Winter

"Sorry, I guess I just blanked," I mumble while looking through a box laying on the counter. "Hey, do we have anymore chocolate cookies?"
"No, Jacob took the last box to Freddie's last night. He slept round to say goodbye so he should be back soon. Now be a dear and help me take these boxes to the van. We will be leaving when Jacob gets back" and with that she walks out the house, a large box of plates and bowls in her arms.

Jacob soon arrives home with his arms full of bags and balloons saying, 'We will miss you!'.
"Mummy, look at what my friends gave me! They gave me sweets and toys!" He chirps in his annoying kid voice.
"Mummy, look what my friends gave me!" I mimic.
"You're just jealous because you don't have any friends!" He shoots at me.
"You're such a di-" I get cut off by my mum clearing her throat.
"Jacob, don't be mean to your sister and Meghan, mind your language around your brother. His nine year old virgin ears don't want to be raped by your harsh words!" She tuts before climbing into the taxi which will take us to the airport. I also climb in with Jacob sitting behind me, kicking my seat.
"What is virgin?" He asks a bit too loudly. Great, this is going to be a long flight.

"Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" Jacob chants from the tall leather seat next to me. He has been asking us for the last eight hours. If he looked out the damn window he insisted on sitting next to, he would see where we are. "Are we there yet?"
"No".
"Are we there yet?"
"No!"
"Are we there ye-"
"Yes!" I shout leaning over him to look out the window. All you could see was pink fluffy clouds but after they cleared the airport came into sight.
"Agh! We are going to crash!" Jacob screams while thrashing around in his seat causing a few people look at us in disgust.
"Jacob, shut the fuck up and look out the window!" I whisper/yell. Slowly Jacob turns and looks out to see the aqua sea and palm trees.
"Meghan, is this our new home?" He asks calming down.

Long boarding, surf boarding, sun bathing. This is going to be our new life. Here, in California, is our new home. The first thing I want to do is find some friends. All through school in England I was the girl with no friends. I was the one who didn't wear cake makeup. I was the girl who wore shorts instead of skirts. I was the girl who played football instead of going out shopping. I was the odd one out meaning no one wanted to be my friend. This may sound lonely but I had my books and music to keep me going. At drastic times I would go to the park with Jacob and his friends to play football, or help my mum with shopping or cooking. I also used to go fishing with my dad, but he is gone now and trust me, that is a good thing.
"Yes Jacob, this is our new home." I say with a small smile creeping onto my face. We are free to do what we want and we are free from danger, I hope.
