Overworked

Harry’s P.O.V
After about 10 minutes the rising and falling of Maddie’s chest told me she was asleep. I don’t think it was what we did earlier that got to her; I think it was more the fact that she’s been having nightmares. She can deny them all she likes, but I’ve heard her wake up in the middle of the night screaming or panting. When she goes to bed before me and doesn’t know I’m by her side, she’ll have nightmares. She had them for the whole 7 months that she ran away, Rob told me. She was calling him in the middle of the night because she had a nightmare. I wish I could have been the person that she called, but I’m the one that caused the nightmares.
“Right, what’s the real reason that she’s sleeping on your shoulder in the middle of a beach?” Gemma asked.
“She hasn’t been sleeping, she’s been having nightmares and not being able to go back to sleep after.” I said.
“About what?”
“People hurting her, she’s scared because the one person she thought wouldn’t hurt her did.” I sighed.
“Don’t put yourself down. She’s scared okay? How can she get over the fact that someone she loves hurt her this quick? You did it once, she cheated on you remember. She had an affair. And then she said that you don’t know what you’ve got. She was being an obnoxious bitch. Ashton probably would have done the exact same thing if I had done that. She’s scared but she’ll get over it, she’s strong, she’s overcome depression several times as well as anorexia and other disorders. She’s had a lot go wrong in her life, and now she’s getting back on track. This isn’t your fault Harry.” Gemma said. I nodded and looked down at Maddie. I kissed the top of her head and Gemma smiled. “It’s obvious you love each other too. So forget what’s gone wrong and remember what’s gone right. I have a surprise for you anyway.” She said and got her phone out. She texted someone and then put her phone away. After a few minutes I got impatient.
“Are you gonna tell me what it is?” I asked.
“You’ll find out.” She said.
“Awhh, aren’t you four cute?” I heard my mum’s voice. I turned around and sure enough she was there.
“Mum!” I shouted but quietly so I didn’t wake Maddie.
“Hi baby,” she sat down and kissed Gemma and I on the cheek.
“Ashton,” she smiled.
“And sleeping Maddie,” She laughed at my girl on my shoulder.
“She’s really tired.” I explained. Mum nodded and we sat and talked for a while.
“Get off me! Stop! You’re hurting me!” Maddie screamed out in her sleep.
“I told you,” I said to Gemma before shaking Maddie. She woke up and started crying into my shoulder. “You’re okay gorgeous. I’ve got you.” I hugged her tightly and she gripped onto me.
“Is Mum okay?” Brooklyn came over.
“She’s fine honey.” Mum told her.
“Nanny!” She hugged her. I smiled at them and kept trying to calm Maddie down. She just kept crying harder into my shoulder. I stood up and picked Maddie up.
“I’m gonna take her up to our room. Can you bring the kids up in about 10 minutes?” I turned to Mum and Gemma.
“Sure.” Gem said and I took Maddie inside. We got up to our room and I put her down on the bed.
“Baby, I’ve got you, you’re okay.” I kissed her forehead. She stopped crying after a few minutes and got into bed.
“Go back to the kids and your mum. I’m fine, honestly.” She said after a while.
“If you need me, call me okay?” I stood up from the bed. She nodded and buried herself in the covers. I opened the door and walked out going back downstairs. I hate seeing her like that but I know right now she needs to call her dad. Her dad is literally the only person who can calm her down when she’s in a state like that. I got back downstairs and sat down next to my mum.
“Is she okay?” Mum asked.
“Yeah, I think so anyway.” I replied.
“What was all that about?”
“She’s been having nightmares since I slapped her.” I frowned and Mum nodded.
“It’s normalHarry. She’ll be okay soon.” Gemma reminded me. I nodded and Freya and Amelia ran over.
“Where Mommy?” Freya questioned looking around.
“She’s gone to the room princess because she didn’t feel well.” I said. She nodded and they tried to pull me up. “What?” I laughed and stood up holding both of their hands.
“Come on Daddy! Come play.” Amelia jumped up and down.
“Okay.” I said and followed them to the sea. We walked in and it got to a part where they couldn’t stand up anymore. I picked them both up and walked further in with them.
“Dad! Look!” Brooklyn shouted after a few minutes. I looked at where she was pointing and Gemma was taking a picture. I smiled and then went over to the kids with the twins.
“Come on, let’s go and get you five ready for dinner.” I walked out of the sea and put Freya and Amelia down. They both pouted and I shook my head. “Not gonna work, we’ll come back another day.” I said and took both of their hands walking back to the towels. I picked up their pullover towels and put them on them. I dried them briefly and then gave the kids their towels. “I’m gonna get them ready for dinner.” I picked up mine and Maddie’s towels.
“Alright, see you in a bit.” Mum said and I took the kids upstairs. I unlocked the door and they all ran to the bathroom.
“Amelia and Freya first,” I said and opened the bathroom door. I ran them a bath and took their swimming costumes off and put them both into the bath. I washed them and their hair and got them out drying them off. They ran out of the bathroom naked and I just laughed at them. “Adam, your turn,” I told him and he went into the bathroom and had a shower. I looked around for the twins but couldn’t find them.
“I think you lost two little monsters.” Maddie laughed behind me and I turned to her holding hands with the twins.
“Did they wake you up?” I asked her taking them from her.
“I’ve been talking to my dad since you left.” She admitted and I nodded and took the twins to get dressed. After I had dressed them nicely I put them down on the floor and they ran out into the living room area. They have too much energy. Adam left the bathroom and Brooke basically ran in. I laughed at them and then looked at Maddie who gestured for me to go over to her. I did and she started talking. “I want you to know that the reason I’ve been having nightmares isn’t you slapping me.” She said.
“Your dad told you to say that yeah? I know it is Maddie.” I sighed.
“It isn’t, the reason I can only talk to my dad about all of this is because he’s the only one that understands. I’ve been through this before and it’s worse this time, I’ve been killed in basically every one. I just don’t want you blaming yourself. I love you so much. It’s not your fault. When I’m on my own for a long time it happens, it happened when-”
“Mum! Lis won’t let me finish!” Brooklyn screamed.
“You’re taking forever! I need to get my pretty dress on!” Lis screamed back.
“We’ll talk about this later.” Maddie sighed and went to sort out Lis and Brooklyn. I really want to know about this. I want to believe that I’m not the reason. I hope I’m not the reason. Maddie sorted out Brooklyn and Lis and I got ready to go out considering Maddie already was. We’ll just have to talk about her nightmares when we get back. I know she’s embarrassed about crying like that in front of Gemma, Ashton and my mum but she shouldn’t be. They’re family. When we were all ready we waited for Gemma to come and get us. About 10 minutes later there was a knock on the door. Maddie opened it and Gemma told her that they were ready. We all left and went down to the restaurant. “I’m sorry about earlier, it’s good to see you again.” Maddie hugged my mum.
“You don’t need to be ashamed Maddie. Everyone has nightmares. Harry used to have really bad ones.” Mum told her. Maddie turned to me and I nodded. I guess I just never told her about them because they weren’t important. I used to get them all the time before I met her. She stopped them. Louis was always waking me up from terrible nightmares. The tabloids thought we were up all night together but the real reason we were tired was because I woke us both up with my shouting. I hated being so vulnerable but I was then. We sat down and started looking at the menu. We ordered and were talking when my phone started ringing. I looked at it and it was Rob.
“I’ll be back in a second babe.” I got up from the table and answered my phone. “Hello?” I said.
“I hope you’ve been looking after my little girl.” He said.
“I have don’t worry. I love her and I’ll do anything for her.” I replied.
“Maybe 9 months ago I would have believed that, before you slapped her.” He reminded me.
“I regret that so much, come on, you let her come to Australia with me for a month. You’ve let her move back in with me. Surely you trust me again now?” I sighed.
“Harry, I trust you. But Maddie isn’t as strong as she says she is. She’sbeen through this before. It’s worse now. I want you to look after her, wake her up from any of these nightmares. Until she gets back, you’re the person responsible for her. You’re not the reason for these nightmares. She isolates herself and then they start. Just look after her okay. I don’t want her going back into depression again.” He said and I looked at Maddie laughing with the kids.
“I’ll look after her. I promise.” I said and he said goodbye and hung up. I went and sat back down and Maddie looked at me. “It was your dad.” I told her and she nodded. She went back to playing with the kids and I talked to Gemma and Ashton while we waited.
“Is everything okay between you two?” Gemma asked quietly.
“For god sake, everything’s fine!” Maddie shouted and stormed off.
“She’s tired, this happens.” I assured Gemma.
“I didn’t mean to upset her.” She said and Ashton hugged her.
“It’s not your fault.” He kissed her head.
“Mommyyy,” Freya whined.
“I’m going to go and talk to Maddie.” Mum stood up. I nodded and calmed Freya down.

Sorry if this has any mistakes, haven't proof read it as this is just a quick update. I won't be able to update again until Sunday and I wasn't going to update today but there are 2 reasons.

1) One Direction have been together for 4 years :D
2) School is finally finished for summer! Which means more updates for you guys because I can write more! I started writing University of London last summer so I have been writing Maddie and Harry's story for a year now which is crazy. It's gone so quick!
