Loud and Clear

Dumb-Lucked

"I'm sorry, but we found someone else for the job." The manager said over the phone. Way to do it, moron. I thought to myself. I sighed heavily, hoping he'd hear it.
"Okay. Thanks." I said, pressing the end button. Thanks for nothing.
“Did you get it?” Someone asked behind me. I turned my head, seeing the familiar golden locks of my best friend, Jack. I turned to face him.
“Nope,” I said with a sigh, “another one bites the dust.”
“Darn. I was looking forward to seeing you in a maid’s outfit.” I punched his stomach, sending him clutching his stomach.
“Doofus.” I muttered, laughing. He finally stood up.
“One, its Spade.” I laughed at his new name-of-the-week.
“Spade? What happened to Dumb Lucked?” I asked. He smiled.
“Dumb lucked...hm. Sounds more like yours.” I threatened to punch him as he ran down the road.
“Fine then, Drink-Dumber!” I yelled back. But he was already out of hearing range. I shook my head, and headed inside. I could instantly smell the alcohol swarmed in the air. I took a deep breath, and then headed inside.I silently tip-toed up the stairs.
"Isabella!" My dad boomed from downstairs. I froze, hoping he'd think he was hallucinating, or pass out. I could hear him muttering to himself downstairs. He's always hallucinating. Thinking he sees someone next to him. He says his name is Greg, or something like that. Hence the reason we live here. My dad used to have a good job. He was a manager of a car dealership. Best in the city. Until, the employers caught him talking to himself. The C.E.O. fired him right then and there. Sent him to a nut house. Spent three days in there. Until they saw that nothing was wrong with him, and sent him back. Either way. I can’t leave. I can’t afford it. I keep trying to get a job, but no one hires people like me, I guess.
"Isabella, I want to speak with you." I turned, but didn't leave the top step. "I have someone I want you to meet." I slowly stepped down, legs quivering. I made it down, miraculously, and walked into the dark living room. I turned to see Dad, clean shaved, hair finally cut, and wearing nice clothing. He looked completely sober, and nice? "Isabella, I want you to meet Dorothy." Okay, Dad must have made a new imaginary friend. Who real human being would come near, well, Dad? I turned my head when I heard footsteps behind me. There was a girl about my age, standing behind me. She had dark red hair, and she looked taller than Dad.
"Uh, Dad. I think she's a bit too young for you." I said. He chuckled. I snapped my head around, not used to his suddenly joyful mood.
"No. That's my daughter." I turned to see a woman with the same shade of red hair as the other girl standing there. She was a little smaller than Dad. She had a warm smile, and her eyes shone through the dark curtains surrounding the house.
"Hello, I'm Dorothy. I'm going to be your new stepmother."
