Chapter 34

Friday

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” Harry kisses my forehead as we walk out of the building. I smile at him as he makes his way back to his group of friends huddled in the back of the parking lot.

“Hey,” Anna and Eleanor greet me as I pass by them while walking to my car. Anna is leaned against the hood of her car while Eleanor is holding onto Louis, the two of them smiling at each other.

“Have you gone shopping yet?” Anna asks me.

“For what?”

“The Halloween party tomorrow night. I thought you were going,” a small crease forms on her forehead.

“Is it a costume party?” I ask, feeling dumb. I really hope it’s not one, otherwise I won’t be going.

“Not really,” Eleanor shrugs.

“I’ll just wear something I already have,” I begin walking towards my car but Anna catches my arm.

“No, you’re coming shopping with Eleanor and I.” The look on her face suggests that this is no time to protest. I sigh and nod, earning a clap from her.

“We’ll pick you up in an hour,” she says and dismisses me to leave. I look at my phone as I walk to my car, it’s almost four. That should be enough time to finish some of the project I was assigned today.

When I get home my mother is lounging on the couch, drinking tea and watching a talk show. She pats the spot next to her when she spots me and turns the volume down.

“How was your weekend? I didn’t get a chance to ask you this morning,” she asks, folding her legs beneath her.

I tell her a lie about how Anna and I went shopping over the weekend and spent the majority of it together. Although her and my father are on the same page about me not speaking to Harry, she’s more lenient about it. I’m sure if I tell her everything including Friday night and the date, she’ll understand that I really do like him. But she’ll just eventually tell my father and we’ll be in the same mess as before.

“That sounds fun,” she says and begins telling me about the conferences in Denver.

Thirty minutes later, I head up to my room and start working on the project that was assigned in Stats. After I finish with about half of it, I jump in the shower and change into a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt to go shopping. By the time I’m finishing putting my hair into a ponytail, I hear Anna’s car horn from the driveway.

“Where are we going?” I ask them as I climb into the backseat.

“There’s a mall in the next town over,” she informs me and starts down the road.

We arrive at the mall about an hour later and head inside. There aren’t as many people as you would think there would be on a Friday afternoon but it’s still packed. We go into the first shop we see and over to one of the dress racks.

“How does this look?” Eleanor comes out of a dressing room in a stunning white dress that stops just below her knees.

“Great,” Anna and I both agree. Eleanor smiles and returns into the fitting room to take off the dress. I walk over to one of the racks as the two of them buy her dress and flip through the various dresses. They’re all either too short or too tight. I picture myself in each one I come across and each one is worse than the last.

“Any luck?” Anna says over my shoulder, walking up beside me.

I shake my head. “These are horrible.”

“Come on, we can find another shop,” she hooks her arm in mine and the three of us walk into another store.

I pick out three dresses that look decent on the rack and head into the dressing room to try them on. The first one, a strapless yellow dress, is too tight and my boobs are practically spilling out of the top. Harry would kill me if I showed up to the Halloween party wearing this.

The second dress is a dark purple one that stops just above my knee. It looks okay but it’s not my style. I put the two I disregarded back on the hangars and turn to the third one. The third is a black flowy dress with long laced sleeves that fits tightly but it still not suffocating. I smooth out the soft material before pulling the curtain back.

“How is this?” I ask the two of them.

“Harry’s going to freak out,” Anna says and her and Eleanor laughs. I feel bad about telling Anna about Harry and I but not Eleanor. I sigh before sitting down beside her, preparing to tell her what’s been bugging me all week.

After I finish telling her, she’s surprisingly calm about. I really hope she doesn’t already know.

“You could tell something was going on between the two of you. Talking to each other when you think no one’s looking, sitting by each other in the cafeteria.” Eleanor winks.

“Please don’t tell anyone,” I tell her, “Not yet, at least. You two are the only one’s who know.” I follow them up to the cash register after changing out of my dress and hand the clerk my credit card.

“I won’t, I promise,” she smiles.

We stay in the mall for another hour before leaving. After texting my mom to tell her that I’ve decided to stay the night will the girls, we celebrate by going to a mexican place downtown. As we’re being seated, my phone buzzes with a text.

Come over

I see Harry’s name above the text and smile.

To: Harry
I can’t. I’m with the girls

“My name’s Lola. Can I start you guys off with some drinks?” A short girl with spiky black hair comes up to the table. We order our drinks and appetizers before the waitress scurries away to go fill in our orders.

From: Harry
Where are you guys? I’ll come over there

To: Harry
We’re eating dinner. I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to come

It’s not that I don’t want Harry here, I just need to spend some much needed time with Eleanor and Anna. I can see Harry now, running his fingers through his hair and trying to think of some way to convince me to come to him. But I’m not budging.

“Jess?” Eleanor’s voice pulls me from my thoughts and I look up from my phone to see the two of them staring at me, small smiles forming on their faces.

“Yeah?”

“You can go to Harry if you want,” Anna smirks.

“No, I was just telling him goodnight.” I tell her and turn my phone off, focusing all of my attention on them.
