Chapter 16

Crap, crap, crap. I look for some bathroom or janitors closet to run and hide in but there are none in sight. He's getting closer, shoving people who get into his way and sending almost everyone a dirty look.

I shut my locker door and turn to face him, it was going to happen sooner or later. I just wish it was later.

"Jess, thank god you're safe." He says and my jaw drops. That was the last thing I thought was going to come out of his mouth. I expected him to either yell at me or plead for me to listen to him.

"What?" I ask, stunned.

"I stopped by your house and asked your parent's where you were but-"

"You went to my house?" I furrow my eyebrows.

"Last night I went looking for you after... what happened."

"I was fine." Maybe a bit upset but fine nonetheless.

"I just wanted to apologize and-" his nervousness makes me wonder about what to do.

"Save your excuse. I'll get Mrs. Greene to get me a new tutor." I blow off his apology and step around him to head to French. It doesn't make it better that we have the same class but I'm proud of myself for standing up to Harry.

I sit down in my seat and brace myself for Harry to take the one next to me. The tardy bell rings and something shifts inside me when he doesn't appear in class. Although I'm angry at him, I don't want him to go out and do something just because he's mad. I stare at the door as we're instructed to do countless assignments, waiting for it to open and an angry looking Harry to storm in.

Instead, I find nothing.

"How was the study session?" Anna bumps my shoulder and laughs when we make it in the cafeteria. I look around, Harry isn't in here either, and worry starts to fill my mind.

"It was fine." I mutter before telling the lunch lady my number. I follow Anna back to our seats, making sure to check every inch of the cafeteria for Harry. His friends sit in their usual spots, acting as if one of their friends isn't there.

I sigh and sit down. I'm tempted to get out my phone and check on him but hesitate. I'm still mad at him, regardless of my worry, and that would just tell him that he won. I will not let him think he can take advantage of me and get away with it.

"You're looking pale, do you feel alright?" Anna asks when we exit the lunch room. My hand immediately flies to my cheek and the coldness radiates into my fingers.

"I'm just feeling under the weather." I tell her honestly, not daring to mention my time with Harry. Anna is one of my better friends here but I don't want to load all of my problems on her.

"Okay," she winks before disappearing into her classroom. I stop by my locker to grab my stats book before heading to that dreadful class.

I almost choke out a sob when I see Harry sitting in his spot in the back of the classroom. His eyes immediately lock with mine and my eyes find the floor as I hurry to my seat. Throughout the period I expect him to take the seat beside me and try to apologize but the class rolls on without so much as a word from him.

Stop it, Jess. You're supposed to be mad at him, not worrying about whether or not he's going to talk to you. I just need to relax and wait for him to apologize. No big deal.

I rejoice when the bell rings and quickly pack up my things. I run down the front steps and smile when I see the familiar silver paint of my mother's car on the curb. Just as I step onto the sidewalk, a hand encloses around my forearm and pulls me back.

"Do you need a ride home?" Harry asks, no sarcasm in his voice at all.

"I have one, but thank you." I reply sharply and shake my arm loose of his grip. I step forward only to be pulled back again.

"What do you want?" I snap.

"Just get in the car with me." He says lowly.

I roll my eyes. "I have a ride."

"Just get in the god damn car!" He shouts, startling me. I'm glad my mother has her windows rolled up or she would be appalled by his outburst.

"If you stop yelling, I'll go." I challenge. His eyes widen at my response but he nods and waits for me to tell my mother where I'm going.

I walk down the sidewalk towards my mother's car and stop just outside the passenger side door.

The window rolls down and confusion covers her face. "What are you doing?"

"I forgot that Harry said he could take me home today. I'm sorry." I say and smile apologetically.

"That's fine! Tell Harry I said hello!" She beams at me. I smile at her before following Harry to his car.
