Chapter 26

I sigh as the light from the morning sun fills my room, indicating that it's time to get up. I can't stop today from coming, no matter how much I try. I'll just have to deal with what the day will bring, regardless of how much I don't want to.

I take a long shower and take my time getting ready. I grab a dress from my closet but quickly put it back when I realize that I am in no way ready to wear a dress, especially not today. Instead I put on a pair of white jeans and a warm sweater. I stay light on the makeup in case I cry at any time, and head downstairs.

My parents are no where to be found, the exact way that I want them. I don't feel like talking to anyone, nor do I want to. I eat a quiet breakfast and wait until it's almost too late to leave.

The bell rings as I walk in the Chemistry classroom and I can feel every pair of eyes trained on me as I walk to the back. Why shouldn't they look at me, I look horrible.

"Hey," Anna smiles when I take a seat next to her. I try to feign a smile but I just don't have the energy to.

"Hi." I say quietly. She looks at me, confused but doesn't comment on my dreary mood.

Thankfully the class is spent studying for an upcoming test, giving me the perfect time to collect myself. As the class drags on, my mood improves with the help of my friends. I'm still not feeling great, but definitely better.

My feet drag me into French, no matter how much my mind protests. I stop staring at the ground and look up to see if Harry's here. Instead of seeing his usual dark tattoos and clothing, I find the seat next to the window empty. I don't know why I'm not happy. His absence just concludes that this is really over.

"Here you go," Mrs. Greene smiles down at me as she hands a packet of papers to me. I find the energy to smile back before she walks away. Looking down at the papers, I flip through the lot of them to see that this is a fifty question study guide. Great.

The paper keeps me occupied all period and I find myself rereading it just to keep the thoughts about him out of my mind. When the bell rings, instead of putting the study guide into my bag, I carry it with me to lunch just in case things get bad.

After lunch, I walk through the hallway to my locker. My mind is almost completely clear of the damaging thoughts this morning and I feel a lot better. I round the corner of the last building that holds my locker and stop dead in my tracks once I see them.

Positioned perfectly on my locker is Harry and some girl that I've seen a few times around school, kissing against the wall. His tattooed arm snakes around her waist as he pulls her closer, flipping them around to where she's against the cold locker.

All the air is sucked out of my chest. This is no coincidence. As a way to get back to me, he's kissing her on my locker. I let out a strangled sob and cover my mouth quickly to make sure no one's heard me.

When I open my eyes again, I find myself in a bathroom stall, quivering on the ground. I must have ran in here when I saw them together. As I was running away, I was sure that Harry caught sight of me and smiled.

The top of my shirt and the tips of my long sleeved sweater is soaked with tears. There's movement in the stall beside me. I wait until the sound is gone before climbing out of the bathroom. I walk to the streaked mirrors and rest my hands on the sink, trying to catch my breath.

Harry knew what he was doing. It didn't just happen that he and that girl were kissing on my locker. This is the exact thing that Anna warned me of. Harry had the audacity to rub his new girlfriend in my face, making sure that the sight of it unhinged me. And it did.

I look into the mirror and see a girl unrecognizable. What used to be long brown hair is now matted up into a knot, what used to be perfect makeup is smeared with tears. The only thing that looks halfway decent is my clothing, apart from the stains of tears. I start to walk out to get to my class but I stop just short of the door and scold myself. I can't go out there looking like this!

I retrieve my brush out of my bag and pull through the tangles, welcoming the pain that comes with. I pin a strand of hair to the side of my head before turning to my makeup. Taking out my spare bag of mascara, eyeliner, and eye shadow, I reapply more makeup than this morning, sure that all of my tears have been drained. If possible, I look better than I did this morning. But instead of the weight of what was going to happen today, I feel completely better.

My clothes are somewhat dry so I leave them alone. I put everything that I took out back in my bag and sling it over my shoulder. The bell has now rung, signaling that it's time to get to class, and I slowly drag myself towards the door.

Only one thought clouds my mind as I walk back out into the hallway, in hopes of reaching history on time.

Harry was a mistake.
