The Newbie

Some Getting Used To

You would think from moving around a lot and starting at new schools every so often we would get the hang of it. That's not exactly true. Sure, starting off at a new school isn't too difficult but when everyone has an accent that you're not used to and they speak so quickly it guest confusing. At Springview Riley and I had a "tour buddy" according to headmaster Rivers. My "tour buddy" had long, damaged, brown hair, a unibrow, and a pigeon feet. It seemed as if Shelly had nothing better to do than show a new kid around school. Was she doing this for extra credit or something? I know I wouldn't be caught dead doing this back home. She seemed nice but too excited about Springview. The whole time she was going on and on about the school's history, I kept fidgeting with my skirt. Who makes girls wear skirts, tights, and flats to school?
School Uniforms
First class, physics. GREAT. It doesn't help that I already took AP physics last year and I passed with flying colors. Why wouldn't they accept those scores and let me skip physics? I swear this school system is so different than the one back home. After getting lost 3 times, I finally made it to the correct room. When I entered the room, everyone stopped what they were doing and stared at me. This I was used to. I scanned the room for open seats but the only seat left was next to a kid who looked like he was half asleep. I quietly took my seat. The professor seemed to be late. The kid next to me didn't even move when I bumped his arm as I placed my book bag on the table. He smelt like alcohol and weed. Can't say that was something new. A lot of kids back home would drink and smoke and spend hundreds of dollars going out because they could and would never get in trouble. I can see that's how it is here. The only difference is that no one would show up hungover or high to school.
About 15 minutes after class should have started the professor walked in. His hair was ruffled and he was panting. He looked like he was in pretty good shape for his age but I assume he was running from the parking lot to get here.
"Alright class, we have a new student from North Carolina today. Why don't we all give her a warm Springview welcome. Jamie, can you stand up please and tell us a bit about yourself?"
This somewhat took me by surprise. I never was asked to speak about myself in front of the class. Normally the teacher just stated my name and went on with his class.
"Hi everyone. Well like you said, I'm North Carolina. My family and I moved here a couple of days ago because of my dad's job. My brother is a year older than me and he enrolled here as well. His name is Riley. Uh. I'm 16 and I play soccer. I guess you guys would call it football. So yeah." Well that was awkward
Everyone just stared. Some girls whispered to each other and others just dosed off. The kid next to me woke up though and stared directly at me. I felt a bit uncomfortable. When I looked over to him, I noticed his hair wasn't really brushed but it was groomed enough to get by. He had green eyes and a couple of freckles on his nose. He wasn't bad looking. Actually he was kinda gorgeous. His eyes were just memorizing.
"Hi, I'm Harry. I'm in your brother's year. You're a bit young to be taking physics aren't you?" His voice was raspy and deep. The accent threw me off guard. Unlike the other kids I heard around the school, his was a bit different. I liked it. I've always loved accents. In my dreams I would marry a British guy and our kids would have accents and it was lovely. Harry stuck out his hand to shake mine. It was then I noticed his tattoos. I wouldn't expect someone from this school to have tattoos, let alone more than one.

The only time I saw my brother was at our lockers, lunch, and free period. I guess it was rare for a second year, sophomore, or whatever they called it here to have a free period, but I did.
"So Riles, how's your day been?"
"Well I can tell you one thing, all the girls love me" I rolled my eyes at his statement. Of course that's what he would be focusing on. Riley always seemed to be distracted by girls but they never interfered with his grades or sports. Before leaving, Riley broke up with his "girlfriend" Claire. I never thought they were serious since he never brought her home to meet mom and dad. I knew her since she went to Cary Academy with me and wouldn't shut up about him. You could say she was obsessed.
From the corner of my eye I spotted that guy Harry. He wasn't too hard to find around school. He was the only boy with a untucked shirt, messy hair, and was always flirting with the girls.
"So I guess you've met him already" Riley stated, interrupting my thoughts
"Huh?"
"That Harry kid. He's in my econ class. I heard all the girls fawn after him since he can sing and all that crap" I could tell Riley was upset that he had competition but after all we were the "newbies"
