The Beast At Midnight

.02

Eva's POV

The rest of that Friday passed slowly. In French, Harry sat next to me without a word the entire hour.

I always sum people up in my mind to try and get an idea of them, and usually, I'm right.

My thoughts of Harry that day?

I didn't think he was full of himself or a dick because he didn't even greet me or talk to anyone who tried to start a conversation with him, in fact, I thought he was just in his own world; I thought he craved to be left alone with his thoughts.

Like me.

I longed to know his thoughts, he was and still is the only person I've met that's really different from everyone else, different in a good way.

I had 3 classes with him, which was torture. Because I sat alone in all of my classes, and the only open seat was next to me, so Harry was seated with me each time, and not once did he share a word with me. Every time a teacher told him to be seated next to me, he gave me the same gaze. The gaze where his eyes grew wider whenever his eyes locked with mine, the gaze where his eyes pierced into mine. I didn't dare to break his gaze; I longed to make his eye colour known to me. But as soon as he reached me, he broke eye contact.

At break when I went to lunch and met up with Violet, I saw Harry and Zayn sitting together at a table. Soon after they were seated, a petite blonde girl joined them. She kissed Zayn and took a seat on his lap, clearly ignoring the school's rule of 'distance between sex'. As hard as I tried, I couldn't keep my eyes from the curly head male. His back was towards me as he was sat on a chair, but simply looking at him satisfied me in a way I couldn't describe.

After school I decided to visit my favorite place before going home; the forest, of course.

I walked to the waterfall on the small dirt road made between the trees, plants and grass. After about 10 minutes of walking, I reached the small bench next to the waterfall.

I pulled my earphones from my backpack and plugged them into my iPhone before putting the ear pieces into my ears. I went through my playlist from The Scrip and clicked on a song before setting my iPhone on my lap.

As the music started playing, I looked at my surroundings.

The clouds were heavy and the breeze was rough. The smell from the waterfall filled the air, and the picture of the trees shaking from the wind filled my eyes.

As the lyrics started playing in my ears, I closed my eyes and leaned back into the bench.

A few songs played whilst my eyes were closed, when I felt a strange feeling wash over me.

It wasn't a feeling that scared me, but calmed me. I knew I was being watched, and as much as I knew I should have felt terrified at the idea; I didn't. I knew I should have walked back home as soon as the feeling washed over me; but I didn't.

I took my earphones from my ears and rolled them around my iPhone before putting my iPhone back into my backpack next to me.

I slowly opened my eyes, and was met with the view of Harry standing at the other side of the waterfall.

He looked directly at me.

I studied his appearance; it was different from back at school.

Where he had black skinny jeans, a plain white T-Shirt and brown boots on at school; he then had a plain long sleeved black shirt that was rolled up to his elbows, light brown pants and a pair of brown boots on.

He continued looking at me as I studied him and I wanted nothing more than to be met with his presence so that I could study his appearance from near.

I found myself wondering how he knew of my favorite personal spot. No one went there, I still don't think that anyone knows of that place. And it's such a pity, because it is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. I wondered if he lived here before he went to my school, I wondered if he visited this place if he didn't live here, I simply wondered how he would have known of the most beautiful place in this small town.

I slowly stood from the bench and stepped closer. It seemed as if he mirrored my actions because he took a step closer too. We were still separated by 6 meter of waterfall, but I liked the idea of being closer to him, even if just by a few feet.

He ran a hand through his hair, followed by him shaking his head.

He gave me one last look before turning around and disappearing into the forest opposite of me.

I sighed and moved back to the bench to retrieve my backpack. I noticed the clouds that darkened and thought it would be best to leave before the rain came pouring down to earth.

I didn't know what it was about that boy, but something fascinated me. I was yet to be known to his voice, to his thoughts, to his actions, to his heart, to him as person. I wanted, no, needed, to make him known to me.

I begun my walk back home and cursed under my breath as a few drops of rain fell on my face. I wiped them away and continued my walk. Soon, I reached my house and sighed in relieve once I entered the warmth of my house.

Not warmth as in homey and lovely, but warmth as in temperature; thanks to the fireplace we had on almost always.

I walked through the kitchen and living room in search of my mother, but she was no where to be seen, so I lazily made my way to my room.

I threw my bag on my bed once I closed my bedroom's door behind me and walked to my balcony.

My balcony had a roof over it; something that came in handy with the rainy weather in this small town.

I stood at the railing of my balcony and stared down the street; desperate to catch a glimpse of the forest.

I saw my favorite tree and smiled at the sight. Just before I turned around to walk back inside, I saw something running over the street. It wouldn't have caught my attention if it was normal for something to run around in the streets of this town, but we had nothing.

No deer.
No lions or tigers.
No bears.
No wolves.
No monkeys.

Practically, no big animals.

I studied the bushes where I saw the animal run into for a few more minutes, but I saw nothing, so turned around and walked back to my room.

I left my door to the balcony open because I liked feeling the breeze in my room and I also enjoyed the smell of rain filling my room.

I laid down on my bed, and just like any other Friday night; I replayed my life in my mind till I fell asleep.

I was woken by a sound I never heard in this town, a sound I was sure, no one ever heard in this town.

It sounded like a howl of a wolf and the sound left me breathless.

It was a beautiful sound.

I rubbed my eyes and looked at the clock on my bed stand; it read 12:00.

I walked to my balcony; regretting that I had left the door to my balcony open. The coolness of the air made me shiver and I rubbed my arms to keep warm as I walked to the railing of my balcony.

I heard the sound again and gasped, it sounded so near to me. Maybe even a few meters from my front door.

I looked around, but saw nothing. The breeze picked up and the wind blew my hair in my face. I closed my eyes as the howling continued and smiled to the sound.

After the howling stopped for a few minutes, I made my way back to my room and made sure to lock the door to my balcony.

The memories of that day flooded my mind and I smiled at the thought of the howling. I wondered to myself if I would hear it again; if I would get to see the wolf, if that is what the howling came from.

I soon fell asleep with the thoughts of a unknown creature; craving to have an idea of its appearance.

Notes

"Rain came pouring down. When I was drowning, that's when I could finally breathe."
