Harry's Diary

Deception

I take a deep breath, and shake my head, picking the less of three evils. No one said the pile of hair had to be Harry’s, right?

“Taylor, I’ll talk to you later, I just realized I’m hungry,” I say, walking to the kitchen.

She looks at me skeptically but nods, following me. Half of me wishes that Harry has somehow picked up the pile of hair, but the other half of me knows that he won’t-he doesn’t have the energy. Much to my surprise, I find the kitchen floor clean, free from any blood or hair. What is even more surprising is that it seems as if Harry is bustling about in clean clothes, like everything is perfectly okay.

“Harry?” Taylor says, walking closer to the counter where Harry is working.

“Yes, Taylor?” Harry says.

I smile. He still recognizes Taylor’s voice after so long, although it’s probably because I told him she’d be here.

“I thought you weren't feeling well today.”

“No, I’m as right as rain.”

I stay rooted in my spot, observing Harry. He has his back to us, but it seems as if whatever happened earlier didn’t even happen in the first place. It seems as if his curly locks are still intact, as they are peeking out of his beanie. He also doesn’t seem to have a broken arm, as he seems to be moving both hands as he prepares the food. Then again, to one who knows the truth, looks can be deceiving.

Taylor looks at me, relieved.

“So nothing’s wrong with him after all,” she whispers. “I thought there really was something to get worked up over!”

I force myself to smile with meaning. Harry has always been a bit stage shy, but he has a talent for acting. Unless he turns around, there’s no way Taylor would know that something’s wrong.

“So how’s the bakery over at our place?” Harry asks Taylor, breaking the silence.

“Oh, it’s fine,” Taylor replies. “Same old story every day.”

“Nice of you to come visit your old co-worker.”

“Of course. Who wouldn't visit an old friend?”

“I didn't know we were friends.”

“Oh please,” I say, deciding to join in their conversation. “This is Taylor Emberly we’re talking about. Of course it would be natural of her to befriend everything she touches.”

“Like King Midas,” Harry says, laughing.

“Hey! I’m not some greedy old king who wants gold!” Taylor retaliates.

“But you are one for friendship.”

Taylor can’t help but smile at Harry’s words. “You know me so well!”

“Who wouldn't know a friend?”

I smile, imagining that Harry is smiling. Although strangers make Harry absolutely uncomfortable, it seems that people he knows well do the exact opposite to him.

Another thought, deep in the recesses of my mind also moves me to smile, mainly out of relief. It seems as if Harry’s secret is safe for the time being.
