Chapter Nine

Daphne POV

The sheets felt cool against my skin but the sunlight streaming through the windows did nothing to help my headache. Groaning I stretched my body out to try any wake myself up. On the way down my hand hit skin.
Turning I saw Dustin staring sleepily at me a half smile on his face.
"So you wake me up by hitting me." He joked in his morning voice.
I roll my eyes and get out of bed taking the sheet with me.
"Hey I'm cold." Dustin exclaimed from behind me.
I looked over my shoulder and cocked an eyebrow.
"Too bad it's my sheet." I said. My eyes trailed from his curly hair to his toes and back noting his rather naked body. Dustin pouted at me.
"Fine." I said and threw him the sheet letting the sunlight touch my skin.
I walked towards the closet and didn't even need to look to know Dustin was staring at my bare back.
Throwing on shorts and a tank-top, washing my face and running a brush through my messy hair I sauntered into the living room. Liam sat at the counter shoveling cereal. He looked at me with raised eyebrows.
"Should I expect to see Dustin up anytime soon?" He convicted.
I shrugged my shoulders.
"Why would I know?" I said coyly.
"Don't try that routine I know what happened last night." Liam said annoyed.
"I'm not playing a routine and I know what happened last night and you know what I think I like you better drunk." I announced and whirled on my heel to leave.
I felt Liam grab my arm.
"What did I do to make you not like me?" Liam asked.
I opened my mouth and considered my words carefully.
"It's not that I don't like you it is that you haven't made any effort to see things my way." I said and Liam looked confused.
"Other than clubbing yesterday we have done everything according to what you and Dustin want like you guys forgot to factor me into the equation. I'm not like you guys but I think you've forgotten that." I explained.
Liam looked like I slapped him which I had considered many times.
"How about we go get coffee and we can work this out?" Liam asked.
"Coffee sounds nice." I agreed.
Liam grabbed his wallet and we slipped from the room.
The house was deserted as we walked down the halls.
“Is anybody there?”
We hear from a slightly ajar door. Liam looked at me and put his finger to his lips to tell me to be quiet.
We tiptoed past the door but my feet got tangled together and I slipped forwards. I reached out and grabbed the side table. A vase fell off and started wobbling. Liam and I exchanged a nervous look. For a few nervous moments we stared at the vase swaying back and forth. When it stopped moving we both sighed in relief. Walking as fast as we could without running we made our way outside. When Liam closed the door we ran out the gate not having to worry about echoing footsteps. Once outside the gate I slumped against it beside Liam.
He just looked at me and started laughing. I started giggling as well and we just laughed for a couple of minutes thinking of our near escape.
“So where do you want to go?” Liam asked.
“Um….I think we drove past a small cafe on the corner on our way to the mall.”
“Sounds good to me.” Liam said nodding.
We set out down the narrow road away from the mansion. I kicked up stones along the side of the road.
“So tell me about yourself.” Liam said from beside me.
“Theres not much to tell. My parents are college professors. I’m the oldest of 5 and yeah thats just about that, you?”
“Um… my dad works with airplanes, my mom is a nurse. I have two older sisters so…….”
“So what?” I asked.
“Um I don’t know.” Liam said quietly. “Is is weird that I have a hard time talking to you?”
Liam stopped and turned towards me. “It’s just that with most girls I don’t have to do most of the talking and things seem to flow easily and…..”
“It’s not weird.” I said interrupting him.“Most people say the same thing. Well they don’t actually say it but I can tell.”
“Oh.” Liam said. “Well you were talking a lot last night.”
“So you’re saying I should be in a constant state of drunkenness?” I joked cocking an eyebrow.
“Um no!” Liam exclaimed. “It is just that it didn’t seem hard last night.”
He said smiling. I rolled my eyes and slammed my hip into his. He nudged back and we walked down the road periodically slamming into each other. Finally deciding to end it I body slammed Liam off the road. He grabbed my arm and pulled me with him. We tumbled down the bank on the side of the road and into the mud. I squealed when I felt the mud squish underneath me.
“You didn’t have to pull me in.” I pouted shoving his shoulders into the mud making sure to get it in his hair.
“You pushed me.” Liam defended throwing mud at me where I was perched on top of him. I looked at him with an open mouth shocked. Grabbing a handful of mud I scrambled off of him and threw the mud at him. Liam retaliated and 15 minutes later mud streaked my whole body.
“I don’t think they are going to let us into the cafe now.” Liam said laughing before he fell back into the mud. The mud made a very undignified noise and I burst out laughing.
“I don't think the mud can take your weight and that’s what public bathrooms are for silly.” I told Liam while giggling at him.Liam rolled his eyes and stood up. He offered me his arm.
“Shall we go?” He asked.
“We shall.” I said smiling at him and taking his arm.
“What do you think G.I. Jane?” I asked referring to the mud on my face as we walked towards town. Liam just shook his head and laughed.

“I don't think all the mud came out of my hair.” I complained to Liam stepping out of the bathroom soaking wet. I had tried to get the mud out of my clothes but my white shirt remained an ornery shade of brown.
“I think we need to get you new clothes.” Liam remarked.
I gave Liam a no-duh face. “You think?”
Liam rolled his eyes.
“Wait here for a sec.” He said before running off.
“Liam where are you going?” I yelled at his retreating back as he ran across the park.
He didn’t say anything but raised his arm with his index finger up to say he would only be a minute. I slumped against the wall of the bathroom my wet ringlets around my face. Liam was back 10 minutes later and he held a bag.
“Here.” He said out of breath as he shoved the bag at me. I took it and looked inside. A bright colored sundress stared back at me.
“I could have gone to get my own clothes.” I commented before heading towards the entrance. I looked back over my shoulder before I disappeared. “But thank you.”
Re-appearing in the sundress I took Liam’s arm.
“So coffee?” I said cocking my head and putting the floppy sunhat that was also in the bag. We headed to the small cafe on the corner. Liam sat me at a table and went inside to order. I looked at the square we were sitting on. The clouds moved slowly overhead but there was enough blue in the sky that I knew it wasn’t going to rain. The park sat across from the cafe and looked like a nice place to stroll if I ever had a chance to escape again. Liam returned with the coffee and croissants and set them on the table. He slid in across from me.
“So now that we have escaped do you want to go back after this?” Liam asked.
I looked across the park and shook my head.
“Nope.”
