The Wrong Woman

21

“No hurry.” I mumbled, trying not to sound irritated. Louis’ eyes looked over my shoulder and I guiltily followed his gaze. I was relieved to see Felicity was long gone, and although Louis looked suspicious, it didn’t seem like he had identified who I was with.

“So what’s the rush then? You almost knocked me over.” Louis said.

“I was trying to see who the creeper was.” I said. “Didn’t realise it was you wondering around.”

“Very funny.” Louis replied sarcastically. “If you must know, I had to go and get Maddie’s present from the car.”

“Oh really?” I asked. “All the cars are parked way over there… what brings you down this way?”

“I smoke.” Louis said without missing a beat. “Was just about to have a cigarette… but you know what? I’ve just changed my mind.”

He looked me up and down with disdain and turned on his heel as he made his way back to the hotel.

“What about Maddie’s present?” I called when I noticed he was empty handed.

“I forgot… we already took it inside.” He said. He turned to leave again and I could not help but call out again.

“Why were you invited anyway? I didn’t know teachers were allowed to fraternise with students.”

“I didn’t know twenty year olds liked to date fifteen year olds.” Louis smirked.

“How do you know-“I automatically started to ask but stopped mid-sentence.

“Maddie and I are friends now. Didn’t you know?” He said amused.

“Does your girlfriend know that?” I swiftly asked.

I didn’t miss him flinch in response , before he turned and left. Satisfied, I stood there and finished the contents of my flask before also making my way back to the party.

My eyes fell on Maddie who was still on the dance floor and I couldn’t help but admire the way she moved her body to the beat. I found myself gravitating to her and before I knew it I had wrapped my arms around her. A surprised look came over her look before she relaxed in my arms with a contented smile.

Sober Harry would have stayed on the edge of the dance floor. Drunk Harry was smack bang in the middle, swaying to the music, trying to keep my balance by holding on to the more coordinated Maddie. I could see her friends staring at us in awe as they whispered to each other. I saw Louis watching with his usual grim expression and finally I caught a glimpse of Campbell and Felicity. He watched sombrely with a protective arm around Felicity who had a blank expression on her face. Our eyes locked for a split second but she was quick to look away. Another song started but I found myself pulling Maddie off the dance floor.

“Are you enjoying the party?” She asked.

“Ohhh yeaah.” I drawled and she laughed at me.

“Are you okay?”

“Uh huh.” I said.

I knew I sounded spaced out, but the vodka, scotch and “fruit” punch had seriously gone to my head.

“Can I open up my present?” She asked.

“Sure.” I said grandly. She took me by the hand and within minutes she had grabbed the gift from a table laden with presents and was pulling me down the hall toward the elevator.

“Where are you taking me?” I asked as she dragged me along. She didn’t answer until we reached a door.

“My Dad booked a room for the night.” She said, swiping a card through the slot. I blinked as I stumbled through the door.

“Are you sure we should be here?” I asked uncertainly.

“Who’s going to catch us?” She replied. Your stalker teacher, I wanted to reply but I kept my mouth shut. I fell back on the bed and leant on my elbows.

“Sooo are you going to open it?” I asked.

She gave a cute smile as she unwrapped the present, discarding the paper on the floor, and letting out a squeal when she opened the box.

“A bracelet?” She said, lifting it out of the tissue paper.

“Kind of.” I said. “For your ankle though.”

“Oh.” She said peering at it curiously before smiling at me again. “Thank you. I love it.”

“Put it on.” I told her, and I watched as she bent over to clasp it over her left ankle, right above her silver high heel.

“What do you think?” She asked twirling around.

“Niiice.” I commented.

“You haven’t said anything about my dress… or the way I look tonight.”

I bit my lip as my eyes scanned her slowly.

“You look lovely.” I said finally.

“Lovely?” Maddie scoffed. I watched as she approached me and stood between my slightly spread legs. “I was hoping to hear sexy or beautiful.”

I paused thoughtfully as I regarded her expectant face.

“You look beautiful.” I said automatically. She looked at me disbelievingly and I raised my hand to her hair, tucking a few strands behind her ear. “Really. You do.”

I watched her pink lips form into a little disappointed pout and I lifted my head to kiss them, tasting her strawberry flavoured lip gloss. She responded eagerly but I tried to slow it down. I was drunk, but not so drunk that I wasn’t going to her get carried away, right here, right now.

She leaned more forward until she was on top of me and I couldn’t support her weight. I fell back onto the bed and then eased back into the kiss. The familiarity of her lips and the way she gently explored my mouth with her tongue made me realise how much I had missed her, but alarm bells were sounding in my head, even with my hazy head.

“Maddie.” I said, gently pushing her arms away. She persevered for a moment but then realised I was being serious. Disappointment flashed in her eyes as I pulled myself up, forcing her off me.

“Not here baby girl.” I told her. “You have a party to enjoy.”

She rolled her eyes and then straightened her dress.

“Why do I get the feeling you’re breaking up with me?” She asked.

I looked at her confused.

“Who said I was?” I said. She lowered her eyes and refused to look at me and I could see her fighting tears. “Hey… hey. Listen to me… I’m not breaking up with you. I can’t even think straight right now… but I’m definitely not breaking up with you. Tonight’s your party so just enjoy it. Okay?”

She considered my words and then nodded sadly. I kissed her cheek before we made our way to the door.

“You go first.” I told her. “I’ll hang out here for ten minutes before I join you.”

Once she was gone, a wave of dizziness hit me. I sat down on the bed and waited a while before making my way back to the party. I paid a visit to the bar first and grabbed another drink, only to hear the first strains of “Happy Birthday” being sung. I made it halfway through and watched as they wheeled in a three tiered pink birthday cake.

Not long after, Campbell herded everyone outside where he presented Maddie with the keys to a white sports car, wrapped neatly in a glittery pink bow. I did a double take before my mouth fell open. A second sports car? Jesus, they must be rich. I frowned for a moment, a niggling feeling suddenly becoming a realisation. Maddie had a car… but she had only been fifteen. How come she was driving? I couldn’t figure it out, so I just stood there and clapped along with everyone else as Maddie excitedly flung her arms around her Dad.

By the time I went inside I had found Zayn again, and even though Maddie and her friends urged me on the dance floor, I refused. Zayn and I ended up downing a few shots at the bar before I lost him again and then before I knew it the party was over and I was sitting listlessly on a chair in the corner of the bar. I could vaguely her Campbell and Maddie talking about me.

“He can’t drive home.” That was Campbell.

“Can I drive him?” That was hopeful Maddie.

“You will not. You can go up to your hotel room right now.” Campbell retorted.

“Well we can’t leave him here!” Maddie cried.

“I can take him home.” Felicity spoke up.

I lifted my head and gave her a cheerful grin which she ignored.

We drove in silence until we reached my apartment. My head was spinning and I had to roll the window down and let the cool breeze hit me in the face.

“We’re here.” Felicity said unnecessarily. She popped the lock on the car but I couldn’t move.

“If you want me to get up those steps, then I’m gonna need your help.” I told her. She heaved a sigh and opened her car door. I stumbled out and leaned on her without asking.

We both struggled up the steps and I tried to unlock the door. After a couple of unsuccessful tries we managed to get in. Felicity turned to leave, but I grabbed her by the arm.

“Don’t go.” I said. “Let’s have a drink.”

“I’m driving.” Felicity pointed out.

“One drink won’t hurt.” I turned to head inside but I felt Felicity’s hand on my arm.

“I think you need to go to bed.”

“Mmm bed.” I murmured, letting her lead me into my bedroom.

Felicity valiantly tried to get me to lie down, but I imprisoned her hands in mine.

“Harry…” She said helplessly.

“Loosen up.” I slurred. My hands ran over her satin dress in a repeat of our earlier encounter.

“You feel so nice.”

“What are you doing?” She asked.

“Nothing.” I said, angling her body so it now pressed against me. It felt good to hold her, even when my vision blurred and I had to shake my head to clear it.

“You’re so fuckable.” I mumbled and her eyes widened in surprise.

“Excuse me?”

“Lovable.” I responded quickly. “So lovable.”

“Harry, you’re so drunk.” Felicity stated, trying not to laugh.

“So lovable. So love me.” I smiled stupidly, “Love me.”

I pulled her as close as I could, until my lips grazed her ear.

“Stay with me.” I whispered.

“Are you crazy?” Felicity said.

She untangled herself from me and it only took a light push for me to fall back onto the bed.

“See you at work Harry.” Felicity called out before she left.

“You’re no fun.” I grumbled with my face half buried in my pillow.

The hangover next morning was monumental and by the afternoon I was still lying in the same position. There was a knock on the door and I slowly hoisted myself up off the bed, not bothering to put my shirt on. I opened the door to see Maddie standing there holding a takeaway coffee.

“Hi.” I said surprised. She rarely just turned up on my doorstep, and usually called before she visited

“Hey.” She said with a smile before walking in. “I thought I’d bring you a little hangover cure.”

I looked down at the coffee and my mouth twitched.

“Er thanks. Coffee huh?”

She handed it to me and I took a quick gulp.

“Let’s see how that works.” I said with a smile as I led her to the couch. “So what brings you here?”

“I wanted to see you.” She said, a vulnerable look crossing her face, as though she thought I was going to send her away. I affectionately caressed her cheek with my hand in response.

“Hey before I forget… what’s with the car?” I asked. “How come you were driving before you were sixteen?”

“Um.” Maddie looked as guilty as I’d ever seen her. “I didn’t have a licence.”

“Are you serious?” I asked. “All that time you were driving without a licence? Does your Dad own the red car?”

She slowly nodded and I raised my eyebrows.

“Did he know you were driving his car?”

She slowly shook her head and this time my eyes widened.

“Holy shit Maddie, what were you thinking?”

Maddie shrugged.

“So hold up.” I said, all these flashbacks flooding my brain. “Your car broke down last month and you said your Dad helped you out. Who helped you and how did your Dad not find out?”

“My Dad has like three cars… he only drives the red one sometimes. He never even noticed.” Maddie paused and then spoke in a rush. “Louis helped me.”

“Louis? Your teacher?” I said shocked.

“Yeah.” She replied nervously. “I couldn’t ask you because well… you didn’t know how old I was. Louis did though.”

“That guy is unbelievable.” I shook my head in amazement. I saw her eyes lower down to my lips and then travel down my torso, and before I knew it, I felt her fingers tracing over my tattoos. She loved the bird tattoo and sure enough when I looked down she was lightly touching it.

You’re unbelievable.” I murmured. It was getting to the point where I felt that I did not even know who she was anymore. What had happened to my little innocent Maddie? As if in answer to my internal question, she leaned forward and kissed my tattoo, her wide blue eyes looking up at me shyly as if she expected me to stop her. All I could do was silently watch her as she swirled her tongue over my inked skin. She climbed onto me, firmly straddled me and took off her tight top off to reveal a cute lacy white bra. My silence spurred her on as her lips met mine, the slow kiss quickly turning fervent as I felt her gently grind against me.

“Oh Maddie.” I mumbled against her long hair which was now tumbling around her. She flicked her hair away and gazed at me intensely before whispering to me.

“Harry, I want you to make love to me.”
