. I lightly laughed to myself as I walk back toward the restaurant.
