Moving To England

Chapter Fifty-Nine

*Destiny’s POV*
*Exam Morning*

Winter. I strolled out of my house, and onto the front porch, early in the morning, still in my pyjamas. I hugged my arms against the chill. Finding the driveway, my father’s car, the walls, the trees the rooftops, and the hills buried under a foot of snow, I smiled.

What they sky is seamless and blue, the snow so white my eyes burned. I shovelled up a handful of the fresh pile of snow and threw it back onto the ground slowly, watching each snowflake float back to its new landing spot.

I walked down the front steps, barefoot, and crouched down to sit on the steps. I began making small images into the bright patch of snow which sat in front of me.

It was the morning of my first exam, after a whole month of cramming in information into my skull. Long nights spend studying. Endless days straining to prepare myself the best I can so I don’t fail all my courses.

My body seemed to react like there was a gorilla about to beat the crap me instead of being faced by a sheet of chemistry questions. Knowing very well I can ace it all, I still worry about my failing everything.

*First day of Spring*

The wind howls as the students arrive through the gates, hustling and bustling down the corridors. Friends are greeting each other with a hug or a playful punch while newcomers stand looking scared. The seniors stand, tall and proud, confidence born of experience. Soon the bells ring and everybody runs except an occasional slow coach or chatterbox.

“Another semester begins,” Harry smiled at me. The way Harry’s lips lifted upward, his one dimple crinkled. The way his teeth are perfectly aligned. The warm glow his happiness gives. His smile is a ray of sunshine, and I am a sunburn, in the cold winter day.

“Yeah,” I nodded, giving a quick kiss on his cheek before running into the school, “Race you!”

“Hey! You got a head started!” Harry screamed after me, laughing as he chased me into the school.

The previously denuded branches offered their wands of tight green bud to the brilliant rays of spring. The wind had lost its bite, it had become ambient, congenial, blowing branches and tousling the hair of pedestrians - but no longer stealing their warmth.

From the gardens waved the precocious yellow bloom of the daffodils, and should Destiny be drawn into the woodland today there were bluebells too.

She tilted her head toward the sky to feel the new heat in the sunlight's kiss. How she had missed it in these long grey London months. The only clouds were fluffy, white and quite dispersed, there would be no rain today.
