With Great Power

The start of a new life

Elsa’s POV

“Where were you last night?” the woman asked, glaring at me.
“Right here, in bed.” I said, unmoving.
“You know that’s not what I mean!” her shrill voice pierced my ears and I couldn’t help but lose my calm.
“I was at school, you know, where there’s no YOU!” I jumped out of my bed and stormed towards my bathroom. She just stayed silent, shocked. She took a deep breath.
“Apologize, now.” Apologize, is she fucking serious? I wouldn’t apologize to her if she threatened to disown me! I slowly walked out of the bathroom. I looked at my feet, as I began to use my eyes to meet hers, faking my shame, I smiled
“No.” We were a mere metre apart and she lifted her arm to slap me across the face, but I stepped back. The force of her arm made her fall forwards and she hit her wrist on the end of my bed. She screamed as I heard a crack.
“Look what you’ve done now, look what you’ve done,” she shouted, “You Shit!” Part of me felt like I should’ve felt bad, but I didn’t, her pain made me smile. I’d read stories about people whose hatred make them crazy, but that couldn’t have been me. My anger was justified. The man came into my room, looking shocked, tailing him was Sandra.
“Daddy, what does shit mean?”
“Get her out of here!” the woman screamed, her eyes bloodshot and her teeth bearing. She ran at me with her good arm and I dodged out of the way. I turned to see if she’d fallen into anything else that she could blame me for, only to be disappointed. Before I could cause any more trouble, I ran out of my room and down the stairs. As I left the door, I looked back to see the woman glaring at me from the top of the stairs. I had no idea where I was going, but it felt good.

I ran for almost an hour, I was in the middle of a field and could see trees ahead. My chest was aching like three tonnes of brick had just landed on it. Okay, once I reached the trees I could rest. My head fell backwards as my back hit the tree trunk. I wrapped my arms around my knees and smiled. For the first time in years, I was free, and I didn’t care about school or my future, I was NEVER going back. I looked up, barely catching my breath, and saw an old house. It was small, the walls were falling down in places and it was overgrown with mold and plants. I extended my hearing, it was the boy and girl from the day before at school. I could recognize their voices as if I’d known them my whole life.
“Don’t worry, I’ll get you out of here.” The boy said. I heard a new voice,
“So I guess I’m not needed then.” I stood up and hid behind a tree as he left the building.
“Wait,” said the girl, “you can’t just leave!” The boy stopped, half way out of the doorway. I placed my hand on the tree, hoping that he wouldn’t see me.
“I can do whatever I want,” he laughed, “since when were you in charge of me?”
“You know what I can do,” she ordered him to stay, “you have to swear on everything you value, that you won’t tell anyone!”
“I swear,” he smiled, “but it’s not me you should worry about.” Shit, he was pointing at me. I turned to run before…
“I know who you are! And I’ll tell them everything; you’ll have to go back!” The boy shouted. I stopped dead in my tracks, fuck! How did he know, never mind. I turned to face him. He gestured for me to go towards him. I did as I was told, I didn’t care who they were, they’d have to be better than my fake parents.
“Hi, I’m Niall, this is Zayn, and this is Philly.” The boy smiled, it was unnerving to say the least.
“Elsa.” I stayed emotionless. If there was anything I knew about being outnumbered it was to never appear weak.
“Well, glad that settles everything,” Zayn hit Niall’s back and began to walk away, “I’ll be off, if you don’t mind.” Philly stopped him as he tried to walk past her.
“You haven’t sworn secrecy!” Zayn rolled his eyes.
“Yeah, yeah, just, tell me what to say.” She ordered us both to promise that we would never tell anyone about the secrets we learnt that day. In turn she promised that if we broke our promise, she would reveal all or darkest secrets.
“You don’t know my darkest secrets, smiled Zayn.”
“Correction,” smiled Niall, “I know more than your sister does.” Suddenly, the smile was wiped off Zayn’s face and I couldn’t help but laugh. We were dismissed and Zayn left first, looking irritated. As I walked away, Niall stopped me.
“Hey, d’you need a place to stay?” I looked at him shocked, “I think you’ve guessed my ability by now,” he smiled, “I think you’d be better with us than where you were planning on going.” I hesitated, before nodding. He seemed nice, and the park wasn’t known for its safety. I figured that I’d be better off with a stranger than a bunch of strangers, an if things got strange, I’d run. I was getting used to running by now.

Harry’s POV

I was taking a bath, I’d been getting more and more stressed ever since the day before when that girl had seen me in the alley. I’ve been heard before, but people always assume it’s their own imagination. What if I was losing my ability, or girls were evolving new eyes to see me. Okay, that second one was stupid, but still. I was half way through a thought when I heard a knock on the door.
“Harry, hurry up!” It was my sister Lilliana. She was just over 9 months younger than me, so we were in the same year at school, but I still think that she should treat me like I’m older, because I am. We might as well be twins at school, except that we hate each other.
“I know you want to look good for the next guy you’re having a sex date with, but I’m busy!” I laughed as she exclaimed her disgust and walked away. We were close when we were kids. We both had abilities, at least, she had the nerve to call her an ability. She’s always been able to seduce any man, as long as they’re not her relation, to do anything she wants. This, has made her possibly the most popular girl in the school. My ability, is more for hiding in the shadows. Except I wasn’t sure I could do that anymore. Okay, it was possible I freaked her out. For all she knew I could’ve been trying to rape her or something. But I just thought she looked so alone. I knew that if I tried to approach her normally, she’d never talk to me. I thought she might be homeless or something so thought I should get a closer look. If she was then, maybe I could help. If not, then she’d be fine. But I couldn’t exactly go and ask her, could I?

I got out of the bath and dried off, before wrapping my towel around me and walking to my bedroom. Lilliana was on the phone.
“Don’t say that,” she laughed, “just do this for me, please.” She effortlessly spoke to him. It wasn’t even very convincing. I walked up to her door and shouted in,
“You know she won’t actually fuck you.”
“Fuck off Harry!” she shouted. I crossed the hallway, laughing. I put on my underwear, ready for bed and heard a scream coming from my sister’s room. I ran across to see if she was alright, shit! I ran to her side, she was unconscious on the floor, all the colour had drained from her face. I looked at her phone by her side just as the ‘blocked number’ hung up the phone. Whoever did this, was going to pay!
