Chapter 35: First Smile
~Two weeks later~
Niall’s POV
Jana walks through the front door, dropping her bag and purse on the floor as she shuts the door. She had been gone for four days. She flew to her grandmother’s house in Savannah, Georgia because of her father’s death.
It was horrible for her. It was..horrible for me to watch her cry and be so damn depressed. I know its hard, but I miss my baby. I miss her laugh, her smile, her kisses. I don’t even get to touch her any more. Its been about a week and a half since we got the call from her grandmother.
Honestly, I think its harder for Jana because she knows she doesn’t have another true parent to depend on. Her mother is a fucking bitch for trying to barge into our lives, my opinion. I know for sure that Jana doesn’t look at her mother as her mother. No matter what, no matter what genetic thing you try to tell Jana, she’ll just say that isn’t her mother. Never has been. Never will be.
Jana has lost the most important influence in her life. The man that raised her is gone and she had no one else to love. No one can take his place in her life, I know that. Its crazy to realize how fast you can loose someone you love.
Jana doesn’t acknowledge us. She doesn’t look at me, or Tori. She doesn’t even look at the baby, which shocked me. She is quiet as she walks over to the stairs and begins the distance towards our bedroom.
‘’Daddy…’’ Tori mumble. ‘’yeah babe?’’ I ask as I look over at her, she sits beside me playing on my phone. “Is Mama still sad?’’ She asks me. “Yeah.. she is.’’ I nod gently as I slide my arm around Tori’s back, her hand grabbing mine once my arm is in place.
‘’She’ll be happy again.. I hope.’’ I mumble as Tori leans her head back on my arm as she sighs, sick of her mommy’s mood. And to be honest, I’m sick of Jana’s mood too.

~that night~
We all lied in the bed. Tori suggested we should watch a movie, and told me she wanted to make Jana feel better, so I went with it. We’re watching Madagascar, its funny. Tori and I have watched it together before. So I know the parts she likes the most.
Jana’s holding Taylor and Tori’s sitting on my lap as I lean against the headboard, so does Jana. Out of no where, I smell something.. rather disturbing. I hear a light laugh, it not Tori’s laugh. ‘’Ew Daddy.. was that you?’’ She asks me a she looks over her shoulder, her fingers pinching her nose. ‘’No.. not this time.’’ I say as I try not to breath through my nose.
I hear that laugh again. It seems as if I haven’t heard it in years, when really..I know exactly who it is. Its Jana. I look over at her and she looks down at Taylor. ‘’Jana?’’ I ask as I continue to watch her. Tori grabs the remote and presses pause as she looks over at Jana too.
‘’Mama.. are you smiling?’’ She asks in a whisper, shock to her voice. Jana nods as she laughs some more, still looking down at Taylor. She looks over at me and laughs louder and harder, but she calms down some as I raise my eyebrows, me and Tori confused. Is she going insane?
‘’What’s.. the matter, babe?’’ I ask curiously, and weirded out some by her constant laugh that begun for no reason, I assume by what I know. ‘’Taylor… farted..’’ She laughs out as she leans her head against the headboard, still laughing some.
‘’That was him?’’ Tori asks, smiling some. ‘’There was no way all that came from him.’’ I mumble, surprised. “Well it did.. Didn’t it baby?’’ She asks as she holds Taylor up in front of her. I lean in, lying my head on her shoulder as I look at him. He’s so darn cute.
‘’Isn’t that right?’’ She says in a baby voice. He looks at her, blinking a few times. He looks over at me and I swear I almost died… he smiles. ‘’Oh my god.’’ I whisper gently as he smiles again at me. ‘’He just smiled, Ni! Twice!’’ Jana squeals as she brings him towards her and kissing him on the lips, getting slobber all over hers.
‘’Oh my! You are so cute! I love it!’’ She laughs lightly as he smiles at her too. And I know for a fact, that was the first time we’ve all smiled in a while… and the first time our baby has smiled. And to be honest, it felt nice to smile again. No matter what the situation, a cute moment can fix it.
‘’Just like Daddy.’’ I wink. Jana laughs lightly at me and I smile again at our baby. He smiles back. He knows who I am. He knows I’m his daddy and that I love him with all my heart, he really does know, and that’s all that matters.
