In His Arms, I Am [On Hold]

Prologue

September 2010

Dahlia Evans had been basking in the warm Spanish sun on her chaise lounge at the beautiful Marbella Beach for only a few hours before her life would change forever.

Dahlia, along with her mother Rebecca and father Joseph, was vacationing in Spain before her junior year of high school began. Dahlia would have been fine with a trip to Maine or somewhere much closer, but her parents insisted on traveling abroad to the beautiful European country. It was just across the Atlantic Ocean from New York, where Dahlia resided in The Hamptons, but it seemed like a new world.

She had only been there for two days when she met him. He and his friends were also at the beach while she was trying to catch a tan. Dahlia was initially furious when a soccer ball came rolling her way and knocked over her strawberry smoothie, but when the owner of the ball came over to apologize, she couldn’t even remember why she was mad in the first place.

He was tall, but not too tall, with light brown hair, a beautiful smile and a wonderful body. Dahlia had a hard time keeping her mouth closed. He was hot. She also swooned inwardly when he spoke in a clear British accent.

And then, he offered to buy her another drink. Hot and a gentleman?Dahlia was already falling in love.

“I’m Dahlia,” she introduced herself to the boy with a bright smile as they walked to the beach bar where he was going to replace her spilt smoothie.

“Louis,” he replied. “Sorry about the drink, love. My mates aren’t as good at football as me,” he teased.

Dahlia giggled like a schoolgirl.

The attraction to Dahlia for Louis was mutual. Louis knew Niall purposefully kicked the ball too far so that he would have to talk to the fit girl sun bathing in her black bikini, and he would have to thank him later for that.

Louis and Dahlia sat together and sipped on their drinks and began talking. At first it was just a friendly conversation, each one questioning the other about their home countries and what not, but then they begin to go further. Dahlia was surprised at how long they had stayed on that beach talking. She had told him more about herself than her best friends back home even knew.

Louis was also amazed at how freely their new friendship was. It only took a few hours before he felt like they’d known each other a lifetime.

He was shamelessly crushing on the American Girl, and Dahlia returned the feelings.

Once the sun had begun to set, Dahlia’s mother texted her saying she needed to return to their hotel room so they could go out to dinner. Each of the teenager’s were disappointed that their time was coming to an end, but Dahlia surprised Louis and herself by giving him her number, telling him to text her.

And of course, he had done just that.

Harry had been hanging back at the house while the other lads where at the beach and didn’t believe Louis had made friends with a fit American girl, so he dared him to invite her to dinner tomorrow.

Louis was feeling so good after his day with Dahlia, that he did just that. He was an even happier lad once she replied minutes later accepting the invitation.

Dahlia was going to meet the boys. Louis hadn’t even thought of how she’d react when she found out who they were. Did she know already that they were competing on the X Factor? Would she be intimidated when she found out if she hadn't known already?

Dahlia, on the other hand, was bouncing off the walls of her hotel room. She had such a big crush on the Brit that she was already stressing about what she’d wear tomorrow when she met his friends. What would they think of her? She sighed. Why had she agreed? She hardly even knows this guy!

Dahlia had no idea who Louis really was, or how she would react when she met his friends. And not because they were a band on a popular TV show.

The next day Dahlia was supposed to go out and explore the sights of Spain with her parents, but she had been so anxious for tonight that she faked sick, so they went on without her. Then, she worked up the courage to text Louis and ask him if he wanted to hang out alone before they went to dinner. She squealed in delight once he replied saying to meet her on the beach in twenty minutes.

Best. Vacation. Ever, Dahlia thought to herself. She couldn’t wait to get back to The Hamptoms and dish all of this to her best friend Evelyn.

Louis was waiting for her on the beach ten minutes before he told her to meet him there. He was too excited to sit in his room, and the lads were pestering him, so he left. He couldn’t wait to spend the day with Dahlia. There was something about her that Louis was completely infatuated with. She understood him like no one else could, and vice versa. It was by some miracle that the pair met.

By the time the two made it to the restaurant where they’d be meeting Louis’ bandmates for dinner, Dahlia was head over heals for this guy. They had gotten to know each even more. Dahlia discovered Louis was 18, just two years older than her, but neither one of them cared much about the age difference. Louis even kissed her on the lips to prove it. He was hopelessly in love, too.

“Lads, this is my Dahlia,” Louis announced to Zayn, Niall, Harry and Liam.

My Dahlia, he had called her.Yep. She was in love.

All of the boys shouted their “hi’s,” but Dahlia took her time to say it to each of them. She shook each of their hands, trying to commit each of their names to memory. If these were Louis’ best friends, she couldn’t confuse them.

Niall, the Irish blonde one.
Zayn, dark hair.
Liam had the same name as one of Dahlia’s friend back home, so that was easy to remember.

And Harry. How could Dahlia forget him?

Dahlia’s throat went dry and her palms began to sweat when she finally noticed the tall, curly haired boy. Holy hell, she thought. She felt guilty for the thoughts she was having, but she couldn’t deny the surge of electricity that coursed through her body just by making eye contact with him.

He was beautiful.

Harry’s thoughts we’re almost identical. He still didn’t even believe Louis had actually met a girl until she was standing in front of him.

Long, wavy brown hair. Big brown eyes. Tall and fit, but not too skinny. Only a touch of makeup—thank God. And a modest yet entirely too sexy dress. She was perfect, Harry thought. She couldn’t be real, let alone Louis’ girl.

Fuck, Harry thought. He'd have already started hitting on her if Louis wasn’t his mate. They were just becoming good friends since they’d been put together in the band, and he wasn’t about to fuck it up for some girl. Hell, she could be a bitch for all he knew. No girl that beautiful could be nice on top of that. Right?

When she extended her small, soft hand to Harry, and Harry took it in his own larger one and looked her in the eyes, he already felt himself getting hard. If he wasn’t touching her right now, he’d have to believe she was an angel or something.

Dahlia forced herself to let go of Harry’s hand when he held it a little longer than the other guys had, although she didn’t want to. There was something about him.

Once everyone sat around the table and the guys began to get rowdy per usual, Dahlia couldn’t stop herself from looking in Harry’s direction. Of course, harry couldn’t help himself either, so their eyes had met more than once. Thankfully, Louis didn’t notice.

The conversation centered around Dahlia, as the guys were genuinely curious about the American. She told them her age and how she was still in high school. She explained that she loved photography and fashion modeling.

Of course she loves modeling, Harry thought to himself. She’s got the perfect fucking face and body to be one.

Harry had to remind himself he’d only known her for a couple of hours by the time dinner was over, because he had become attracted to her, and not only physically. He tried to convince himself that he shouldn’t be jealous, it’s not like it’ll work out for Louis anyway. They live in two different countries. It’s practically impossible.

Louis hadn’t even thought of that. He was so wrapped up in the moment with Dahlia that it never crossed his mind. He still had to tell her about the band… He knew this was too good to last.

Later that night, Louis had to break it to Dahlia that it was the lads’ last day in Spain. She was sad, but not for the reason Louis thought. Dahlia found herself more upset that she wouldn’t get to know Harry more rather than missing Louis… Oh man. Good thing she’d probably never see them again after they left.

Dahlia and Louis had spent the remainder of the night alone walking along the beach. Dahlia had tried to push her intrusive thoughts of Harry aside and focus on Louis their last night together. Louis was growing increasingly nervous as the night went on… he didn’t want to leave her for one, and he didn’t know how to break it to her who he truly was.

Once he finally told her, she was surprised, but thought it was cool. She’d never met anyone even close to being famous, and she loved that he sang. Wait, that means Harry sings too, she thought guiltily. Dahlia had a thing for guys who could sing.

Louis was relieved at her reaction. He loved that she treated him like anyone else, unlike his new fans, whom although he adored, were a little crazy (putting it lightly).

Louis sang to Dahlia while they sat on the beach together, and Dahlia began to forget about Harry. Louis was perfect, and she didn’t want to ruin her night thinking about a guy who probably didn’t even notice her like she had noticed him.

Dahlia even found herself dreading their split more and more. He had to go back to London, and she’d be alone again. She was convinced to make it work though. Louis was the best thing that had ever happened to her. Yes, Dahlia was privileged growing up in The Hamptons, but her parents only cared about wealth and status, often forgetting they even had a daughter. Dahlia never had a boyfriend or someone who cared about her as much as Louis had, and she was in love with being loved.

Louis and Dahlia had continued to text and Skype regularly once they went back to their homes after Spain. They considered themselves a ‘couple,’ but it was hard on the both of them. They missed each other, but loved each other too much to break up. They were determined to make it work.

Dahlia had even applied to universities in England in hopes that they could be closer. So the day she was accepted to Cambridge, there was no doubt in what she would do.

Now, where most parents would probably have some reservations about sending their child away to a new country on their own, Dahlia’s parents saw it as a wonderful opportunity for her. Dahlia couldn’t be more happy to reunite with Louis once and for all.

Louis and Dahlia loved each other, and were determined to make their relationship work while she was in school and he was off doing his thing in the hottest boy band in the world. They were happy to be together again, and nothing would break them apart.

As for Harry goes, he wasn’t so happy. Harry would never admit it to anyone, but he had a crush on his best mate's girl. But Louis was too good of a friend to betray, so Harry would just have to watch from the sidelines. He’d never get to hold or kiss Dahlia like Louis had, so he settled on being her friend. Dahlia would become close with all of the guys over the years, but Dahlia, too, was undeniably attracted to Harry, and that brought them closer. They were always teasing each other and picking fun. It was almost torture for the each of them; being so close but never going all the way, but they’d have to endure it.
