Perfectly Entwined

one!

Penelope Day ran around her house in a panic. She couldn’t believe that she had not heard her alarm go off. The one day when someone was counting on her to be somewhere on time, she slept in. Penelope grabbed a pair of yoga pants off the pile of laundry on her sofa and pulled a hoodie over her pink tank top. She brushed her teeth as she yanked her yoga pants up her legs with one hand and couldn’t help but thank God that she decided to take a shower the night before.

Last night, Penelope’s older brother, Anthony, called for a last minute favor. He had been promising his daughter, Charlotte, for months that he would take her to the upcoming One Direction meet and greet. He already bought tickets, however, last week he was called in to work in America. Anthony was supposed to be back yesterday, but the flight was delayed and he is now taking the red eye flight. He called Penelope from California, asking her to take Charlotte to the meet and greet because his wife couldn’t get out of work. He even said he’d pay Penelope since she would be missing work. She was completely fine with that because she loved spending time with her niece.

Just as she wondered if she had enough time to put on her makeup, a text came in from her sister in law, Mage.

“Are you almost here?” It read.

She sighed, putting her makeup bag back down and typing, “Woke up late. I’m getting in the car right now.”

Anthony told Penelope to pick Charlotte up at eight o’clock because his wife, Mage, had to work and it was now 7:57. They lived fifteen minutes apart. Penelope tore her phone off the chord, picked up her wallet, and snatched her car keys off the counter as she hustled out the door, locking it behind her. She pulled the hair tie out of her hair and internally celebrated the day that she decided to put an emergency makeup bag in her glove compartment. She started backing out of her parking spot as she flipped most of her hair over to one side.

“Oh, come on!” Penelope whined as she had to stop at a red light for the third time. Her left leg shook anxiously as she could see her brother’s house just down the road now. Once the light turned green, she sped down the road and into the drive way, put the car in park, and tugged the keys out of the ignition. She quickly grabbed her mini makeup bag out of her glove compartment.

Penelope walked right into the house. She knew the door would be open since Mage was expecting her. Nearly as soon as she took a step inside Charlotte crashed into her hugging her waist, the highest part of Penelope’s body that she could reach.

“Nelly!” She yelled, squeezing tightly. Charlotte couldn’t say Penelope as a baby, so her official nickname was Nelly.

“Hey, Charlie!” She shouted back, equally as excited as her niece. “You look precious!” Charlotte was wearing blue jeans along with an adorable turquoise, sleevless blouse. Her short brown hair was tucked behind her ears as always.

“Thank you!” She squealed spinning in a circle to show off her outfit.

Mage ran down the stairs. “Oh, Nell!” She smiled as she reached the bottom, hugging Penelope. “Okay, so you know what to do if there’s an emergency. I left directions to the meet and greet on the counter.”

“Directions.” Charlotte giggled letting go of Penelope’s legs.

Her mother laughed and rolled her eyes. “I wish I could talk, but I have to leave like right now.”
“Yeah, I’m really sorry.” Penelope said sheepishly.

“Oh, it’s no problem,” Mage kissed Penelope’s cheek and hugged her daughter. “Thanks for doing this on such short notice. The house key is on the table! I’ll be home at five and then we get to pick up daddy at seven, Lottie! I love you both! See you later!”

“Bye, mum!” Charlotte waved as Mage walked out the front door. “So, can we go now?” Charlotte laughed as soon as the door closed.

“Let me put on a little makeup and we can go as soon as I’m finished, okay?”

“You already look so pretty, Nelly!” Charlotte whined, grabbing her aunt’s leg again.

Penelope laughed, “Thank you sweetie, but—“

“Let’s go!” Charlotte shouted, tugging her aunt’s arm.

“Fine then! Let me get the directions first!” Penelope walked over to pick up the house key and directions to the venue. “You ready?”

“Yes! I’m so ready!” the small girl jumped with joy as they walked out the door.
