Chapter 3:

(Sophie’s POV)
After finishing, Louis took a huge breath, then continued, “We weren’t expecting a fan to answer the door, so it was sort of strange when-”

“Two beautiful girls invited us into their house!” Zayn finished for Louis, effectively making Jo practially melt in her seat.

Maybe it was just the fact that I could sense a huge mess in their story or that I knew this might become a big deal, but I felt really uncomfortable about this whole situation. This could really get at least a few of us in major trouble and would probably end up requiring some sort of effort on my part.

They were strangers. How could I trust them?

Niall had been on the phone for the last few minutes, probably with their agent or something.

He extended it towards me and, now thoroughly annoyed, I ripped it from his hand, but instantly felt bad after. Damn. Why was I in such a snit?

My eyes inadvertently traveled to Harry who was still pouting.

“Well boys, Simon’s mad at us, but I guess we did a good job. Gladdis just posted something rather nasty on her blog,” Niall chuckled while saying this. “Something about being frustrated.”

“Touching story,” I put all of the sarcasm possible into my voice. They needed to leave before they woke up my grandma. “Now can you get out of my house?”

“Don’t be rude,” Jo came over to me with a big, fake smile and grabbed my shoulders from behind.

“Um, since we’re speaking of leaving,” a loud clap of thunder momentarily interrupted Liam, “do you know anywhere that we can stay the night?”

“Of course we do!” Jo answered before I could, again. “There’s a guest house out back. There’s no kitchen but there’s a bathroom and two bedrooms and a couch-”

“And this is my house,” I mocked her tone. The boys sat there awkwardly as Jo stared at me, until Louis and Harry began poking each other and then started a full on poke war. Seeing as they were occupied, Jo gave me several, pleading looks.

Oh not the face…

“Fine,” I gave in, unable to resist her sad eyes, and stood up, “Guest house is this way.”

By this time it was about twelve o’clock and I was tired and NOT in the mood for this. We picked our way through the garden and into the small, separate house. The walkway was protected from the sheets of rain by a wooden covering.

“You can settle sleeping arrangements amongst yourselves, but there ARE some rules,” I made sure each of them were listening before continuing, “Rule number one: You have to be quiet. Rule number two: stay here. I repeat, stay HERE until I come and get you in the morning. Which leads me to Rule number three: my grandmother can’t know I’ve let you stay. Understand?”

They all responded with a “yes” or something like it.

“Your track record isn’t helping you at all,” I narrowed my eyes, feeling more like I had shot someone than letting five boys stay the night.

Gosh I could get in so much trouble for this.

“And if you break ONE rule, I swear I will call the press on you.”

My threats didn’t seem to faze anyone, for they all started goofing off again within the minute.

Sighing, realizing my attempts at controlling them were futile, my eyes drifted to find Harry- "EYES, HARRY!" I gasped, pulling my arms up to my chest. Flustered, I addressed the rest of them, “I'm tired so...goodnight.” I slammed the door to the guest house and walked into the garden. It was only drizzling now. Halfway back, I heard the sound of a door creak open, just slightly louder than the patter of water.

“Sophie?”

At first, my heart jumped into my throat. Would Harry really try this again? Wait, no. Harry wasn’t the one with the Irish accent.

I turned around and saw Niall’s head sticking out, the line of light illuminating the gravel pathway and the ferns beside it.

“What?” I asked, a bit more hostile than intended.

“It’s not like I know you that well or anything, but are you alright?” he walked out until he stood a few feet away. I picked up the string that held my robe around my waist and started wrapping it around my finger. Why was he so concerned about me? It made me a bit frustrated, but he did bring up a good point.

Why was I being so aggressive? It’s not like any of them deserved it, save Harry. I didn’t feel like delving into my inner conscience at the moment, so I replied with a simple, “yeah, I’m fine.”

I turned around and began walking back to the house when he jogged forward, putting his hand on my shoulder and stopping me.

“Sophie, that’s the biggest lie any girl ever says,” Niall looked at me with questioning eyes.

“Let go,” I ordered, and his hand fell from my arm. I went straight up to my room and didn’t wait for Jo to come back before I drifted off to sleep.

The next morning I woke up and found Jo sleeping in the bed across the room. She wore a slight smile on her face and I didn’t know why until I remembered what little secret was being kept in the guest house out back.

I jumped out of bed and into a pair of jean shorts and a light, short sleeved shirt. No matter how much it rained the day before in California, it was hot during the summer.

I was still a good deal tired, but when I saw the clock read 7:00 am, I ran into the back yard as quietly as my hurried pace allowed. My bare feet stung as they shifted over the gravel. It still smelled like rain when I reached the door and opened it, bracing myself for what I might find.

Luckily, there was nothing TOO bad. In the front room, Zayn had passed out on the couch and was shirtless, which kind of bothered me. However, I quickly realized that, compared to other guys, it wasn’t that bad.

I walked over to him and threw a pillow that had ended up on the ground into his chest, “Wake up.”

He snorted, but didn’t respond. I tried to wake him up a few times, but was unsuccessful. I knew where I was defeated and maybe getting the other boys up first would help my chances of getting them out of house before my grandma noticed.

Going over to the first room, I passed the bathroom that was adjacent to it and, once again, braced myself. There, I found Liam and Niall asleep. Liam was covered up by several blankets and Niall was asleep on a chair in the corner of the room, fully clothed.

I went over to the latter, not wanting to even imagine what I might possibly encounter by waking up Liam first. For all I knew I could be ‘unwrapping an unpleasant present.’ “Niall,” I whispered. No response. “Niall,” I said again, this time a bit louder. No response. I was about to shake him awake when he shifted.

It scared the shit out of me so I backed away and thought I might try waking up Louis. I didn’t dislike him too much. Now casually going about the guest house, knowing I couldn’t wake up these boys for anything, I swung open the door into the next room, forgetting to brace myself.

The first thing I spotted was Louis with the covers wrapped around him and then Harry-

“Thigh!” I all but shouted as I backed out of the room, my hands covering my eyes, “That was a thigh!” I closed the door behind me and shivers went up my spine. Seeing a guy like Harry more than half naked wouldn’t have bothered most girls, but it irked me. IRKED me.

I sped out of the guest house resolving that I would go back later, maybe around…say afternoonish to kick them out and be done with them forever. The mental image of Harry snuck back into my mind, making me gag as I walked back up to my room.

Flopping onto my bed, faced down, I sighed. Maybe this was all a dream.

I felt someone poking my shoulder. Lifting my head, I found Jo awake and dressed, standing above me. I must have fallen asleep again. I looked at the clock: 10:00 am. I shot up.

Oh no. “Jo!” I shouted as I looked down at my dressed self, “How long have you been awake?”

“Oh, I just woke up like five minutes ago. You were dressed so I thought you were up too and just faking it-”

Not a dream.

“We need to go, now!” I pulled her down the hall and towards the stairs where I met my grandmother, who had a rather curious looking smile on her face.

“Good morning sweetheart!” she cooed, “Those boys downstairs are really nice, are they friends of yours?”
