The Notebook

Follow me

“London, let me know when you get to the hotel tonight ok love?” Dad leaned over to hug me.
“I will,” I promise, kissing his cheek. I turn to swing open the car door, anxious to go find my fellow friends, and share our excitement together.
“By dad,” I flash him one last smile before slamming the car door. My suitcase on the pavement beside me, I look up at the seniors in front of me trying to find Ella and Dominic.
“London! Over here!” Ella shouts, her hand raised up in the air waving me over. I grin widely, pulling my suitcase after me.
“SO London to show up at the last moment,” Dominic hugs my shoulders as I stop beside her and Ella.
“I’m here, aren’t I?” I wink, flicking my hair out of my eyes.
“Could you believe it? A four day school trip?! Who’d ever thought this day would actually come?” Ella gushes, clapping her hand together in excitement.
“I know, I kept dreaming I forgot my suitcase and have no change of clothing for the whole week,” I tell them, making both girls giggle. They know how I get anxiety attacks when big things happen.
“Did you remember to bring your inhaler?” Dominic questions her hands on her hips.
“I have, mum asked me a million times if I had it this morning, you would think I’d die without it,” I roll my eyes.
“Yes London- you would,” Ella and Dominic say in unisons.
“Ok girls, come on and gather around, I would like all of you to get in line for the bus- spit spot,” Mrs. Gold asks of us. I grab my suitcase handle and start walking towards her, followed by my two friends.
I go to an all girls school, and today was finally the day of our senior trip, four days allowing us to wear something other than school uniform.
Our cases are taken to be put in the bus’s boot, and with every tick of a name the line of girls make it up onto the bus.
By the time Ella, Dominic and I get on, all the back seats are taken, leaving us with front seats.
“Alright girls, if you could please settle down, so we can start our journey together. Our first stop would be..” Mrs Gold speaks to the class, however I am not listening to her anymore, elbowed by Dominic and Ella. Two young man climb onto our buss and take the seat in front of me.
They both have curly hair, but one is dark brown and the other is light- almost blond.
I get nudged by Dom sitting next to me, but I turn my head looking out the window, not feeling up for tormenting the poor lads right now.
We heard rumours that the senior class gets two guys to help supervise on the trip- kind of like body guards, I guess it is true then, and I can hear the buzzing of the excited girls in back of us.
“So are you guys here to keep us safe?” Dominic questions, tapping one of them on the shoulder.
I watch from the corner of my eye, mortified by how fast she made her move.
“More like keeping you in line,” The bloke with the dark curly hair answers, flashing her a wicked smile, showing off deep dimples in the process. That’s done it, Dominic has a weak spot for boys with dimples and I can already see where this is going.
“What’s you name cheeky?” She demands, making him break out in a chuckle.
“Did you hear that Daniel? She wants to know my name,” He laughs.
The light curly haired boy turns to face us now too, gazing Dominic’s face and then moving over to me.
“I think this girls knows what she wants and is not afraid to get it,” The guy named Daniel answers.
“You’ll need to work much harder than that love,” The dark head boy says. With that, they both turn back in their seats and don’t talk to us again.
“Dom- you’re an idiot,” Ella hisses at her.
“Come on- what do you care? We have four days with them, might as well make them count,” Dominic winks.
I am still looking out the window, but I can tell the two young men were listening to the conversation.
A few hours later we stop at a beautiful look out for lunch and a toilet break.
I sit down with Ella and Dominic and a few other girls, as we eat our food, and watch the boys standing with the bus driver beside the bus.
“Did they talk to you?” Louise asks.
“Well kind of- the blond boy’s name is Daniel, but I don’t know the name of the other one yet, he wouldn’t tell me, said I needed to work harder to get it,” Dom gushes.
“Be sure Dom will get all the details” I smirk, enjoying watching my friend get excited over absolute nothing.
“The Daniel lad was totally checking London out but she didn’t even look his way,” Dom goes on.
“What? That did not happen,” I state crinkling my nose at her lie.
“Did too! Ella saw it too,” Dominic continues.
“He did stare at you- oh look you’re all red- you’ve noticed it too,” Ella giggles, her laugh sounding like a thousand bells.
“Girls- it’s time to get back on the bus, we want to make it in time to our first stop,” Mr. Gold calls out to us.
I let my friends go ahead of me, not wanting to hear the made up details of the boy’s crush on me. Instead, I look out over the landscape enjoying the cool breeze on my skin, cooling it down.
“Hey! Snow white- are you going to make us wait any longer?” I am startled by a hand placed on my shoulder, recoiling away from it.
“Sorry,” I stammer. Noting it was the dark curly boy who called out, however, it was Daniel who placed a hand on my shoulder, which now was placed by his side.
“Snow white? Really? My hair isn’t curly or black, I scoff.
“What’s your name then?” Dark curls questions.
“You’ll need to work harder than that love,” I mimic his own words to Dominic, and stride away.
“You can tell your friend it’s Harry,” He calls after me. I stop for just a moment, but then contine, smiling to myself.
“You dropped this- London,” I hear from behind me as I climb one step onto the bus. I turn to see Daniel in back of me, holding out my inhaler.
He offers it to me with a slight smile, flashing some dimples of his own.
I take it from his out stretched hand thanking him before hurrying to join my friends.
Staying behind lost me my seat next to Dominic, placing me on my own across from her and Ella, but truth is I didn’t mind, since we were faced to the aisle whispering to each other.
“What did he say?” Dominic asks in a whisper.
“Told me to tell you his name is Harry,” I grin.
“Look at that- and I didn’t even need to work for it,” She snaps her fingers in victory.
The rest of the journey was quite nice, full of laughter and gossip, sweeping me in and making me forget of my travel anxiety and making room for enjoyment.
“Alright girls- rooms of threes or fours, please, so I can give you keys. We’ll be meeting at the dining room at 18:00 for supper, before we head out to our night tour,” Mrs. Gold calls out.
Dominic and Ella pull me off the bus in blissful shouts of us being a room of three. We retrieve our suitcases and backpacks, standing in line to get a key.
There is another bus parked next to us.
“That’s the boys’ bus,” Ella whispers pointing.
“How do you know that?” I question, standing on tip toes to see over her head.
“Because Liam’s class are staying at the same place, tonight is going to be fun,” She pinches my arm, making me recoil, smacking her hand away, sending Dominic into a giggle.
“Don’t forget girls- 18:00,” Mrs. Gold says before handing me the key.
I thank her and we head off.
“Room 666? What the hell?” Ella glances at the key card in my hand.
“I like it, I feel quite devilish today,” Dominic waves her hand in a dramatic manner.
Once we enter the room, we open our cases and change clothes, Dominic refreshing her makeup while Ella tries to decide if to wear dark jeans or light.
“That Harry is just so hot- don’t you think, I wonder how old he is.. do you think he would go for a younger girl?” Dominic says, making a kissy face to the mirror.
“You’ll have to ask him to find out,” I say, pulling on a jumper, afraid to be cold on the night tour.
“I’m sure if you work for it, he’ll give in, he seems quite wicked,” Ella states.
“I know right? What do you think London?” Dom questions, turning to me.
“I don’t know.. I kind of think the other one is hotter,” I remark, concealing my face from their watchful eyes.
“That is so like you London- you should totally try and make a move on him,” Dominic encourages.
“Are you insane? They are only here to make some money- guys like them have a girl waiting for them at home, they will never give a senior girl the time of day,” I roll my eyes at her.
“God London, you’re such a party pooper you know that? You need to learn to let go a little and have fun- live in the moment,” Dominic lectures me.
I ignore her, glancing at my watch noting we are late.
“We need to go- we’ll get in trouble,” I say getting up.
“Go- I’m not ready- save us a place will you?” Ella says.
“Fine- but don’t be long ok?” I tell them, padding out the room and letting the door shut behind me. I take a deep breath shaking off Dominic’s harsh words. Dom can come off slightly bratty not thinking before talking, however she is one of my best friends and I know for a fact she has my best interest in mind, which is the reason I keep quiet, letting her ramble on about it.
“So.. You think I’m hotter?”
I spin in place, to find Daniel stood in back of me, a knowing smile on his face, hands on hips, a key card sticking out of his pocket.
“You heard that?” I choke mortified.
“I was quite surprised actually- usually girls go for Styles, thanks for boosting my self esteem,” He winks.
“Don’t flatter yourself love, it was a pick between you or him, which is not much to chose from, but let me remind you there is a whole classroom of boys here, younger and probably way more hotter then you two,” I say raising a brow. Two can play this game, and being Dominic’s best friend means I know to play it well, having the best teacher around to teach me.
“Now you’re just being plane mean,” he chuckles, not fazed by my words even a little bit.
“Come on kid, I’ll walk with you,” He touches my shoulder slightly before moving forward. I can still feel his touch even though he moved his hand away, the place staying warm.
“So you’re asthmatic?” He inquires as we walk side by side.
“You already know that, picking up my inhaler,” I state.
“Yeah, but I am trying to make small talk.. Are you going to go on the hike tomorrow then?”
“I’m asthmatic not crippled,” I snap, annoyed.
“I hope so, I know how girls try to get out of such hikes, so I was just making sure you’re not one of them.”
We reach the dining hall which is full, the only place left is next to Harry.
I inhale following Daniel over to his table.
“Where is the ginger?” Harry asks me, shifting to the side making some more room.
“Getting all dolled up,” I reply.
“Good,” He smiles cheekly.
“Sit London, unless you feel like eating and standing,” Daniel says.
I take a seat, glancing around. The girls are too busy with the boys from the other school to notice me sitting with Harry and Daniel.
“Great choice,” Dominic pulls out the chair next to me, while Ella brings a chair over from another table.
“So Ginger- who’s hotter- Daniel or me?” Harry smirks wiggling his eye brows.
Dominic pulls a face, hating when people comment on the colour of her hair.
And me- I am gobsmacked scared she’ll think I told them.
“Yeah, you should watch what you say darling, you never know who might be sharing a wall with you,” Daniel hurries to say.
His words take an immediate effect, brightening Dom’s face right away.
“That is good to know,” She comments.
“So are you like the three musketeers then?” Harry question, making Daniel snort with laughter.
“Wouldn’t you like to know?” Dominic shoots, rising to her feet, while spotting Liam walking our way, making Ella get up and follow, a skip in her stride.
“What’s her name?” Harry follows her with his gaze.
“Dominic,” I reply, watching after them. Liam catches my eye and waves, I return it, flashing him a sweet smile.
“Aren’t you going to say hi?” Daniel asks.
I glance at him, the way he is leaned back in his chair, comfortable.
I nod, and get to my feet.

The next day we are up bright and early needing to leave for the hike. Rumour has it the hike will take about 6 hours if we walk a good pace, which makes me a little nervous, since a hike that long will be hard on my lungs.
Ella and Dom take longer to get ready, staying up much later then me with Liam and his friends.
“I don’t know if I can do this hike,” Ella whines as we get onto the bus.
“Serves you right for staying up so late,” I taunt her as she slides into the seat next to me.
This time we got seats in the middle of the bus, away from Daniel and Harry.
“Here love, drink this- it will wake you up,” Dominic sites down across from us, handing over Ella two cups of Coffee, one for her and one for me.
“Thanks,” I say, taking in the smell of it.
“We’ll need our strength for today,” Dominic flashes a smirk glancing over to the two guys who just got on. I watch as Daniel’s eyes scan the bus, until he finds us, raising his brows in question- wondering maybe why we sat so far from them.
It takes two hours to drive to the trail, and once we get there, Mrs. Gold makes sure we all have enough water and hats.
“Girls- gather around please- this is Louis, he’s our guide for today, please pay attention.”
“Hello ladies, as Mrs. Gold said, I’m your guide for today, we have a 6 hour hike ahead of us, which means we need to start if we want to get back before dark, also please make sure you have enough water- you won’t have where to refill, and hats would be a good idea too, however water is more important.”
“Dom, what is cooking in your head?” I question, not missing the mischief look upon her face.
“You’ll see, I don’t want to ruin the surprise,” She winks, flicking her long hair and starting to pace.
Ella and I follow after, knowing better then to try and push for more information. I bring my long hair up in a high ponytail and adjust the straps of my backpack.
The hike starts out relatively easy and I am glad, knowing if it continues this way I will do just fine.
Dominic and Ella fill me in on what I have missed last night with the boys, a game of truth or dare and some alcohol. I am quite amazed they haven’t gotten caught since Mrs. Gold specifically said they will be checking the halls for students out of bed.
After about an hour into the hike we stop for breakfast. I am glad since I was starting to feel slightly tired. I sit down resting my back on my bag, and taking my inhaler out of my pocket, inhaling twice- just to make it a little easier when it’s time to continue. I am not hungry so I lie down and close my eyes, thinking this is a good time to catch up on some sleep.
“No don’t!” The screech wakes me, followed by cold water poured over my head, startling me and making me cough.
“You git! What was that good for?!” Ella snaps handing me some tissues to wipe at my face.
“Everyone is already up and moving but you three,” Harry comments, folding his hands over his chest seeming quite please with himself.
“That was uncalled for.. But I guess you’re used to being a wanker,” Dominic flicks her hair in his face, shifting over to help me up to my feet.
“I think they might be cross with you mate,” Daniel notes out loud.
“Ha Sharman.. They won’t be forever,” Harry winks moving closer to us.
“I’m sorry snow white ok? I do apologize, however we must be on our way,” He gestures to the trail. I send him an angry glare and stride past him, followed by my friends.
“I’m sorry London- I tried to stop him,” Ella says.
“It’s fine,” I brush her off. I am never good with people once waking up, nevertheless waken up in this manner. I walk quietly listening to Dominic and Ella talk, noting how at some point they forget about their anger with the two guys and let them join in on the conversation.
“Come on snow- don’t be like that- I said I was sorry,” Harry says as I ignore whatever it was he just said to me.
“First- my name is not snow- and second- I cannot hike and talk at the same time needing to concentrate on my breathing,” I snap at him.
“Oh well- I’m sorry- what is your name then love?”
“London,” I sigh, realizing he will not let it go until I just tell him.
“Where do we go from here?” Ella stops us.
The path breaks into two, and we stare down trying to figure out which way we should be going.
