Lizzie's POV

The sunlight somehow made its way through the blinds of the window, I fluttered my eyelashes to find that the girl I share a room with had left already. After letting out a small yawn I slid off my bottom bunk, standing on my tiptoes I looked over the bed above mine.

Empty.

All that had been left was messy bedsheets and several piles of clothes, I roll my eyes and crouch down to pull open the bottom drawer of my wardrobe.

I changed into some faded black (slightly jack-up) leggings and a denim shirt, nothing special. I pull myself up and head out to the long hallway when I hear voices coming closer.

"Tom told me that Miss Hale said they're adopting." A girly voice spoke cheerfully, I watched as the door to the playroom opened.

"I doubt it, probably a charity." Another voice mumbled, two girls joined me in the hall but stayed in their conversation "Plus, Tom is a liar."

"Who's adopting?" I tap the girls shoulder, she spun around.

"Oh, it's just you Liz." She rolled her eyes "You made me jump."

"Sorry... I just -- Who's adopting?" She sent me a scowl and folded her arms over her chest.

"Stop eavesdropping Elisabeth!" Se flicked her hair as she turned on her heel and stomped away with the other girl. I shrugged to myself and continued with my path to the kitchen.

The dining room was filled with chatter as all the other children scrambled to get some food from the table, but I didn't bother and just walked into the next room.

"Yes, well the-- Oh hi Lizzie!" Miss Hale sang, tapping the stool next to her "Come sit down, have you eaten?" I shook my head in reply, aware that we weren't alone "Oh, Elisabeth, this is Mr. Cowell."

"Hi." I peeped, he began staring.

Uh, why is he looking at me like that?

"She's exactly what we're looking for." He smiled and rubbed his chin "She's the one." He confirms.

"Oh. Well you, er. You'll need to wait in order to receive and sign a--" She stuttered.

"No, I want her A.S.A.P! I'll sign the papers." He dismissed her with a simple yet stern nod and stood to his feet, I looked back and forth at them.

What's going on?

"Oh. I, um... Come this way, I guess." She blinked several times and led him away and out of the room.

I'm definitely confused, did I do something wrong? No, I just said hello, I barely said anything!

It was too much for a seven year old to handle, no scratch that; It'd be too much for anyone to handle, all she wanted was some Lucky Charms...

a few hours later


The two adults re-entered the kitchen, the man was holding an old case of mine and Miss Hale was smiling at me sympathetically. She kneeled in front of the stool which I sat and rubbed my arm back and forth.

"Lizzie, Mr. Cowell is taking you home." She bit her lip "He's adopting you dear." She explained, my belly dropped into oblivion within seconds.

"But-- but... I don't understand. Were am I going?" I whispered.

"London." Mr. Cowell spoke, phone to his ear, and motioned for me to follow him. I shuffled quickly behind him, submissively, as he led me outside and in front of a black, expensive-looking car.

"Bye sweet." Miss Hale called from the doors, I looked back and waved before the man helped me in and closed the car door.

Did Miss Hale mean that this man was adopting me permanently?

I'd barely awaken and I had already been dragged out of the one and only place I'd ever lived in and considered home. I hardly remember why I became an orphan but Miss Hale said my Mother was a princess and knew I'd like it better there. I know Miss Hale lied - I didn't believe a word of it - but she was the closest I had to a real mum so why would I make her feel sorry for me? I guess I grew used to the fact of having no Mother or Father, I guess the other orphans were my family?

The car slowly drove away, I placed my hand in the window and watched as the old, torn building grew smaller and smaller.
