Starting Over

An Uphill Battle

Ch 24: It’s an Uphill Battle but I’ve Got The Lead
Samy’s POV
Why the hell is it so bright in here? I think to myself as my eyes slowly start to open. Steph and Ashly must have forgotten to turn the lights back off after they got ready for class. Typical! My best friends and college roommates Stephanie and Ashly are notorious for forgetting that not all of us share the desire to wake up at 7am. Hopefully Chas or Raven will stop by soon and turn them off again. Chas and Raven live next door to us in the dorms. We’re all best friends. Every morning it’s the same routine, one of them stops by my room with a cup of tea and a muffin to try and bribe me into helping them cram for some exam they forgot they had. For some reason though, this doesn’t feel like a typical college morning. Something feels off. My leg feels like it’s being weighed down by a thousand bricks and the pain is almost unbearable. I keep hearing beeping sounds and quiet talking too. Maybe I’m having some kind of dream.
I forcefully encourage my eyes to open fully and adjust to my surroundings. Tan walls, bright fluorescent overhead lighting, a weird bed… this isn’t my dorm. It takes me another few minutes to realize that I’m in the hospital. I graduated college 4 and a half years ago. I live in Londonnow. Oh my gosh! The people. The crowd. The car! Liam, where’s Liam? I can’t find him! I begin to talk to myself in my head as panic sets in. Am I dead? I honestly feel like I belong in some kind of movie. My leg. What happened to my leg? I throw back the covers to see a full leg-length brace with a few bolts to keep it in place. It’s broken, that’s a given. Will I be able to walk again? Thoughts of the worst case scenario plague my mind until I hear the door to my door slide open and a familiar voice reeling me back into reality. Liam.
“I’m so sorry, Liam, I don’t know what happened. Are you mad at me? How’s El? Did any of the girls get hurt? What about the car driver?” I burst out, half in relief of having answers within my reach and partially out of fear. Fear that he’ll be mad or that our lack of security caused an innocent fan to get hurt.
“Shhhhh. Calm down. It’s ok love, it’s all ok. I’m just so happy that you’re going to be fine” he says. I hadn’t realized it until now but I’ve been crying. “No one got hurt but you. How are you? Are you in pain?” he asks reassuringly. I nod in response, afraid that my voice won’t hold up. “I’ll get the nurse and be right back, ok?” I offers as he rises off the bed and heads towards the door. He exists quickly in search of the nurse and I’m left all to myself. The quiet and eeriness of the room makes me realize the true amount of pain that I’m really in. It’s excruciating.
“Hi Samy, I’m Nicole. I’m glad to see you awake. Do you remember what happened?” the nurse asks as she bounces into the room with a smile. She’s way too perky. Perky people make me nervous.
“I… I got pushed. And I got hit by a car, I think” I answer quietly.
“I see your memory is intact, that’s very good. Very promising. Are you in a lot of pain? Has anyone explained to you the damage done to your leg?” I shake my head no. “I’ll go get the doctor for you and see if he can explain and also prescribe a stronger pain med for you, ok?” She smiles at my caringly and exists the room to find the doctor.
A few moments later the doctor, along with Liam, the nurse, and my parents enter my room again. When did my parents get here? How long was I out for?
“Well hello there, Samantha. I’m Dr. Fontane. The nurse is going to give you something for pain and it should start working within a few moments, ok?” I nod. “Now then, on to the reason for your pain. You torn 3 ligaments and broke 5 bones in your leg when the car ran over your leg. I was able to go in a repair all the damage but, as you can see, you’re going to be in a metal brace with these screws in your leg for another week. After that, I should be able to remove the screws and put you in a full-leg hard cast. These pins and screws are keeping your bones aligned but I’m fairly certain that by next week, they’ll be strong enough to hold their position on their own and they continue to heal. Ok?” I nod again. A week with screws in my leg… disgusting. I look like Frankenstein.
“How long will the rehab be?” I ask the doctor. I’ve been here before. I’ve broken my knee and the rehab was a bitch.
“Probably about a year before you’re back to full-function, but I’m optimistic that you’ll be able to walk again in about 8” he confirms my fears. 8 months. The wedding is in 7. I refuse to be pushed down the aisle in a wheelchair or walk on crutches. I also refuse to change the wedding date. September is perfect. I’m determined to get this rehab moving sooner and get back to being myself.

Notes

Sorry if it's not the best, I worked night shift last night and still haven't been to sleep because the stupid maintenance people in my apartment decided to come rip floors up today, without telling me ahead of time. Fun stuff. So yeah, I'm exhausted. Sorry if it shows in this chapter but I figured I might as well write something if I'm going to be awake.
Thank you all so much for the subscriptions and votes. You rock!

Maybe. I think you did a wonderful job regardless and if I had of known you needed a co-author I would have asked to help. I think your writing is wonderful.

@electrichearts

I honestly didn't know what else to write and I needed a co-owner. I still stand by the ending but I think there could have been a lot more to the story if I had had help.

I just spent the last hour and a half reading through all this! You had me hooked. I can't believe it's over :(
