His Princess

18. Checking Up

I think I cried myself to sleep. Really, I don’t remember. I remember crying, and I remember changing out of my dress and jewelry and makeup, but I don’t remember sleeping.

Either way, I was woken up by the sound of my phone ringing. I had set it on loud and right beside me so that I would hear it if I got a message.

It wasn’t too bad. Only 4:13 in the morning. I planned to get up in a couple of hours anyways.

So, when I read the text from Niall, I felt genuine relief. Glad you landed safely. Though I responded, I didn’t really give him time to get the message because I called him.

“Hello?”

The sound of his alluring and beyond incredible voice melted everything inside of me, and in an instant, it was painfully obvious just how much I already missed him.

His voice was more than alluring, however. He sounded tired, and I absolutely loved that. “Someone sounds sleepy.”

“Yeah, you do,” he agreed, and we kind of laughed about that. “Did I wake you up?”

“I’m fine,” I promised. “How was the flight? Did you sleep at all?”

“Not really,” he said. “Too much on my mind. I’m worried about Theo.”

Of course. On top of having my crap to deal with, he’s got his family stuff and then his professional stuff. We’re not even dating, and I’m making his life significantly harder.

I sighed. “Me too. I really hope he’s okay.”

“Thanks,” he said. “It . . . really does help to hear your voice, you know. It relaxes me. Do you have a Skype?”

“I do. I’ll just text you my name.”

“I’ll call you about nine,” he said. “We’re five hours ahead, so that’ll be about four for you.”

“I’ll be on and waiting,” I said.

He let out a soft sigh. “Harry showed up at the airport and tagged along. It was nice.”

“Sounds like it,” I agreed, but I was probably more excited that I sounded. He needed someone to be there for him, especially after how I viciously ripped his heart out. “I’ve been kinda worried about you.”

“I’ll be fine, Emmit,” he assured me. “I’m just not giving up.”

I began rubbing my hands over my face and put my phone on speaker so I could massage my temples. “Two months? What if I haven’t decided?”

“I’ll still be doing everything I can to convince you,” he said. “Two months, you’ve decided no, I’ll be distantly trying to convince you otherwise. I’m not giving up without a fight.”

This actually made me smile. “I don’t doubt that.”

He let out another sigh. “My dad’s here. I gotta get going. I’ll talk to you later, okay? Get some sleep.”

“You too,” I said. “You need it more than I do.”

“Nah,” he protested, but his sleepy voice was playful. In my mind, I imagined that damned crooked smile on his lips, even if it wasn’t really there. “We both need it equally.”

I couldn’t help but smile. “Alright. Just make sure you get sleep too. I’ll go back to sleep if you promise to sleep.”

“I promise.”
*** Saying goodbye to that boy was so hard to do, but it was a little easier since I didn’t have to look at his face as I did it. The airport . . . that was awful.

Like I promised, I went back to sleep. I prepared myself for another terrible day at school, and that’s what happened. People were still freaking out, especially now that there were pictures of Niall on a date. They never got the girl’s face, but people assumed it was me.

My dismal mood didn’t really help that. I practically had a neon arrow pointing to my head saying, “It was me!”

Sparrow was frustrated with me because it was my fault I was this way. It could all be easy and happy, for a while, and I could give into my heart and to that sexy Irish boy I already cared deeply for. But, that wasn’t good for us both in the long run. I had to sort things out first. Maybe I did think too much about it, but it had to be done.

I continued to text the other four throughout the day as well. I asked Harry how Niall was doing, and he didn’t spare my feelings, which I appreciated. Of course, I felt worse about everything, but like I told Niall, I deserved the pain.

Mika was kind of bummed out, too. That almost got me to call Niall right up and tell him I was in, but my decision couldn’t be based on other people. This was just between Niall and me.

When we got home, we both got right to our homework—as usual. I had my computer on and my Skype pulled up, but I was working on a paper for English. It was just a rough draft, so it didn’t have to be typed or anything yet.

Explain conflict.

Some found this assignment hard, but the only problem I had was not mentioning names and making it completely obvious what I was talking about.

Some people believe that conflict is simply something you can avoid if you try hard enough. They believe that people bring conflict upon themselves, and maybe as a human race, we do. Conflict is a part of life, however. It is our nature. We cannot seem to avoid it.

Conflict is a troubling thing to go through. Sometimes, it can be internal, and reason and logic will tell you that you should do one thing while something else inside of you is telling you to do the exact opposite. This can be in the form of your conscious or simply your brain deciding what your next move in life is going to be. Some say that internal conflict is like a war between your heart and mind. The heart and mind often want two different things. Love and reason are two polar opposite things that cause conflict in humans every day.

It can also be external. There are a variety of external conflicts. Something as simple as a twisted ankle is an external conflict. This is conflicting the way you live your everyday life. External conflicts are conflicts dealt with physically outside of the body, and usually, only time can solve external conflicts.

Some say that external conflicts are easier to settle than internal conflicts, but you cannot deny that conflict is a part of human nature. It is one thing that makes us so much different from other species. We have the ability to face conflict and understand it, even fix it.

My own essay made me realize that there was a correct answer to my problem. I just had to dig in and make sure I picked the right one.

As I was putting my essay in my bag, my computer began ringing that weird way it does when someone calls over Skype.

To say I literally jumped across the room and onto my bed to answer it was not an understatement. I wanted to see his face, and that’s what I saw when I pushed the green answer button.

He was smiling at me, but something seemed different about him than any time I had been around him. His eyes were droopy, and his smile was lopsided.

“Hey there, beautiful.”

“Hi, gorgeous,” I said lightly as I leaned back against my headboard. Since I knew I was going to talk to him today, I made sure I didn’t look like complete crap, so I straightened my hair at least. “How’s everything there?”

“Theo actually came home before I could get here,” he said. “He’s feeling much better after the medicine has gotten in his system, and he’s excited to see Harry and me.”

“That’s really good,” I said, and that made me smile some more. “I guess it’s good you went home then.”

He nodded. “I’ve missed it. There really is no place like home.” Then, he closed his eyes and began smiling brightly. “I found those pictures you took in the restaurant. Made my day, really.”

“I’m glad,” I said. “I was hoping they’d make you smile at least.”

“They did more than that,” he assured me, and suddenly, he began petting the screen. “I wish I could reach through here and touch you. That would be fantastic.”

Suddenly, Harry jumped onto the bed, and he about scared the daylights out of Niall. Harry laughed really hard as Niall jumped across the room and out of the camera view, which he then took over with a smile. “Hey, Emmit!”

I was surprised, but I smiled back and waved. “Hey, Harry.”

“I love Ireland,” he informed me, but he sounded so sleepy. As he kept talking, though, I realized it wasn’t sleep. “Hey! We need to bring you here one day.”

Niall began getting back in position, but he now had to share the camera with a drunk Harry.
And I also realized that there was also a drunk Niall sitting beside a drunk Harry.

I couldn’t help but laugh a little. “Why is that?”

“I think you would be a fun drunk,” he said. “Maybe even a horny one. Niall is. Quite horny, really. It’d be a big party to get you two horny drunks in a room together. No babies, though!”

I was surprised whereas Niall was pushing him off of the bed and saying something about how he was being ridiculous and stupid. “I’ve been told I would be a horny drunk before. A happy horny drunk.”

Niall’s attention suddenly turned back to me. “Really?”

I nodded. “I’ve always been curious, but I’m never gonna get drunk with people I don’t trust—just in case.”

Harry began moving his face closer to and then away from the camera as he laughed, and Niall began cursing at him under his breath. “Would you get drunk with us?”

“Of course I would,” I said. “What’s not to trust with you guys?”

Harry began laughing as he fell back on the bed and stared calling someone. I didn’t know who he was calling, but Niall wasn’t really paying attention and instead smiled at me.

“I’m glad you would trust me.”

“Lou!” Harry exclaimed. “I’ve got something to tell you!”

Niall groaned. “Harry, can you please go away for five minutes? Really?”

Harry began grumbling under his breath about something, but he did what Niall asked. I even heard the door shut, leaving Niall and me alone again.

I found myself trying to rub his face through the screen, just like he had tried a few minutes ago. “I see what you mean about not being able to reach through the cameras.”

He nodded. “Tragic, really.”

And that’s how we talked all night. Liam called me, and Harry came back into the room while on the phone with Louis and Zayn, so we were having one big party, really. It wasn’t quite what
Niall had originally planned, but I think it helped cheer him up some. Things with his family were good, but the murkiness in those usually bright eyes wasn’t hard to figure out. The bitch he wanted to talk to had actually broken his heart.

I had to do something about that, but what?
