Midnight Calling

Disconnect (short)

CHARLIE'S POV

"You mean they're fucking related?"

My heart had skipped a thousand beats as my mind tried to catch up with everything that had been mentioned and brought up: the hunting trips Ian had gone on with my father, how he was conveniently the one there for my mother to cry on once daddy dearest had died, Ruby knowing just a little too much about family ties, how she and Bella had been best friends prior to all this going on and well, just happened to be at the right place and the right time - all the time, her control over the boys information, my mother disappearing from the hospital - I just had to figure out now where I stood. The drive back to Louis' had been one I wasn't keen on staying silent for but I knew to bite my tongue. It would be better than any other option I could have played out. A quick goodbye to Harry in the driveway and Louis spent the better half of the last 15 minutes trying to convince me to stay the night.

"I can't Bella's here and..."
"Bella's what?"

I turned to look over my shoulder and noticed her catching us off guard. I sighed, dropped my shoulders and let my eyes hit the ground; fingers pushing into the pockets of my jeans.

"You probably want alone time with Louis.. I mean, you know..", I stuttered, "I'd hate it if my boyfriend was spending time with another girl."

Her smile was warm, yet I knew not to trust her. Within seconds her arms were around me and I could tell whether my body wanted to freak out, readjust, drop down or stay still. Her hands running over my shoulders and her eyes, tracing my face he mimicked my earlier sigh and said some words I thought I'd never hear.

"Your mom's waiting for you at home."

A simple nod and more hassle for Louis was enough to end the day. Another down and just 3 more to go - I still had an assignment which was due tomorrow I hadn't started on. Without goodbyes said or tears shed; I walked the short stroll back to my home and hid myself in the bedroom not bothering to check the house; dresser again, blocking the door. The sounds of coughs, footsteps and classical music being played off the turn table downstairs let me know that I wasn't alone, although alone was the closest I'd felt to company for days.

"Charlie.."

I could hear Ian's voice clearly as he knocked on my door. I declined to refuse his hospitality although I wanted to so badly.

"Dinners ready.."

Why on earth was he being so nice?

"I'm not hungry."
"Your mother's waiting downstairs for you."
"Tell her not to bother."

The gentle tapping of something, one or another I couldn't quite put my finger on was sending chills up and down my spine and well before I knew it, Ian had left the door. Walking over and looking through the cracks I'd gotten so use to for many years before, I could make out an almost empty hallway with a black figure which looked like they were hanging from the ceiling. A bright flash shone down the white painted and strangely scented walkway. Pizza? Perfume? Petrol? Whatever it was, it wasn't at all appetizing.

Heading back to my computer and opening up a new word document I began trying to type my essay out for, well.. whatever it was based on. I couldn't quite help but feel the need to find out what that flash was for. Why it had been so bright. Much like a camera flash although I couldn't hear anything when it had occurred. Signing onto messenger, I double clicked Chloe's window and typed away.

CocktailCharlie: Meet at the library tonight at 11?
Chloeeeee: 11? What's this for? A study session? And where have you been lately?
CocktailCharlie: I'll explain when I see you, just, be there.
Chloeeeee: You owe me big time Charl!

I know I did.

Reading the clock as 10.16; I went to ajar my window only as much as I needed and packed a small bag with a uniform for tomorrow, my cell phone, a toothbrush and notepad plus pen. Bare essentials and basic equipment. Making sure I made no noise during my escape, I was caught off guard by another flash coming through the bathroom window as I shimmed through my own towards the oaktree which stood tall beside the house. Letting go and falling to the ground completely ungracefully, I once again, as always - started running. Running faster than ever before.

Feet tapping against the ground and eyes on no prize but my own freedom, I could hear my cell ringing like crazy as I made it too the library. Round the back and towards the night entrance, I wasn't watching my back when I felt an arm wrap around my waist and a hand swindle it's way over my mouth. Fighting like a madwoman to get out of grip, I was coaxed with a shhh, before being spun around to face...

"Liam?", I let out breathy, a little shocked that he'd just turned up out of nowhere.
"Chloe said you'd be..."
"Where is she?", I cut him off, now concerned for her safety. How did he always manage to just pop up in the nick of time?
"Just.. come with me."
"No."
"Charlie, don't argue. You're coming, now--."

The walk to his car I'd completely missed in the parking lot and the drive to the cemetery was enough to warrant my freaking out nature. Cool pools of sweat trickled from my temples and the chill in the air made me nip at any breeze which came by. Hopping out of the car and following Liam a good few steps back, I heard a voice of calmness and reconcile in Chloe as she popped out from behind some trees.

"Way to take your time!", I cursed at Liam, hitting him across the chest in a playful gesture which I could only register as well.. 'flirty' perhaps. The two of them came on either side of me and led me through to my fathers tombstone; one place, I could have walked to in my sleep.

"Now.. please don't start screaming..", Chloe begged, her eyes I could feel trace over me.
"And no running away", Liam added as they dropped their grip on me and I saw 3 new headstones which hadn't been here earlier in the week.

Mara Fleming 09/04/1967 - and todays post date.
Charlie Fleming 05/09/1992 - post marked 3 days from now.

Then, as if almost expected - my cell began to violently shake inside my bag. Throwing it down on the ground and ripping through zips and pockets to find it stashed somewhere between a uniformed shirt and my notebooks; I looked at the screen noticing Harry’s number and a few missed calls I hadn’t of felt.

“Hello?”, I asked a little shaky. I could see my hands trembling beside me and reached out to Chloe to have her grab hold of them.
“Charlie.. where are you?”, Harry asked requesting information immediately. I could tell by his voice that the reason he had called wasn’t good.
“With Liam and Chloe.. why?”, I choked.
“Is she with them?”, I could hear Louis ask in the background, fret in his voice and a shallow gulp coming from Harry as another dial tone came through.
“Hang on, I need to answer this”, I explained to him placing the boys on hold as I answered the next call.

“Who is it?”, Chloe whispered, adjusting her glasses. I shook my head and heard a giggle, I hadn’t heard in years.

“Ru..Ruby..?”, I stuttered.
“Nice try little Fleming”, the voice spoke…

“Let me tell a story, about life just passing by - I’ve changed my mind now, you’ve only got one night until you die.”
