Xenophobia
THIRTY
In the midst of it all, Khai had found herself at Violet's house. Violet ushered her friend with the puffy eyes and hollowed cheeks, quickly offering her a blanket as the harsh January weather drained all the color from her face. Khai insisted she was fine, but Violet knew much better than to believe her best friend.
She begged Khai to speak to her. Say something, anything that related to why is it that she was standing at her front step only minutes ago, half naked with puffy eyes. But despite her pleas, Khai would just stare blankly at her, shaking her head at each question being asked. Eventually, Violet gave up, running upstairs to her room to send Khai's mother a quick text, ensuring her that her daughter is safe and fine. Also silently thanking God that her parents were both called in early today at work.
Upon descending her staircase, Violet took notice a change in environment.
Music.
Violet was unable to recognize the sound that flowed fluently from the speakers. A confused expression was etched on her face, but that was soon replaced with a worried expression as she took in her best friend of seven years take a swig of a bottle.
"Khai," Violet's voice shook, in physical pain of seeing her friend hurt. "Put do-"
"This was our song y'kno..." It was the first coherent sentence Khai had said since her arrival. Violet was at loss of words as she listened to the words of the song.
I can't fool myself, I don't want nobody else to ever love me
You are my shinin' star, my guiding light, my love fantasy
There's not a minute, hour, day or night that I don't love you
You're at the top of my list 'cause I'm always thinkin' of you
Another swig.
"Bullshit," Khai spat. "Bullshit, bullshit!" She got louder with each syllable that escaped her lips. "He didn't love me. If he did he wouldn't have left!"
Violet winced as she watched Khai take another large gulp of the alcoholic drink. She wanted to say something, anything... But she was frozen. Violet has had her fair share of relationships... But she has never experienced something like this. She was unable to find the words to soothe her best friend and put her in a better place. And this realization caused tears to build up in her eyes. She wanted to help. God, did she want to help.
I still remember in the days when I scared to touch you
How I spent my day dreamin' plannin' how to say I love you
You must have known that I had feelings deep enough to swim in
That's when you opened up your heart and you told me to come in
Another swig.
And another.
"Fuck him, yeah!? Fuck his green eyes and his dumbass accent." Another swig she took, causing her to stumble over her feet. She caught herself, though, quickly gaining her computer once more before taking another gulp.
"He never deserved me in the first fucking place!" She spat, causing Violet to cower back. She had never seen Khai this upset. Khai was never one to swear and in the pass five minutes she has used profanities over three. This wasn't her. The evident vein in etched on the let side of her neck and bloodshot eyes were not her. This was not the Khai Jackson she knew.
A loud crash snapped Violet out of her thoughts. Her eyes caught sight of a vase shattered on the floor. The blonde's eyes averted from the pieces of glass on the floor to meet Khai taking another swig.
And another.
And Another.
A shrill scream escaped Khai's lips as a large piece of glass broke into the skin of her right foot, sending her to the floor. Violet raced to her friend's aid, careful enough not to repeat Khai's mistake. By time she had reached her, Khai was heaving in sadness. Choking on tears, unable to catch a breath.
"Vi," Khai's voice was barely audible. "Why am I not good enough for him? I gave him everything you know? Everything and yet it wasn't enough because of my skin." A humorous-less laugh left her lips. "Can you believe it? Something as simple as the pigmentation of my skin is what caused all this. God, I'm so stupid."
Khai went to grab the bottle but Violet kicked it out of her reach.
"Stupid?" Violet stood up. "Are you fucking kidding me? Khai, are you really gonna let this let the level of your self confidence and self worth deteriorate? None of this is your fault! Khai, Harry loves you. Yes, he left, but you don't know the reason. Stop jumping to conclusions, stop!"
"Vi-"
"No!" Violet threw up her hands in frustration. "Khai Jackson you're literally one of the most beautiful persons I've ever met. Inside and out-"
"I'm really not into a lecture, Violet."
Violet sighed, residing herself once more at her best friend's side. "Khai, look-"
"No!" Khai stood up this time. "I'm not into this right now. I came to you so you could take my mind off this shit and you're just entertaining the thoughts I've been trying to avoid. You know what? I'll see you at the bonfire tonight..."
Before Violet could even process the words, Khai had already tugged the broken glass from her foot and dashed through the front door.
And again, Kahi found herself running from her problems once more. This time, with the song that once met so much to her etched inside her brain.
Oh, my love
A million days in your arms is never too much
