Forever and Infinity
I Need You
Harry
"Everyday, when I call you and ask you if you want to do something, you say, 'I'm busy.' I know you're with Paisley! What makes her so much more special and why does she deserve your attention?" My girlfriend, Carley yells at me angrily. We've been fighting a lot lately. She claims that I've been giving too much attention to my best friend instead of her.
"She's been going through a lot, Carley," I manage to say.
"And what is that?" I open my mouth to answer, but the problem was, I don't know. I have no
idea why Paisley has been acting so distant and lost.
Carley looks at me expectantly, tapping her foot in the process. "Well?"
"I don't know," I reply.
"If you don't know and she doesn't tell you, you shouldn't care! She's stealing you away from me."
Honestly, Paisley wasn't stealing me away from anyone. I was the one that chose to spend all of my time with her, and she hadn't even asked me too.
"I can't stop caring. She's just as important to me as you are-" maybe even more.
"Your best friend is ruining your relationship with your girlfriend! Doesn't that seem like a problem?"
"Carley, I can't keeping juggling a relationship with you and Paisley."
"Finally, you've gotten some sense knocked into you-"
"Have a nice life, Carley. I've got to go."
"What do you mean-"
"We're done, Carley. I can't choose you because we've been dating for two months. I've been friends with Paisley for as long as I can remember. I'm sorry."
I got in my car and left, watching Carley fade away in my rear view mirror. I wasn't really sorry. In fact, I was kind of glad to be rid of her. It's not that I don't like her, but but my feelings weren't strong at all for her.
▪️
I pulled into the Apartment complex where Paisley lives, and rushed up the stairs. I hadn't been there to see her in two days, and I was hoping that she didn't let herself die.
I approach her door and unlock it with the spare key she gave me months ago, and let myself in. All of the lights were off, and I was a little surprised, because she hardly ever goes out, except for work.
"Paisley," I say, walking down the hallway. I notice there's light coming out from under the bathroom door. I knock on it lightly and say, "Paisley, are you in there?" Nothing is said in return, so I open the door to find Paisley with her head rested on the toilet seat and her arm in her lap, covered in- blood?
I kneel next to her and take her arm, which is covered in cuts, and wrap it in bandaging from under the sink. "Paisley, I know you're awake. Can you please open your eyes for me?"
Her eyes stay closed, but she whispers, "I need you."
My eyes widen, for this is the first thing she has said to me in at least three weeks. "Paisley, why did you do this to yourself?"
"I needed to feel the pain. Take my mind away from...."
"Away from what?" This is what always happens. Every time I get to the part where I want to know what's wrong, she doesn't answer.
I pick her up, carry her out of the bathroom and lay her on the couch and cover her with a large blanket. "I'm going to make some tea, alright?"
She blinks in response.
After I pour two steaming mugs of tea, and give one to Paisley, I look for a movie to watch. Paisley seems to have no interest in anything except for the two floating cubes of sugar in her tea, so I just put in her favorite movie, The Wizard of Oz, to hopefully get a smile out of her.
"Paisley, I really wish that one day, we'd go back to how we used to be. We'd talk nonstop; actually, you did most of the the talking. You'd never even let me finish my stories before you interrupted. What feels so different is that now I'm doing ALL the talking. Remember when we'd go to the old coffee shop by the river and watch the boats go by? I promised I'd take you on a Yacht once; do you still want too?"
She said nothing in response, so I continued. "You listened to me sing every day. I always tell people that I sing for you."
No response.
The movie starts to play, and Paisley seems to finally take her eyes off the now small lumps of sugar, and stares intently at the TV, while I, on the other hand, think nothing of the movie.
Why has this girl, my first and closest best friend, become so distant from me? What have I done?
What is she hiding from me?
