Through The Dark

Ashton's POV

I absolutely had no idea what Soph meant by "falling".

Falling like falling off a cliff, or in love?
She was blushing when she said it, but also looked regretful.

Sophia kept mumbling on how heavy she must be.
Damn. That girl weighs less than a sack of potatoes!

It was my fault she hurt herself. The scrape was big enough to cause a drop of blood slide down her leg as if it were a tear on a cheek.

We approached the front of the house.
The grip she held on my neck tightened.

"It's alright." I reassured her.

I opened the door, slowly.

Niall, Harry, Luce, Eric and Michael turned simultaneously.

"What happened?" Luce gasped as everyone rushed closer.

"Set me down please." Sophia whispered. I hesitated, but released my hold and steadied her, one hand around her to support her.

"Sophia-" Harry began.

She looked down, but held her hand up to silence him.
"If you're going to apologize, don't."

Harry opened his mouth, then closed it.
"Cassia's dropping the restraining order."

She smiled. It wasn't a normal smile.
"Oh goody! Now I'll be able to see the baby I raised."
Her voice was tightly laced with sarcasm.

He sighed.
"Look. I'm going to apologize anyways. I was a real asshole. I used you."

Sophia gasped, her eyes tearing up.
"You u-used me?"

Harry looked down. His shoulders drooped.
"Yes."

Sophia slumped.
"So. You didn't like me, at all? The relationship behind the fake one was fake?"

Harry stayed silent.

I looked down at Sophia. She was defeated and pale.

"You were my bestfriend." She stated.

"You were mine too." He spoke softly.

Her arm gripped the fabric of my tee. She looked like she was going to collapse.

"I don't know if I can." She whispered. A tear drop made it's way down her cheek.

He looked up at her, his eyes full of regret.

"Let's getcha cleaned up." Luce piped up.

Sophia is shook her head. Her grip on me tightened.

"I'll do it." I said.

Everyone watched us make our way to the bathroom.

I hoisted her up on the counter.

"He means it." I said as I pulled out the first aid kit.

I handed her the cloth to clean up the scrape.

"I just wish he could be the Harry I first met." She whispered.

It sucked to be me. I was the friend stuck behind, ready to pick up the pieces, be the shoulder to cry on.

I said nothing as I wadded up the dirty cloth.

"Why aren't you saying anything?" Sophia whispered.

I smeared some ointment on the scrape. It wasn't bad. Just looked worse.

"Ashton?" She said.

"Gauze or adhesive bandage?" I asked.

She leaned over and took both bandages out of my hand.

"Tell me." She demanded.

I sighed. I turned to my side, leaning on the counter.

"I came to California to be with you. I watched all those chick flicks with you. I tucked you in. I made sure you never drank too much. I made sure you were comfortable. I held your hand through scary movies. I held your hair for you after you threw up at the amusement park. Why? Because I'm in love with you."

Sophia looked at me.

"And it sucks because I'm the one looking after you. Helping you up. Making you feel better. While he just broke your heart."

I took the bandage and wrapped it on her knee, never looking up. Her small hand covered mine, the other lifted my chin up to see her.

"Ashton Irwin. You're amazing. You can't beat yourself up over me. I'm sad and angry at Harry because I thought I loved him." She said, her eyes searching mine.

I scoffed and turned away.
"Right. So you love Niall."

"No." She said.

I turned to her.

"I think I'm deeply falling in love with you." Sophia said.
