Masked

Defying Social Pyramids

Zayn’s POV
Everyone has suddenly become unusually quiet. I glance over to the bed that Louis is on and see that he is asleep.

“Harry…” I say, pointing to the bed.

Harry does nothing, it is as if oblivion has consumed him.

“Harry!” I say, a little louder this time.

Once again, no response.

“Harry Ed..” I begin to say Harry’s full name when the door opens and Angel enters. I wind up saying, “Harry Angel Clearwater!”

“Good God, Zayn,” Angel says. “Aren’t we confused today?”

“Don’t tease me,” I reply.

“Don’t sass me,” Angel counters.

Harry laughs.

“What’s so funny?” Angel and I ask him.

“Both of you!” Harry says, laughing harder.

“You’re the funny one,” Niall says with an appalled expression on his face. “You talk all garbled to make us all laugh and now that there’s this pretty chic, you talk normal.”

Harry rolls his eyes, facing Niall. “Here’s your answer,” he says, showing Niall the cotton balls.

Niall’s face contorts into an expression of utter disgust while Liam edges towards the door.

“I, uh, really have to go,” he says. “Not go as in urinate, but go as leave.”

“Sure thing, Payne,” Harry says with a slight smirk.

He reaches for the doorknob and opens the door.

“Au revoir, Monsieur,” he says, earning a smile from Liam.

“Prends soin de Louis,” Liam replies, closing the door.

“Je suis impressionné,” Angel says to Harry. “Je ne savais pas que tu pouvais parler Français.”

“Don’t take me for a Frenchman,” Harry replies. “I only know how to say good-bye in French, probably also hello and thank you. But to be quite honest, I have no idea what either you just said or even what Liam said.”

“I said “I’m impressed. I didn’t know you could speak French” and Liam said “Take care of Louis”.”

“Woah, I thought Louis’s name was French for “yes”?!”

“Well, “oui” and “Louis” do sound the same if you talk fast.”

Niall smiles, shaking his head. “Sometimes I think Harry and Angel are cute together,” he tells me.

“I know, right?” I reply. “They have so much in common: they’re both beautiful and sporty, sometimes fierce and sassy, but most of the time, good friends.”

Niall shakes his head again. “But Harry says he’s taken.”

“He always says that.”

“I know Zayn, I know.”

We sit in silence for a while, watching the two converse about the randomest of topics. I look at Niall, then at the sleeping Louis, then back at Niall again.

“Sometimes, I look at the six of us and wonder whether or not popular people and not so popular people are really meant to be torn apart,” I confess. “I mean, Liam’s a nerd, Angel and I are Emo-Goths, you and Harry are jocks and Louis is…”

I stop, unable to pinpoint Louis’ location in the social pyramid of our school.

“None of the above,” Niall says. “Or all of the above. No one can really be sure of where that ball of sunshine belongs.”

“Perhaps Louis has made a social class of his own,” I say, contemplatively. “I mean, he’s obviously sporty. He could join the football team if he wanted to, but his best friend is a nerd who hangs out with Emo-Goths.”

“Maybe social pyramids are just bull,” Niall says. “I mean, look at how close Harry and Louis are and Louis isn’t a football star.”

“I think there are still walls,” I reply. “There are still walls and pyramids… but they can be defied, and I think that’s exactly what Louis did.”

“He’s real, right?”

“Of course he is, Niall.”

“Okay good. That’s good because I don’t want to wake up and realize that one of the best things in my life is a dream. I don’t want to wake up and realize that the social pyramid is still separating all of us.”

“Well even if I wake up in the morning and Louis disappears, at least I know that not all popular kids are meanies who’ll throw me in a dumpster or something.”

“You watch too much Glee!” Niall says, playfully punching me.

“Ow!” I exclaim. “Never mind, I’ll take back what I said.”

“Can’t you take a joke?”

“Can YOU take a joke?” I ask, smiling hugely.

“Sure Zayn, sure,” Niall says, ruffling my hair.

I smile and shake my head, my mood being way to high to yell at Niall for messing with my hair.

“Defying social pyramids,” I think to myself. “I’m beginning to like the sound of this.”

Notes

Defying Gravity got stuck in my head so I wrote a chapter called Defying Social Classes.

Feeling hyper today, might go do another chapter.

Cheers!
