Love Is Where They Are

Chapter Three

The incessant beeping of my alarm caused me to wake up. Ugh. It was morning. And, a Monday. That's NEVER a good combination. I shut off the alarm and rolled over, groaning as I put pressure on some of my new bruises. I heard my door open and was about to yell at them, but as I turned, I realized that it was my mom. She sat down on my bed and smiled at me before moving my hair out of my face. "C'mon honey, you have to get up. You have that big Biology test today, remember?" she told me. I smiled back at her. I was happy now, because I would get to see Mrs. Rietz today. She was the sweetest teacher ever. She's the one who got me into reading, and made me realize that you can go anywhere if you read.
Oh, did I not mention I'm into reading? Well, I am, especially romance novels, such as Fallen, Crash, The Fault In Our Stars, thingslike that. I especially like the ones with angels and the paranormal. I guess some par of me wishes I could have a Prince Charming like everyone else.
Mom got up and shut the door behind her so that I could get dressed in peace. I grabbed a white tank top and matching bra and slipped them on. Over the tank top I put a see-through turquoise lace shirt. White jeans and white Converse, along with a turquoise leather purse and mascara, completed my look. I grabbed my lime green backpack and paused only to grab an apple on my way out the door. I pulled my ear buds out of my purse and pushed play on the screen of my iPod. Heartbeat Song by Kelly Clarkson started playing, and I began to walk in time to the music.
I started to bob my head, and was so completely absorbed that I didn't notice the black Range Rover pull up next to me until it honked. I jumped, startled, and pulled out my ear buds. I smiled as a curly-haired boy leaned his head out of the right-side window. "Hi Harry." I said. He grinned. "What's a pretty girl like you doing out on the streets, love?" I smiled. Did he just say I was pretty? I shrugged. "I walk every day." Harry frowned. "Why?" he asked. I chuckled.
"I like being alone." I gestured to the houses around me. "I like to look at the houses and imagine what goes on in these people's every day lives." I sighed. "I love watching the trees change in the fall, and then watching the leaves bud and grow during the spring. It's wonderful to be able to walk by and just watch their progress." I had forgotten that I was talking to Harry as I twirled around in a moment of girlish wonder. "I guess there's still a part of me that believes in happily ever after." I said, reaching out to finger one of the bright green leaves.
I suddenly remembered where I was and immediately blushed. I tucked a piece of hair behind my ear and cleared my throat before I dared look at Harry. He was staring at me with something akin to wonder in his eyes. He smiled at me. "Everyone should have a part of them that still believes in that stuff." he said. I smiled. He opened the driver's side door and got out. "So, would you like to continue walking
or would you rather catch a ride with me?" I laughed, not quite believing him. "Why should I get in the car with you? I barely know you." Harry scratched the back of his neck, obviously nervous. "I would like to get to know you better. If that's okay with you." he amended quickly after seeing my face quickly draw into a disbelieving stare, complete with a gaping jaw. I closed my mouth quickly and, without another word, stepped over to the Range Rover and started to open the door. "Ah-ah-ah." he said, rushing around to the other side. He grabbed the door handle and opened the door for me. I smiled. "Well, thank you." I said.
I started to put my books on the floorboard, but Harry grabbed the strap of my bag before I could. I looked at him, one eyebrow raised as if to say, "Where else should I put them then?" He grabbed my book bag and purse and set them carefully on the back seat of the Range Rover. With that, he motioned for me to get in the car. I hopped up and laughed. Damn! You need a step ladder just to get in the seat. Harry started the car. "What?" he asked, smiling but confused. I motioned to me. "I'm so short I might need a step-ladder in the future to get in the car." Harry laughed. "I suppose I'll have to make a trip to Wal-Mart later today after school."
My jaw dropped slightly. "You know I was kidding, right?" Harry nodded. "I know." I sighed with relief. When people buy me things, it makes me nervous. But, then he turned to me. "However, I'm buying you one anyway." I stammered something along the lines of a sentence beginning with my protestations, but he cut me off with a finger pressed against my lips. "Shush. It's done." I crossed my arms and frowned at him. "Harry, I was kidding. Don't spend your money on me." Of course, with his finger across my lips, it came across a little mangled. He laughed and I playfully snapped at his finger right when he pulled it away. He grinned. "That was hot." I blushed and tried to pull my hair I front of my face to hide it. Harry caught my hands and placed them in my lap. He moved my hair away from my face and smiled. "I like it when you blush. Your cheeks turn the most delicious shade of pink. It's enchanting." Of course, his words made me blush even harder. I pointed to the road. "Just drive. " I said. Harry laughed and started the car.
