Beautiful Disaster

Prologue

It was a stormy Tuesday afternoon. It had been raining since early the previous evening, and the sky showed no signs of clearing anytime soon. The local high school had just let out for the day, and kids of different ages scattered to their buses, some to their cars. Casper was waiting under the front awning for her mother to pick her up, like she did every day. As time ticked by, and the weather became more horrendous, Casper became impatient. Checking the time on her cell phone, she noticed it had already been twenty minutes. Tired of waiting, she decided to walk home. After all, it was only a few miles to her home. So, Casper zipped her backpack so that her books didn't get wet, she shoved her phone in her back pocket, and she started home.

Walking at a fast, steady pace, Casper passed a small park. The same park that her and Liam used to play at when she was a little girl. Liam always was the best brother, and even though he was constantly on the road and away from home, he still made the time to talk to Casper every day. Thinking of Liam put a smile on Casper's face. In just a few days, he would be returning home to visit for a few weeks, and Casper could not wait. Liam seemed to make everything better, even if only for a little while. When he would leave, Casper would cry. Even now, at eighteen years of age, it was still hard for her to say goodbye to her brother. Casper hated being left alone. Whenever she was alone, she started to think about life, and why she was even alive. No one seemed to care. No one except Liam, who was never really there. So, as she walked in the rain that Tuesday afternoon, Casper began to scratch at her scarred wrists. It had been so long since she last touched the blade, but that would all change very soon.

When she finally reached her home, she noticed that both of her parents' cars were gone. Running up to the porch, she pulled her house key out of her pocket and unlocked the front door. Once inside, she took off her boots, not bothering to lock the door behind her, and hurried upstairs to change into something more comfortable. A pair of old sweatpants and a shirt with too many stains on it suited her just fine. Wiping the tears that had spilled over onto her cheeks, Casper reached for the old shoe box at the top of her closet. Inside was a pair of running sneakers, and inside the toe of the right sneaker was her razor. Holding the thin piece of steel in her shaking hand, Casper thought long and hard about what she was about to do. Only wanting release of the pain she was feeling, she sat down on the floor and held the razor to her left wrist. Swallowing the lump in her throat, and clearing her mind of all thought, she dug the blade into her skin and dragged it across her wrist. Seeing the dark crimson run down her wrist and onto the floor made Casper smile. Not once did she cut herself and not feel pleasure. It was a hard decision to make – to cut or not to cut – but she needed to be numb for the moment. With each additional cut she made to her left wrist, she said the name of someone who made her feel worthless. Just hearing the names escape her lips made her angry. Gripping the razor tighter, she forced it deeper into her flesh. The pain was excruciating; the pain was heavenly. With a slight groan, and more tears rolling down her face, she decided to go even deeper. Blood was pouring now out of the many cuts on her arm. The cuts reached from edge to edge of her wrist, and were very deep. Feeling a bit light-headed at all the blood, Casper wanted to lie down. First though, she made the exact same cuts on her right wrist. It was a bit more difficult though, since her fingers were bloody and the razor didn't want to stay in her hand.

With blood now gushing out of both of her wrists, Casper laid down on her back with her arms reached out beside her, as if she were about to lift them and make a snow angel. Casper had accepted the fact that this could possibly be the end, and she didn't even care that she hadn't scribbled something down on paper to resemble a suicide note. Casper could feel the blood leaving her body, and as it did, she became more drowsy, like she wanted to sleep. So, she closed her eyes and listened to the rain outside, hitting the roof, she listened to the thunder booming. Fading quickly now, she thought she heard something that sounded like a car door slamming shut. Oh well, she thought, it's too late for them to save me now. The sounds around her got quieter, and a smile graced her lips as the razor fell from her hand and she slipped out of consciousness.

As Casper laid passed out and bleeding profusely on her bedroom floor, Liam and his band mates were walking up to the front door of his parents' home. They weren't supposed to be there yet, not for a couple more days. Liam pulled out his key, but as he went to unlock the door, he noticed that it was already unlocked. It was well after three o'clock, almost four, and he figured that Casper was already home. Running up the stairs first, Liam saw that his sister's bedroom door was open just a crack. Sneaking quietly to the room, Liam turned to the guys behind him and pressed his index finger to his lips to let them know to be quiet. Once they all acknowledged that they understood, Liam lead them the rest of the way to the room. When Liam flung the door open, his eyes were immediately directed to the body lying lifelessly on the floor, bleeding out.

Liam scooped Casper up in his arms and carried her down to the black Buick that they had arrived in. Zayn was driving, breaking all the rules of the road to get to the hospital in the quickest amount of time. Louis was in the passenger seat, and the others were in the back seat with Casper laid across their legs. Liam was slapping his sister's face not quite so gently, tears forming and falling from his eyes. The roads seemed to be more crowded than usual, and Liam was getting more and more frustrated. Harry, who was sat in the middle between Liam and Niall, reached for a half-empty bottle of water in the floor, and poured it on Casper's face. A quiet moan forced its way from her lips, giving the guys a glimmer of hope.

Zayn slowed the Buick to a halt in front of the emergency room doors, and Liam hurried in with Harry at his side. As soon as they walked through the doors, there was a team of nurses swarming around them. Louis had called in to the hospital on the way there so that they didn't have to wait behind whoever else was in the emergency room. The nurses took Casper back on a gurney, but left the guys to wait anxiously.

While Casper was in the back, Liam called his parents, who called their other two daughters, and told them to get to the hospital as quickly as possible. When asked what was wrong, he said the words he never wanted to: Casper tried to kill herself. When their parents arrived at the emergency room, they tried comforting Liam, even though they were panicking as well. They filled out the necessary paperwork, and then, they waited.

After about an hour, a doctor dressed in blue, blood-stained scrubs came out and called for Liam and his parents. With tear-stained faces, the Payne family followed the doctor through the double doors to the back. With an exhausted sigh, the doctor said, “Casper is going to be okay.”
