"I have a bad feeling I'm right," I said.
"Hang on a second," she frowned, "what makes you think that?"
I didn't want to tell her but I had already told her the secret so I figured there was no point in lying. She would probably find out sooner or later anyway. Besides, it was better she heard it from me than Josh.
"Don't hate me, please don't hate me. I was very drunk and probably very vulnerable. Josh...took advantage of me," I said, absolutely mortified.
Saying it out loud made it sound even worse than it did in my head. The expression on her face changed drastically as she sat up.
"Okay, now I know you can't be pregnant,"
"You're just trying to reassure me,"
"No," she argued, "I'm serious, it's impossible, you can't be pregnant,
Now I was very confused. What did she mean I couldn't be pregnant. How did she know anyway?
"Amber?" I groaned, "What haven't you told me?"
She lay back down and cupped her hands over her eyes to shield her face from the large purple and green lantern dangling directly above her on the ceiling.
"Well," she said hesitantly, "I remember that night very clearly and I'm sure I saw him with that girl from our Maths class the whole night. I forgot her name. You know the one. Tall, blonde, blue eyes,"
Gee, that narrowed it down to half our grade. I didn't know whether or not she was telling the truth. I mean, I wanted to believe her, I wanted it to be true but it just didn't make sense to me.
We were interrupted before I could over think it too much. We both looked over at Josh as he leant against my doorway. He seemed oddly distraught. Oh great, speak of the devil, I thought to myself.
"You okay now?" He asked sincerely.
I didn't really know what to say to that so I just shrugged.
"Been better," I added, staring at the ground.
"Ah," he then turned to Amber, "a word, in the hallway, now," he said.
She had already gotten up off my bed and was halfway across my room when I glanced back over at her again.
"Won't be long," she muttered sheepishly.
She closed the door over slightly on her way out.
Their voices were muffled at first but it wasn't long before the low hum turned into yelling. They grew louder and louder. I decided to give in to my temptation and listen in. I mean, they could be talking about me. Slowly, I got up, tip-toed over to my door, and pressed my ear up against it, hoping for both of their sakes that it had nothing to do with me or the party on Friday.
"You should tell her," Josh said, "Kaia deserves to know,"
He had lowered his voice again. What hadn't they told me?
"I've already told her you were with someone else that night though. Pretty sure she bought it," Amber replied.
I swear my heart leapt out of my chest. I couldn't believe she had lied to me. My best friend, the only one person I could trust, had lied to me.
