For What It's Worth

Ed's POV-

Theee years and here I stand in this airport. Three years of no contact with my younger sister... No she's more than that! She's my best friend. And I left her behind for THREE years... She must he furious.

Remembering when we were little Ruby was always one of the scariest people to see get mad. I had gone into her room to wake her up one morning so I could drag her out into the new fallen snow of the winter. She looked so funny when she slept. Her face was all scrunched up into her pillow and her hair was a raging mess covering her whole face. I laughed slightly from the sight.

Creepikg closer ser I got ready to yell boo in her face and jumped up into the air. Instead of coming back down my head hit something HARD. I fell to the ground with a huge oomph and lots of pain in my head. Something rolled off the little shelf my head had hit and fell to the ground shattering everywhere.

Her eyes bolted open and the piercing blue glowed a deep red in the middle from her hair sparkling off of it. I think that's what made her look scary in every way sometimes... That clear red you saw flash through her eyes especially when she was mad. It made you want to run for cover and the fury that was to follow.

She looked at me still sleep evident in her eyes and then to what lay beside me smashed. Eyes widening she let out an ear piercing scream and ran to the object that now was never again to be fixed. It was a show globe of the Eiffel Tower it looked like... Her dream place.

Crying and picking up the pieces slowly in her hands she whipped her head over to me and screamed "how could you Ed???!" That's what scared me the most. When she called me Ed... I wasn't Ed to her, I was Eddie. "This was from grandmum before she passed away! How could you break it?!" I didn't know it was from her but I felt horrible with guilt and scared all at the same time.

"I-I'm sorry Rubes..." I heard snarl come from the back of her throat. "Don't call me that right now!" I hated when she wouldn't let me call her that... It was like Eddie but for her. Rubes was her nickname for me. "Ruby I'm so very sorry!" She kept shaking her head and crying holding the pieces and picking up new ones and setting them back down as if it were a fragile thing and could break even more by her touch.

"J-just leave. Now Ed..." I knew that was my call and I left the room and not only that.. The house. I ran all the way to town and searched far and low for something exactly like it. Nothing! There was not a single thing even close to the beauty I had broken.

Then one store caught my eyes. It was a simple store of all sorts of little knick-knacks. It was named 'The Little Things.' I had never been in here so I waltzed in praying for something for my sister. The store really did have every little thing. It was fascinating how this cramped old shop held so much and get looked so peculiar as well.

Suddelnly something bright glittered in the corner of my eyes and I turned to see the most gorgeous snow globe I had seen. My sister would love it! There stood the Eiffel Tower in glass but this one was different... Snow was everywhere. And I knew it was perfect. Snow was out favorite and I knew I should get it.

"May I help you young man?" I whipped around to see an old woman coming towards me pushing up her small crooked glasses and brushing the white hair out of her face that had fallen down from her small bun. I nodded politely to the woman and pointed at the item I was interested in, "how much is that?" She looked at me strange and I thought I saw a weird glance in her eyes.

"Nothing." My face turned to shock.. "W-what? You mean it's not for sale?" The woman laughed at me surprise and shook her head, "it's for sale alright but it is nothing for you. You may take it for no charge boy." I stood in wonder at this very wonderful woman and wondered what made her give such an act of kindness. "Thank you! Thank you so much!"

She handed it to me with her delicate hands and said, "be careful with this one. We don't want it to break too." She knew! She must've seen the guilt in my eyes. Instead of asking anything I waved to her goodbye and walked out of the store with my new gift for Ruby.

When I returned home I went to her room and saw her sitting on her bed with the little Eiffel Tower in her hands... All that was left of her snow globe. "Rubes??" I wandered in with my hands behind my back not wanting her to see yet. She glanced up at me and glared with tears still in her eyes.

"What do you want Ed?" I walked forward until I stood right in front of her. "Listen I'm sorry for breaking your snow globe. I just wanted you to come outside with me in the snow and I thought to wake you up... It was on accident. And I know I can't replace grandmum's gift but I got you this as my way of apologizing to you."

Pulling it out from behind my back I heard her gasp and her eyes widen in shock and wonder. She reached forward and took it for my hands turning it in her hands back and forth. "It's beautiful. Thank you! Thank you so much Eddie!" She jumped into my arms careful of the new gift. "I love you Eddie! Thank you so much!"

Now I stood in this huge airport in my hometown for the first time in three years. And not alone. I had brought my best mates I had met while I had begun to write my music. Their a boy band named One Direction. All five mates I have grown close to and they're more like my brothers now. So when I told them I was coming to see my family and I was nervous after all this time they were glad to come with me.

We we walk out together glad to have no paparazzi here and got into a van with all of our stuff. I sat there and couldn't stop bouncing my leg up and down. I was just SO nervous on how they would react seeing my face after all this time.

"Mate, it will be alright. They will be overjoyed to see you home." I turned to my best mate Harry and smiled at him thanking him for his words. "Yeah, they'll love us too!" Turning my head to Louis I laughed at his comment nodding. "I'm sure they will. Especially my sister will love Niall and his thing for food."

Niall perked up up at his name and turned to me. "Food? Where?" We all laughed and I shook my head. "No Niall my sister has a big sweet tooth and LOVES chocolate. She'll bite your hand off if you try to steal it." Niall crossed his arms a little upset there was no good until he spoke up smiling big, "does that mean we can have lots of desserts?!" I nodded my head big and he started cheering as we all watched the crazy lad overjoyed about food.

"So what is this mystery sister's name Ed?" I turned to face the voice looking at Liam. "Her name is Ruby and when you see her you'll find the name fits her quite lovely." Zayn and Louis said at the same time, "awhhhh Ed is blushing." I just laughed knowing I was. When I talked of my sister it made me so very happy and full of love. It has been so long. I wonder how much she has changed .. Probably very successful in dance. And abhor to graduate! Wow!

The car comes to a halt and I know we are here. I can feel the nerves eating away at me. Walking up the steps with the lads right behind me I ring the doorbell as we all wait in silence for the door to open holding one of my dear family members I have missed so much.

A moment later the door swings open revealing my mum. She looks the same as when I left except she has deeper wrinkles, bags under her eyes, a frown on her face and her was are red and puffy from crying. What's the matter? Why has my mum been crying?

"Edward???" She looks shocked and then grabs me into a tight un breakable hug. She begins to rock me back and forth as she cries into me and I didn't know my mother was this sad or broken... I didn't realize she missed me this much.

She pulls back and looks behind me at the other lads for the first time since we got here. "Edward who are these lovely boys?" Her face now hold a bright sincere smile even though her face is still worn out and tired it seems in her demeanor.

"Lads meet my mum. Mum meet One Direction, they're a boy band I met over the years and am close mates with now." She looked overjoyed to see me and them. She ushered us inside out of the chilly air. "Please sit boys! I'll make some tea and sweets. That alright?"

"YES!" They all said... Niall standing and jumping too. Oh Niall... "Mum where is dad?" She returns a moment later handing us all cups and putting the plates down full of delicious sweets. "Oh darling he's at work but he will be thrilled to see you all here!"

It it was silent until she asked the boys to introduce themselves and not be shy. Liam went first being courteous he got up to shake her hand. "My name is Liam Payne the responsible one. " Then Niall with his mouth full, "I'm Niall Horan and I wuv your fwood." We all laughed at him including my mum. "I'm Zayn Malik the shy one they say." He gave her a quick smile and then he got quiet again proving our point. "Louis Tomlinson at your service miss, the jokester of all pranks." He bowed very low looking ridiculous and well tried to hold back laughs. "Lastly I'm Harry Styles." He kissed her hand and we heard Louis mumble, "the flirt."

Harry punched him in the shoulder and sat back down with a very cocky smirk. We talked about all we had done over three years and our relationships and then I talked about how much I missed everyone. Then it hit me... Where is Rubes?

Mum was talking to the boys about something I had done when I was younger but I interrupted her with my question, "mum where is Ruby?" Everything went silent and we all stated at my mum as I saw the smile fade away and tears prick her eyes. I had a feeling something very bad had happened. "Mum?!" I started to get upset.

Liam pushed me to sit down keeping his hand on my shoulder to calm me. "Edward... She's... S-she's..." She was having a hard time speaking and I just couldn't wait any longer. "SHES WHAT MUM?!" Everyone jumped within the room and my mum had tears running down her face. i felt bad for yelling at my my but I needed to know now.

"She's gone." Those words hit home and I was shocked and speechless. Thank god someone else asked what I wanted to. "What do you mean gone Mrs. Sheeran?" It' had come from Louis who now looked pale and serious. It was hard to see such a playful and joyous person lacking such traits.

"She dropped out of uni after Christmas when you didn't come Edward. Then she changed. Met new people and wore different clothing. Always yelled at me and met that horrid boy." At that I stopped her again interrupting, "what boy?!" Her face paled that she had let that slip. "Callum Briggs is his name. He's your age and an awful looking man! He's so very rude but she's still with him."

She he began to cry harder and Zayn walked over putting his arm around her and soothing her so she could continue to speak. Harry put his hand on my other shoulder offering me a tissue. I had begun to cry and I hadn't even noticed. I nodded for her to continue you on.

"She wasn't the same once you left. She was breaking and he wasn't helping." She paused obviously getting to the hard part. "One night she came home and packed up her stuff and walked out with that monster of a man. I could see in her eyes it was because she was afraid not because she wanted to leave. I begged and so did your dad by she left. She even changed her name Edward...." My head whipped up at this.

I couldn't speak so Niall asked in wonder, "what was it?" My mum looked to him then to me. "They call her Col. Because of her middle name Colette but they don't know that's why. She's still here somewhere but I haven't seen her in over a year."

She he was crying hard again and so was i. We comforted one another as we sat there letting it all out. This was my fault. She left because of me... How could I have broken our one promise to one another doing this to her? How could things have gone so wrong for us all?


"We will find her mum." I looked around the room and all the lads nodded their heads. They were going to stay by my side it seems and I appreciated it. She pulled back and whispered, "I know where she is." She told us where and we decided we would go in a hour to the house once my dad got home from work to watch my mum and keep her company.

We we all sat there comforting her and trying to wrap our heads around all this information we had been given. The one thing I had wanted to avoid I made happen. Like that snow globe I shattered her heart into a million pieces. Now I must fix what I have done. And I will.
