Chapter 25

"Thank you," I say as I climb out of Anna's car. She winks at me before rolling the window back up and peeling out of the driveway. I turn around and look up at the looming, well lit house in front of me. If things weren't bad enough between my parents and I, I missed dinner and left without their permission.

I quietly open the door and tip toe down the hall, trying to avoid making any sounds. I round the corner just as the sound of footsteps echo throughout the hallway.

"Where were you?" My mother questions me as they come into view. I stop just as my foot steps on the first step and turn around slowly, biting my tongue.

"I was with Anna." I reply.

"Was Harry there?" My dad asks. Him and his pestering questions about Harry.

"No, he wasn't." I reply sharply, continuing up the steps.

"I don't like you going over to people's houses when it's so dark out." My dad calls up after me. I turn around and stare down at the both of them.

"I was just with Anna." I shrug.

"Don't do this again." My dad grumbles and begins walking down the hallway. "Don't forget that your mother and I are going to Denver for the weekend."

"There are some left overs in the fridge if you want some." My mother smiles at me before joining my dad.

I get into my room and lock the door behind me, collapsing on my bed. This day has been the longest and it doesn't feel like any time has passed. I pick up my phone to text Anna but I am met with another screen. Harry's name pops onto the screen, his phone number flashing in the dark room. I sigh and click answer, let's just get this over with.

"Harry, what do you want?" I ask upon answering.

"Some damn answers, Jess." Harry growls into the other line.

"What do you want to know?"

"Why the hell you're ignoring me." He replies.

"It's...It's complicated." I bite my lip, staring at the ceiling.

"What's complicated about it?" He demands.

"Harry, I can't tell you."

"I should've known this wouldn't have worked." He sighs. I can picture him running his fingers through his hair.

"What?"

"You're too stuck up to realize that people actually care for you." He says rudely.

"I am not stuck up." I defend myself.

"You could care less about anyone except yourself and your perfect life." He huffs.

"My life is not perfect."

"Your parents aren't divorced, you're fucking loaded, and you have never had to work a day in your life." He hisses.

"That isn't fair," I point out, trying to contain my temper.

"What isn't fair? You get everything you want and once you're done with something, you move onto the next thing."

"Harry, stop." I plead.

"I guess I'm happy it ended this early." He laughs.

"What?"

"I'm just sorry I ever got involved with you. It was obviously a mistake." His humor feels like a ton of bricks thrown on me, and tears prick my eyes. I let them subside only long enough to respond to Harry.

"Don't bother to talk to me again Harry. You've made it clear how you feel." With that small phrase, I hang up and throw the phone across the bed, another wave of tears coming my way.
