Perfectly Entwined

ten!

“Hi, Nell,” Mage said sweetly. So sweetly, in fact, that it made Penelope suspicious.

“What is it?” She asked timidly, already knowing that she was going to ask for a favor.

There was a hesitation in her voice, “Listen, I know you’re really excited about your date with Harry tonight, but I thought I’d give it a shot. I have to work late and--”

“Look I’m sorry, but I am 3000 percent not cancelling my date. I can’t. Harry’s going to be leaving in a week and a half.”

“I know that and I wouldn’t ask you if it wasn’t my last resort. Amy, Charlie’s other sitter, she’s already watching for someone and Anthony called me telling me he had to work late, but l have to work late as well and we don’t trust anyone else to be with her all evening.”

“Mage,” Penelope sighed feeling defeated. “I really, deeply, with everything inside of me, do not want to cancel this date. Are you sure there isn’t anything else you could do? I could drop her off at Casey’s house and she and Hadley can have a slumber party.”

“Nell, it’s a school night.” She laughed and then there was silence on her end of the line for a moment. “Maybe… you could take Charlotte with you on the date.”

“’On the date’?”

“Well, yeah. I mean Harry seems like a really nice guy, he’d probably understand. And it would be much better than you not going on a date at all… or me having to leave work and risk getting fired.”

Penelope laughed at the last comment, “I guess I’ll call Harry and ask him if he’s alright with it.”

“Oh, thank you so much, Nelly!” Mage gushed. “You could bring Harry to the house if you’d like. I mean obviously he’ll behave himself. And you guys can make out or whatever it is you do when Charlie goes to sleep.”

“Mage! Please, stop!” Penelope protested, her face flushed dark red.

“I’m just saying, you know. I get it. You’re young, it’s cute.” She laughed, feeling her sister in law’s embarrassment through the phone.

“Okay, I’m hanging up, Mage.

“Alright,” she giggled. “Tell Charlie that we love her loads when you see her.”

“I will, I love you. Bye.”

“Love you, Nell.”

Penelope shot an exasperated look up to her ceiling, “Lord, why did this have to happen today?” She stared at her phone for a second before sighing and pressing the call button by Harry’s name. There were three rings.

“Nelly!” Harry sounded really excited. That was good. She hoped he would stay that way. “I literally just got off the phone with Niall before you called.” He laughed. “What’s up?”

“I kind of need to ask you a favor and if you want to say no, that’s fine. I’ll just figure something out.” She felt like she should test the water before jumping in.

Harry sounded slightly worried now, “Sure, yeah what is it?”

“Oh, no. It’s nothing serious. It’s just that my brother and his wife are working late tonight and they can’t find anyone to watch Charlie. So I was wondering if you would mind if she came with us on the date.” She continued hastily. “But if you had something planned or wanted us to be alone, that’s fine.”

“Babe, relax,” He laughed at how stressed out she sounded. “It would be awesome to hang out with Charlotte.”

“Really? You’re sure it’s not a problem?”

“Not at all. I’m excited about it. Stop worrying so much, Nelly.”

“I know, I’m so anxious all the time,” she sighed in relief. “Charlie’s going to be so thrilled when she sees you.”

“So what’s the plan? Am I going to meet you and we’ll pick her up or are the pair of you going to come meet me… or Charlie and I could just have a day out without you?”

Penelope let out a short, unamused chuckle, “Actually I thought it’d be cute if you came with me to pick her up.”

“Cool, should I be on my way now then?”

“Well school doesn’t let out until three, so not necessari-“

“I’ll be on my way.”

She looked at the clock. “Harry, you have three hours. You’re not that far away.”

“Well, I would like to be alone with you for a little while,” he said suggestively. Penelope could practically see his smirk through the phone.

She smiled and began compulsively fixing her hair in the mirror, “If you put it like that, you should already be over here.”

“Okay, I’m on it!” She could hear Harry running around.

“I was only joking!”

She heard a door close. “Too late, I’ve already left.” Harry laughed. “No, I’m kidding. I haven’t been able to go to the shops, so I wanted to stop by on the way since we have this press thing tomorrow.”

“Oh, Harry, I’m sorry! We can meet you later if you wanted to shop around,” Penelope had a habit of feeling guilty for absolutely everything.

“Nell, love, it’s not a problem, alright,” He said entertained by her constant concern. “I’m not going off to do heart surgery. I’m shopping. If I have to leave before I’m finished, it’ll be okay.”

“Fine,” She finally stopped criticizing herself in the mirror and went to sit cross-legged on her couch. “But if you don’t finish, we can go while we’re out.”

He chuckled a bit, “Sure, Penelope.” The revving of his engine was audible through the phone. “I’m about to be on the road, but I’ll let you know when I’m on my way.”

“Okay, see you soon,” She said exuberantly through the phone.

“See you, babe.”

Penelope stood at the entrance to Charlotte’s school while Harry waited in the car. They came to the conclusion that it’d be best for him to stay in the car while the flood of young girls was in progress. At exactly 3:00 pm, children came storming out of the great wooden doors. After only a moment of waiting, Charlotte appeared. Her face was overwhelmingly delighted to see her aunt in the spot that her mother would normally be standing.

“Nelly!” Excited, the small girl picked up her pace to a run, wrapping her arms around her aunt’s waist when she got close enough. “Mummy didn’t tell me I’d be with you today!”

“We just sorted it out a while ago because your mummy and daddy will be working late.” She pushed back a piece of her niece’s hair that had fallen from behind their ears.

Charlotte huffed, “They always work late.” The pair began to walk toward the car.

“Oh, I know, but they wanted me to tell you they love you very much.” Penelope looked at her sympathetically and took her hand. The small girl let a small smile spread across her face. “Also, I have a present waiting for you in the car.”

“Really?” Her smile got considerably wider. “What is it?”

“You’ll have to see when we get to the car. I had to park up the street.”

“Well let’s go!” Charlie giggled, walking faster and tugging at her aunt’s arm.

In addition to buying Penelope a stuffed turtle, her favorite animal, Harry bought Charlotte a balloon in the shape of a crown with the word “Princess” written across it in pink. He now sat low down in the passenger seat with the balloon blocking his face as the two girls approached.

“It’s in the passenger side,” she told Charlotte. “Go ahead.”

Immediately, Charlie sprinted ahead the rest of the distance to the car. She beamed when he saw the balloon in the window. She pulled on the door handle and swung the door open. When she did, Harry yanked the balloon string down to reveal his face. Charlotte squealed and jumped back.

“Harry!” She shrieked. She stood there with her mouth open.

“Hi, Charlotte.” Harry smiled as he got out of the car and squatted down to her height. “How are you?”

“I’m great,” She replied so excited that she sounded nervous. “What’s going on?” Charlotte wasn’t ever made fully aware that her aunt and Harry were actually dating.

He laughed, “Nelly and I are going on a date and we want you to come with us.”

Her jaw dropped even further although it didn’t seem possible, “Seriously?” She looked at her aunt, giddy with excitement.

“Seriously.” Penelope grinned at how excited her niece was.

“Do you like this balloon? I got it special for you.” Harry held out the string to her.

“I love it,” Charlotte giggled. She took a hold of the balloon and soon after wrapped her small arms around his neck. “Thank you!” Harry’s smile could not have been wider as he returned the hug. The entire scene just warmed Penelope’s heart.
“You’ll make a beautiful princess,” he assured her, standing up to his full height.

“The most beautiful in all the land,” Penelope agreed. “Charlie, we should head to your house so you can change into play clothes because we’re gonna go to the park, first. You can practice your skateboarding.”

“Really?” She jumped up and down with her hands on the straps of her backpack. “Daddy says I’m getting better at it. He says I just have to learn to turn better.”

“Well, I guess we’ll have to work on that when we get there.” Penelope hugged her niece and opened the car door for her as Harry got back in on the passenger side.
