The Bucket List

Chapter 4

"Harry," I made out that someone uttered as the windows caused me to shut them without a fail. "Wakey, wakey, eggs and bakey," the unnamed voice chimed.

I let out a groan prior to carefully tossing myself to lay my stomach on the cold, tile floor. Did I really fall asleep here? My thoughts felt slow, but bundled up with mystification. What happened last night? Am I in my own house? Do I still have my wallet, keys, and phone? I had so many questions jumping around at once, and I couldn't think straight.

"What do you want?" I questioned before I squeezed my eyes closed tighter as I sensed the reaction of my stomach turning. Guess I had too much to drink last night.

"Dude, we have to clean," another person butted in. It was Niall, I could freely tell through his thick Irish accent that we would all try to mimic, but utterly fail. "Clodagh, is going to be here in an hour and this place looks like..." Niall took a pause before speaking again "Well, It looks like shit. Let’s just put it that way."

I lazily adjusted myself onto my forearms before finally peeling my eyes open and gazing around. I listened to the sound of trash bags being pulled out of the box and whipped in the air. Red solo cups were everywhere, were scattered all across the room, and glow paint was smeared all over the walls, floor and furniture. Hopefully it’s washable.

Just how Niall put it, the place looked like shit. "Why did you have to tell them we are going to clean up this place?" I interrogated Niall before slowly standing up, trying to not lose my balance and to not make any sudden movements because I felt as sick as a dog.

"Because it persuaded her to let us throw this amazing rager in her plaza." Niall stated as he handed me a black, folded up trash bag.

"My cancer was what persuaded her." I corrected him because it was accurate. If we went over there and I was completely healthy, then she would have undoubtedly replied with a no, but she had pity on me, as did everyone else. It was just something I would have to deal with. Sometimes I wish I could find someone who wouldn't. Someone who would treat me like I'm a normal human being and not like a dying, helpless one.

Niall didn't reply back, but it’s not like I expected him to. All he did was bite down on his lower lip, prior to him shooting down empty cans of beer and soda in his trash bag. Every time I would bring up cancer they would all shut up or carefully choose what they would say next, or maybe even sometimes wait until someone else brought up a different subject for us discuss about.

I sluggishly made my way to the bar, which by far was the most destroyed section in the plaza. It had crushed spiked cookies, spilled beer, and many upon many plastic shot glasses all over the table. Guess Niall couldn't handle keeping his section clean, as it was the most occupied. I would know...

As I swiped my arm across the plastic tabletop, making everything fall carelessly into the waste bin that was located at the end of the table, I caught the sound of banging located in the washroom right behind the bar. "The fuck..." I mumbled to myself before placing my hand on the doorknob and twisting it. I bared myself for what could be behind this door (the party was absolutely wicked last night so you never know) before I pushed the door open a tad. The odor that was roaming around this washroom was strong enough to make me feel even more under the weather than I actually was. It was absolutely dreadful.

When the door was finally pushed open entirely the smell got even more insufferable. As I pulled my shirt over my mouth and nose to strive to safeguard the stench away, which was to no aim, I noticed Liam hunched over the toilet seat vomiting up a storm while banging his right hand on the edge of the bathtub. "Liam, Are you okay?" I asked him, it was a stupid question. I knew he wasn’t okay, how could he be? He drank so much last night that there was no possible way he could wake up with an easy hang over, but I have never seen such a cruel one like this.

Liam turned to look at me, his eyes all watery from puking and bags under his brown eyes from not getting enough sleep. "I am never," he took a pause, wondering if he was going to puke up a storm again but continued to talk. "Never...going to drink ever again." He stated.

I let out a remote chuckle, "That's what everyone says," I replied. "It's not that bad."

Liam then looked at me as if I was mad. "I feel like I’m puking out my guts, and I have a migraine," Liam stated, his lip trembling as he was about to cry from the frustration, but he held it together. I guess hangovers get Liam emotional.

"I'm sorry, Man," I muttered before patting his back, but the second I touched him he scooted away, pressing his back against the cold white tub. I didn't take it the wrong way; I don't like being touched when I'm at my worst either. "But Clodagh is going to be here in about an hour, so clean up a bit." I then took the time to look at Liam closely, chuckling at what I realized. "And maybe put some pants on. I don't know, just a suggestion," I smiled before closing the door, leaving Liam and his almost naked self with some alone time.

"Clodagh!" I greeted her with a warm smile as I swung the double doors of the plaza open a tad. She looked a bit startled as she jumped a bit and looked up at me from her phone. She let out a soft chuckle and kindly returned the smile before walking up to me.

"Hello, Harry." she replied, still not losing her smile.

I slightly turned my head to look in the plaza. The lads were running back and forth frantically trying their best to finish picking up what was left of the mess, besides Liam who hugged a pillow while resting on the lounge couch. Niall waved his hands in the air getting my attention before mouthing the words, 'STALL HER'.

When I turned my head back to face Clodagh, I tried my best to give her the most assuring smile I could. "How was the party?" she questioned me as I walked out and closed the doors slowly behind me, trying not to seem suspicious, but the smug look on her face informed me she was onto something.

"Amazing," I nodded before she tried to get past me to open the doors, but I held the doors closed. "I...I just want to thank you again for letting us use the plaza." I said, trying my best to hold her over.

"My pleasure," she replied. "Can we go inside?" she asked before crossing her arms across her chest.

"Yes, of course...” I stated, but I didn't budge.

"Harry, let me into my plaza" She demanded, not giving in.

I then felt the plaza doors being ripped out from my grip as the lads appeared in the doorway with smiles across their faces. "Hello, Clodagh," Louis chimed.

"Morning, Louis," she said, getting a bit suspicious before she glanced over at Liam who is now thankfully completely dressed. "Liam, you don't look alright, Hun. Are you okay?" she asked him.

"Better than ever," he obviously lied. Liam had a look on his face that he could puke up any minute now, but he held it together, taking one for the team. "Just stayed up late, that’s all."

"Oh," she simply said. "How is the plaza? All in one piece I hope," she chuckled before pulling her purse open and tossing her phone in.

"Of course it is! Why wouldn't it be?" Niall replied all too quickly.

"You are teenage boys, only god knows the destruction you five are capable of," she joked.

We all laughed at her remark right before Louis butted in. "Clodagh, we actually have a plane to catch at six a.m., and it’s already 4:53, so you can probably understand that we have to leave right about now," he informed her, which wasn't all a lie because we did have a plane to catch today, but it didn't leave for California until eight a.m.

"Ah, I see," Clodagh nodded before moving out of the way for us to pass. "Well, have a safe flight."

"Thank you. Have a pleasant day!" I thanked her before Louis tugged my arm as the lads followed closely behind us. "What was that?" I spat at him as we walked down the gravel parking lot. "Our plane doesn't fly until eight, why lie?"

"Well, the plaza isn't quite as clean as it should be," Louis spoke before we all reached his car.

"How bad?" I asked as I opened the unlocked door to the passenger seat and hopped in. Louis walked around the car to get into the driver’s seat as Niall and Zayn were in the back hoping Liam wouldn't puke on the way to my flat.

"Let’s just say she shouldn't open up the pantry door," Niall stated before we rapidly drove away from the plaza, and the next task on our list was California.

“I can’t believe my little Harry is going to California all by himself,” my mother teased as she placed my folded shirts at the bottom of my blue suitcase, followed by pairs of jeans.

“Mum, I’m already twenty. I’m an adult, you know? I’m not four anymore running around with my underwear over my head,” I replied, pulling clothes from my dresser and placing them on the bed beside the suitcase for my mother to pack up. My mum insisted on visiting me before I leave for California because ‘you never know what may happen’ as she says.

“I know, I know,” she assured me. “I’m just going to miss you, that’s all,” she said as her lip began to tremble.

I allowed a deep breath to escape my lips before I brought my mother into an embrace. “It’s going to be okay,” I promised her. “I’ll be back before you know it,” I told her, but that didn’t stop her from weeping into my chest. “I’ll Skype you at least once a week.”

She then let out a shaky breath. “Better make that at least once a day, Mister,” she joked, trying to bring up the mood.

“Deal,” I stated before she let go and continued to pack up my things for my flight.

“You do know I’m capable of packing my own things, right?” I said before stacking more clothes on one another.

She let out a remote chuckle. “Yes, I know,” she smiled. “I just like to help.” Which was true, she always helped me with my homework I would bring home from primary school. She would help with my school project and dances. My mum was the best mother you could ask for. I just sometimes wish I was a good enough son to deserve such a heroic mother like her.

As my mother zipped up my suitcase and placed it on the floor with no trouble I could see the hint of worry in her eyes, as if she thinking something may go wrong when I’m away and she would feel guilty for not being there. “Everything is going to be fine, okay? Don’t worry,” I smiled as I rubbed her shoulder, comforting her.

“I’m sure it will,” my mum replied. “Have a safe flight and have fun. I’m going to stay here for a bit and tidy up. You and Niall are animals,” She told me before giving me a tight squeeze, but it was over quicker than it started.

“Oh, you have no idea.” I chuckled.

“Remember our deal,” she reminded me as I rolled my suitcase to my bedroom door and opened it to enter the hallway.

“I will. Love you,” I smiled.

“Love you, too,” she replied before taking a seat on my bed. I flashed her a quick wave before heading to the car that the other lads were waiting for me in. Leaving my mother behind was probably the hardest thing I had to do, but I know I had to do everything on this list. Everything before I’m gone. I just hope I see her one last time before that happens, but I’m sure I will. Hopefully.

“Did you know my father was one of the first people to ever hear Frank Sinatra sing,” an old lady alongside me on the plane rambled. “He also knew his father,” she added.

I just nodded my head, trying to be as polite as I possibly could, but if I’m being honest...this lady won’t shush up. This whole plane ride to California has been nonstop rambling about her life, facts, her father’s life, and how much she loved her cat, Missy, who she had to put down because she was too fat. “Did you know that because Gmail first launched on April 1st of 2004, many people thought it was an April Fools' Day prank?” she informed me. “Can you believe that?” she laughed before turning her head to face the person next to her, thankfully leaving me alone.

“Did you also know that diabetic people have sweet urine? Not lying,” I overheard her say to her next victim.

This plane ride has been an absolute mess so far. Niall argued with the flight attendant for thirty minutes on how the plane food wasn’t good enough. Louis had a kid kicking the back of his chair until he snapped and gave the kid a stern talk, so the flight attendant moved Louis to first class. Lucky bastard. Liam and Zayn seem to be the only one having a normal plane ride. Liam was catching up on his sleep and Zayn was taking pictures of us on the plane when they told us we could. The only grand thing about this ride was that I got the window seat, which is amazing. The view was something I have never witnessed before, and it was astonishing.

“Young man,” I heard the old lady mumble, but it took me a while before I came to the realization that she was talking directly to me. When I turned my head to face her she had a dissimilar expression than before. She became more serious and stern as if what she was about to say was something I needed to listen to and take to heart. “You need to enjoy life,” she began. “You need to explore the world and do things you always wanted to do.” Little did she know I was doing that right now “Because before you know it you will be old and wrinkly like me,” she said with a sigh. She didn’t know that I would never be old and wrinkly like her, that I would never get to the age she is at right now because I’m dying. “But at least you get discounts at places,” she said so nonchalantly It actually made me let out a chuckle.

I sat there looking out the window thinking that I will never be a grandpa, I’ll never have a wife and kids, and I’ll never give my mum the grandchildren she always wanted. I won’t be able to do a lot of things I should be doing, but life isn’t fair. That’s just something else I have to deal with for now.

“Did you know two-thirds of the water used in the average home is used in the bathroom?” the lady asked, interrupting my thoughts. Here we go again…

“This place is huge!” Niall exclaimed as he entered the penthouse my mother’s friend is letting us stay in for the time of us being here.

I dropped my bags on the floor before running to the couch and plopping myself down on it after a long plane ride. “Is this what jet lag feels like?” I questioned before stuffing my face in a pillow.

“I would assume so,” Liam replied before resting on the ottoman located in front of the couch.

“Look at this view!” Louis said before walking onto the bare balcony. I lifted my head up, and I had to admit the view was remarkable. The penthouse was placed right ahead of the beach and the sun was just barley starting to set. You could see surfers gliding along the waves and people laying out on their set up towels with rainbow umbrellas over their heads, protecting them from the sun. “We have to go,” Louis added.

“Now?” I asked before Louis started to frantically nod his head, excited to feel the sand under his feet.

“But we just go here. Plus, we have to unpack-.” Liam started to inform us but Louis quickly cut him off.

“We have the rest of the day to pack. Come on, you know the babes here are going to be fit with their rocking bodies,” Louis teased.

“You have a girlfriend. Remember?” Zayn laughed.

“And so do you,” Louis poorly defended. “Now, are we going or what?”

“Fine,” I said. “But under one condition.” The lads all gave me a look as if what was about to come out of my mouth was going to cure cancer. “I call dibs first,” I joked.

“Sounds like plan,” Niall chimed in. “But what if the babe isn’t into you?” he asked out of curiosity.

“Then you can get my sloppy seconds,” I smiled and made everyone break into laughter.

“So like always, I'll be your wingman,” Louis said as we all started to head to the elevator that would lead us down to the lobby. When the words ‘wingman’ left Louis mouth it brought me right back to the night I offered to be Ada’s wingman, the night of the accident, because she wanted to impress the boy she dressed up for. I probably will never know who the boy was, but I don’t want to. He is probably hurting more than me right now, if that’s even possible.

“Yeah, sure,” I said to Louis right after the bell of the elevator rang to inform us we have reached the lobby.

As we made our way out the grand hotel I couldn’t stop thinking of how I had forgotten about Ada. How could I do that? This whole day she didn’t even cross my mind once until something reminded me of her. Is that all she was? A reminder that my life was a living hell from now on? That I wouldn’t be able to see the one person I needed to see every day? I can only hallucinate about her and when she disappears it hurts like hell, but I’m beginning to get used to that feeling about now.

A car that honked at us while we crossed the street to reach the beach knocked me back to reality. The reality that now felt like I was forgetting about my best friend, my other half, and I was doing all these tasks to deal with it, to deal with losing her.

I felt my shoes sink into the warm sand as we all walked down to the water. The crystal blue water waved and crashed onto the shore. The sun began to set and the people got quieter, as if everyone was only here to watch the sun rest. It felt so peaceful, and passive, but the sound of a girl squealing interrupted the serene tone of the beach.

I tossed my head to where the sound came from and my eyes landed on a group of two guys and three girls messing around in the sand. They were building sand piles, not sandcastles, but just piles of sand. Two of the girls lay down on their pink beach towels as they watched the sunset. One girl had blonde hair with blue ends at the bottom, but the other girl had beautiful brown hair that faded into a golden blonde. She had a nice tan, that reminded me of Ada’s and her body wasn’t bad whatsoever. She had on an aqua two-piece swimsuit that wasn’t nearly as slutty as her other friend who looked like she was barley wearing any clothes. She looked amazing.

I nudged Niall’s shoulder pulling his attention to me. “Hmm?” he hummed.“She that girl over there?” I asked as I nonchalantly pointed at the brown haired beauty that laid peacefully on the sand. Niall began to nod his head before I spoke out once again. “Dibs.”
