Jealousy
I couldn’t believe it. Luke had extended his contract with Gabrielle. And to be honest, it hurt me much more than it should have. Calum also hurt me. He kept it from me for almost two weeks. I only found out because it came up in conversation with Chantelle and me yesterday. I was verging on furious and I have no idea why. Chantelle claimed that it was because I was in love with Luke but that is totally untrue, I don’t even like him more than a friend and he likes Gabrielle so whoopee doo for all of us.
“Lily could you just let me in, you need to tell me what’s wrong, we can talk about this, work out whatever problem there is.”
“I told you to go away Calum.”
“Well can you at least talk to someone, who do you want to talk to?”
I didn’t respond getting out of my desk chair and face planting my bed.
“Billy please.”
“I’ll talk to Michael.” There was a pause before Calum spluttered out a surprised ‘what?’ “Michael, I’ll only talk to Michael. Can you call him and make sure he doesn’t bring Danielle.”
It wasn’t long before another knock was heard at my door. “Lily, it’s me, Michael. Can you let me in?” I slipped the lock and quickly pulled him into the room not before sending a quick glare to Calum. “What’s up?”
“Life, everything is up.” He continued to ask me why I wasn’t talking to Calum. “He kept me from the truth, I don’t appreciate that. As my boyfriend he should tell me things that are happening in our group, especially if it’s something vital to our relationship. I don’t understand why he would tell me about how Luke extended his relationship with the devil.” Michael’s face screwed up.
“I didn’t know that either,” oh. “Why is that vital to your relationship with Calum?” I shrugged as Michael lay down on my bed, patting the spot next to him for me to join him. “You look like shit, by the way. Did you sleep at all last night?” I shook my head. “This is really getting to you isn’t it. Just try and forget about it at the moment. You can sleep if you want or I can tell Calum to leave and we can go out and do something.” But in that moment I couldn’t even tell him what I wanted to do, I felt too comfortable in Mikey’s arms and I was quickly in dreamland.
I woke up disorientated, I was alone in my bed but apart from that everything was the same. I heard a door slam causing me to sit up and push my hair away from my face. What the hell was going on? The door to my room slowly and cautiously opened and Mikey poked his head through the doorway.
“Oh, you’re awake. Calum just left, he needed some air or some crap.” I raised my eyebrows at him but let it go, knowing that if Mikey had gotten involved, it was best not to know. “What do you want to do?”
*****
We had ended up at the park, I don’t know how we ended up here or why we came here in the first place but here we are. At the moment we were hogging the swings, not that there were many kids here in the first place but still. It’s always been an escape from reality to be on a swing, it’s just something I’ve always enjoyed doing.
“How’s Dani?” I asked Michael to break the silence.
“She’s fine, I don’t really know but that’s what I would assume.” My head whipped in his direction.
“What do you mean you don’t know? You guys are barely ever apart.”
“I know, it’s just, I’m not sure. I don’t feel like we’re going anywhere. It’s like we’re on a roundabout with no exit. There’s no direction to our relationship and so I haven’t been spending as much time around her as I usually do.” I frowned at him, yeah she may have not been the best fish in the sea for him but they always looked really happy. “It’s okay, I always knew we had an expiry date. It’ll just depend on how long we can actually last after it. Let’s not dwell on it though, let’s go get some ice-cream.”
We walked across the road to the ice-cream parlour, both of us in our own thoughts. Mikey’s thinking about ending it with Danielle. I definitely didn’t see that one coming. I really should pay more attention to what’s happening around me and not just myself, I’ve always been really good at it but now I’ve had some of my own issues I’ve been too blinded to see other things crumble around me. I’m a really shit friend.
We ordered our ice-cream and took a seat at a nearby booth. “Are you okay with it all though, she’s been a big part in your life for a while now?”
“Yeah, well I think I’m fine.”
“There’s something you’re not telling me, you can tell me you know, if you want. I won’t tell the other boys.”
“I think she’s seeing someone else.” That little bitch. “It’s okay though.”
“Mikey… it’s really not. Come here,” I pulled him into a slightly awkward hug cause of the booth and he buried his head in my neck. I took the opportunity to glance around the almost empty shop until I heard the tinkle of the bell, signalling someone had arrived. “You have got to be kidding me.” He hummed in confusion, pulling away from me. I cocked my head to the side in their direction and Mike threw his head back in the seat.
“You’re right, you’ve got to be kidding. Do you want to just leave, we can just walk and talk. I don’t mind, I know you don’t want to have to deal with them.”
“Thank you.” I whispered as we slid from the booth.
“Lily, hi.” I really hate that girl. “Oh Michael, I didn’t see you there, hello. Do you want to join us?” Gabrielle asked a little too kindly gesturing to her, Luke and Calum, the latter two I was refusing to make eye contact with.
“We would really love to but we actually have to be somewhere right now, maybe next time.” Mikey shrugged off nonchalantly.
“Oh come on, just ten minutes.” I rolled my eyes at her whiny tone and just walked out of the parlour. The cool breeze hit me and my hair flew out behind me. I heard the chime on the door of the shop ring and I cursed under my breath and prayed that it was Mike.
“Lily, wait up.” I also really hate Luke at the moment, did I forget to tell you?
“What Luke? What the fuck do you want?” I cried, tears brimming, threatening to run down my face.
“Shit,” he cursed as he observed me. “Why did you leave?”
“Didn’t you hear Michael, or are you all as deaf and stupid as each other.” He gave me a confused and shocked Luke. For god’s sake can you just fuck off and leave me alone?” Luke had moved progressively closer as I stepped away from him, and I found myself backed into the wall again.
“Because you’re my friend, what’s wrong Lily. What did I do that’s hurt you so bad?” He asked in despair and I rolled my eyes and avoided eye contact. “Lily, look at me. I need to know what’s going on.” He took a gentle hold of my chin and I sighed, staring blankly at him.
“You can’t be serious Luke, you extended your contract with that bitch, you know the one you supposedly hate.” He cringed and ran a hand through his previously perfectly quiffed hair. “And you know when I find out, huh? Two weeks, that’s how long. It came up in conversation with Chantelle. I didn’t hear it from you or my boyfriend or any of my other really close friends, but from Chantelle who I’ve only been developing a friendship with recently. Do you know how much that hurts Luke? No you don’t.”
“Think about how I felt walking in on you and Calum in bed together, in a fucking relationship. Where the hell did that come from?”
“You’re my friend, you have a girlfriend. Why would it bother you?”
“Why did me extending my contract with Gabrielle bother you?”
“Because you didn’t fucking tell me, I care about you Luke, I like to know about what’s happening in your life. Why did you feel it was right to keep me in the dark for so long?” I had dramatically reduced the volume of my voice and hurt was evident in my tone. I really just wanted to break down and cry. “Why do we always end up in these positions?”
“Because we care about each other, we wouldn’t fight if we didn’t.” I leant forward and into Luke as we wrapped our arms around each other. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you, I didn’t really want to extend the contract truth be known, your boyfriend kind of pressured me into it. It was a rash decision. I didn’t think it would affect you this much, not knowing, I just want to get through these next few months with Gabrielle as fast as possible.”
“Do I need to kill Calum for you?
“Nah, you love him too much.” I tensed at that word. No way in hell do I love Calum, only as a friend. Yeah, because you’re in love with Luke. I squeezed my eyes shut and covered my ears with my hands, trying to block out my thoughts. Luke’s hands wrapped around my wrists and he pried them away from my head. “Are you okay?” he asked quietly as he took a step away from me to observe me.
“Over-active imagination, sorry.” I grinned shyly before he ruffled my hair.
“Are you going to come back inside or what?” I shook my head.
“I actually need to get home and clean up a bit and do some other stuff that I’ve been ignoring the past few days, especially while Calum’s occupied because he just gets in my way sometimes. Have fun though, enjoy your ice-cream.” I smiled, nudging him in the side. “I’ll see you soon no doubt.” He pulled me into a quick hug before we said our goodbyes and I was on my way home.
Maybe Luke is a really good guy, maybe we have some kind of a chance.
I was brought from my thoughts as my phone buzzed in my pocket.
Luke: you’re cute when you’re jealous ;)
I change my mind, he is a dead man.
