May #4 The Conclusion (Part 4)
*Sammie’s POV (Afternoon, Wednesday the 11th)
Louis and I haven’t spoken since what I refer to as the Battle of Father Lou. Well, we have talked to each other, but only to say good morning, good night, figuring out our meals, and telling him I’m hanging out with Luke. I refuse to do anything more than that. His statement really hit me hard and it keeps replaying through my head: Well I’m sorry, is it my fault that you have no one left to take care of you?!
It honestly took everything in me not to cut myself in the hotel that night. I almost did and that’s why I called Susan up. I knew she could talk to me and calm me down. I decided that night that I would only stay overnight and then go back home. I knew Louis would be worried sick if I wasn’t at the door the next day.
Today, I’m not coming straight home from school because I’m spending time with Luke. Yes, we’re still together even after that train wreck of a first meeting. He said that it was okay because that just showed him how much Louis really cares about me, although he did get uncomfortable at the end. I apologized to him a bunch after that. We’ve been together for almost 3 months now.
I text Louis telling him I’m hanging out with Luke while I wait for him by the front doors. A few minutes later he gets here and we leave to go get some frozen yogurt. I insist on paying for the yogurt but he doesn’t let me. He’s definitely a gentleman.
We get our table and immediately Luke asks me “So have you talked to Louis?” I knew this was coming one of these days. “I don’t see why I should. He treats me like a big baby and then he rubbed it in my face that I have no one left in my life.” I say shoving a spoonful of yogurt in my mouth.
“Technically, you have Susan, Mackenzie, Hannah, Emily, him, and myself.” he says. “I know. Why can’t he understand that?” I ask. “I think he does know that. I think he was just fired up and in the moment. I don’t think he meant it how you’re thinking he did.” He’s right, I know it.
“You know he just wants to protect you.” he says finishing his yogurt. “But I’m not a kid anymore. I can be independent apart from living on my own. I can make my own decisions on the people I let into my life. I mean, I can vote!” He chuckles.
“That’s true, but you need to remember that he still sees that unsure girl you were when he first took you in. He just cares about you so much and doesn’t want anything bad to happen to you again. He can’t help but feel responsible for…basically keeping you happy. Please talk to him.” he asks grabbing my hand. How does he know all this stuff?“Can you see inside his mind or something?”
He laughs, “Actually you didn’t know this but he and I have talked since all this happened. A few days ago when you weren’t looking, I got his number from your phone and texted him. We talked about us meeting and he apologized for being so hard on me. He told me everything I just told you and he just wishes you would forgive him.” I can’t believe these boys. Well at least they’ve bonded!
I give in and I take Luke home. When we get there he asks, “Are you sure you don’t want me to go up with you?” “No, I need to talk to him by myself. Thank you, babe.” I say hugging him. “Don’t mention it. Good luck, love.” He pulls away and we kiss.
“Thanks, see you at school tomorrow.” He leaves and I take the long way to the apartment. We haven’t had a conversation in over a month and I’m about to break the ice again. I hope he isn’t too mad at me for how I’ve been treating him.
I get to the building and park. I slowly make the walk upstairs. I just want us to be okay again. I get there and take a breath outside before going in. I don’t see Louis in the kitchen or living room so he must be in his room if he’s here at all. “Louis?” I call out. A few seconds later, Louis comes out of his room and just looks at me for a minute trying to read my expression. “Hi.”
“Hi.” I say. We don’t say anything for a moment. I decide I can’t take it anymore and run to Louis hugging him. “I am so sorry, Louis.” He hugs me back tighter. “No, I’m so sorry, Sammie.” He pulls away and holds my arms. “I never should have said those things to you. I just wasn’t thinking. You know I care about you more than anything.” I take him to the couch.
“I know, I know. I just talked to Luke. He told me about you two talking and what you said. And I get it. I just feel like you should trust me a little more.” I say. “I know, you’re right. I know I can be a little overprotective sometimes. I’ll try and not worry too much.” he says.
“Okay. I’m so grateful for everything you’ve done for me and for taking me in, but I’m not the same person I was when I moved in. I’m older now and I know I can make good decisions for myself.” I say.
“I get that. I guess I sometimes I still see that unsure, unstable 17 year old from almost 10 months ago. I promise I’m gonna try and trust you more. I want what’s best for you.” He says pulling me in for a hug. “I know, but even though I don’t need you as much as I used to, I do still need you for some things. I don’t want to be without you until I’m ready.”
We pull away from the hug and he says “Don’t you worry, love. I’ll never leave you all alone. I promise I won’t let you go until you find someone else who can take care of you better.” We smile before he puts his arm around me and I lay my head on his shoulder. Well Louis and I are okay again, and I couldn’t be happier. I have my big brother back and I don’t plan on ever losing him again.
