Gone
Sixty-Two
I stabbed a piece of chicken with my fork and popped it in my mouth, chewing slowly. I wasn't hungry. I just couldn't shake the disturbing thought of what Amber and Josh could be getting up to, not that I cared of course. He could do whatever the hell he wanted. It honestly didn't bother me. I mean, there was a slim chance that it was a totally different situation, that she was genuinely asking him to do her a favour. As I said, slim.
The silence at the table grew more uncomfortable by the second. I stared at the not one, but two empty chairs. Apparently Dad had flown down to New South Wales for a work meeting and wouldn't be back until early tomorrow morning.
"So," Mum finally spoke, her eyes on her empty plate, "where's Josh tonight?"
I shrugged. Just because I thought I knew what was going on, it didn't mean I was right. It was just so hard to stop myself from jumping to conclusions.
"No clue at all?"
No good would come of me telling her what I knew. It was better this way, for everyone. So, I didn't lie, I just avoided the question by answering it indirectly. I was good at that.
"Well, we don't really talk,"
She frowned as if she didn't know whether or not to believe me.
I was surprised she hadn't asked me why Amber hadn't come over in like forever. I'd kept her in the dark as much as I could but she was pretty savvy. It wouldn't be long before she'd figure it out. When that day came, she'd interrogate me with questions and wouldn't let me leave the room until I had answered every single one of them. It'd happened to me before but I had lied my way out of it. The next time, I wouldn't be so lucky. She definitely wasn't easily fooled and it didn't help that I was a rubbish liar.
"Rightio," she said, hopping up from her seat, "I can't wait for you to finish your dinner if you're going to eat like a turtle,"
I stared down at the food on my plate as my stomach growled. Not from hunger though. I threw out the rest and perched on the edge of the couch, positioning myself so that I was facing the door. I was hoping, waiting for him to burst through the door at any moment. But that moment never came.
