When I'm Gone

Three

Louis' POV

Watching Kate is unlike anyone I've ever paid attention to. Eleanor is quiet and sometimes timid when others are around. Sure when were alone she's affectionate and everyone loves her but watching her around other people she gets nervous and she's still like this after three years. She still cares what people say about us, she still gets hurt when people say things, I've tried to help her grow a thick skin but it's just not in her nature. Which is why I love her, she hasn't changed since day one and I'm thankful for some consistency in my life.

But things with Eleanor and I are not the best. The more time we spend apart, the more we argue. She used to be able to come with us on tour but when we went to the Pacific and toured Australia she didn't want to come. She never said why, just that she didn't want to, things have been tough since then. She's more resilient against things, she just doesn't want to do things, I know she gets uncomfortable in certain situations so I don't push it, I just let her make her own decisions and hope time changes her mind.

Kate, on the other hand, just from the small amount of time I've spent with her I've noticed she's not shy at all, shes friendly to everyone, quick with her words, open, and honest. It's almost like a breath of fresh air to be around someone who isn't trying to impress me, by not trying to impress me though, she is.

I let all the breath out of my lungs and disrupt Kate. It was kind of my intention.

“Every thing okay?” She asks.

“Oh, yeah, sorry, I didn't mean to disturb your reading.” Lies. She caught my attention by reading a book. A book.

“It's okay, I've read this book so many times, I know what's happening on like every page.” She folds the page over and puts the book on her tray.

“Why do you read it over and over again?” I don't know a lot of people who read real books anyway, and books over and over again.

“It's stupid really, I just read it because everything's the same, it begins the same, it ends the same, people meet, they fall in love, they argue, they separate, and then they find each other and live happily ever after. Kind of an escape from reality you know?”

“Guess I never thought of it like that.” I haven't at all actually.

“You believe in fate?” She narrows her eyes just slightly and pulls her hair to the side.

“To an extent. I guess. I mean things happen at random, maybe if you meet someone more then once it's fate. Why do you?” I swear every girl believes in fate and destiny.

“Of course. I think everything happens for a reason, I mean life is an endless possibility, every choice you make effects something else that happens so that in turn puts you at the right place at the right time or the wrong place at the wrong time.”

“I see. So is it fate that you and I are sitting next to each other on this flight?” I ask, I don't know why, why am I asking this question to her?

“Well, I guess. I gave up my seat for someone else, you bought an extra seat and offered it to me and here we are.” She shrugs her shoulders and puts her book in her bag. With her words one might think she's flirting with me but I know she's not, I'm a pretty good judge of character and I see she's just being honest.

“Very true. But you know I'm very faithful to Eleanor.” I want to make that clear.

“OH, yes. That's not what I meant by fate, I didn't mean you and I are fated to be together. Please don't assume that. I was just asking the question.” She has wide doe eyes and I realize I've just made things super awkward.

“I'm sorry, I didn't mean to embarrass you, I just wanted to get that across.” Oh God, I just can't shut my mouth.

“Point well taken. I haven't been with anyone since James died anyway, no offense, I'm sure you're fantastic but my focus is on my child, not men.”

“Well this is awkward now.” She busts out laughing and tries to calm herself by covering her mouth with her hand.

“So true!” She says between giggles. “Tic-tack-toe?”

“Game on.” I watch her pull out paper and pens from her magic bag and set up the game.

---------------------------------

So I suck at tic-tack-toe apparently. I won one game out of at least 15 that we played, we moved on to dots, Kate won almost all of those games as well. We watched the terrible in-flight movie, walked up and down the small walk way, played rock, paper, scissors, she showed me terrible magic tricks, talked about music, talked about life. She was so easy to sit with, I've never met anyone I've connected with so quickly. Not even Eleanor.

But I love Eleanor with all my heart.

“Loser! Snap out of it.” I shake my head and look at her.

“Just because you beat me at almost any game we played doesn't mean I'm a loser. Meet me on the pitch and I'll probably kick your ass.” I smirk, I know for a fact she won't know what a pitch is, it's an football phrase and she'll call it soccer.

“Oh, I can beat you on the pitch. I dribble with the best of them.” My mouth all but drops.

“You know what a pitch is?” I ask even though she obviously does.

“Of course. I know what you British people call a soccer field. I used to play in high school.” Of course, she seems to be perfect. Maybe I can hook her up with Harry or Niall. I close my eyes and shake my head, no. “Hey, we're landing soon.”

“I see we are.” We've been following the map channel on the TV's and it looks like we'll be landing within the half hour. “You excited?” I ask.

“Um, I am. Little nervous, this is a new experience and I'll be alone for most of it. But I'm meeting with the real estate agent tomorrow to look at houses and hopefully by the end of next week I'll be a London resident.” She doesn't seem nervous at all, London isn't a small place.

“Hey, you should give me your number, I can be your only friend in London, I know plenty of people to introduce you to.” I suggest but already see her shaking her head.

“I really appreciate it but I think we should leave it up to fate. If the universe wants us to be friends then the universe will have us meet together again.”

“Are you serious?” I'm sure my jaw is dropped. Here I am, world famous pop star offering to be her friend and give her my number and she refuses.

“Yeah, I mean you don't even know my last name so you can just refer to me as the girl you shared a row with on a flight.”

“Okay, I guess. Odd. I don't think I'll ever see you again though.” I tell her honestly, I don't get out much and when I do, it's quick, I don't look around for people.

“Well you never know.” She smiles and buckles her seat belt to prepare for landing.

We walk out on the sky-walk together and through the terminal. People are already stopping me and asking for pictures, it comes with the job I guess.

I turn to Kate before we get to the area to pick up our bags, I know Eleanor will be there and I don't want to make things awkward for us, plus I know Kate has to exchange some money.

“Well, it was nice meeting you Kate, hopefully we meet again.” I tell her.

“I'm sure we will Louis. Thank you for keeping me company.” She opens her arms for an embrace and I accept quickly. I relax immediately in her embrace and rest my head on the crook of her neck breathing in her hair, peppermint.

She pulls away and I'm surprised that I'm a little upset about it.

“Good luck Louis.” She backs a way, blows a kiss at me and she's gone. I catch myself watching her walk away before I snap out of it and go to find Eleanor.
